It’s Women’s History Month! Throughout the month we’re celebrating queer women in history and media: today’s icon is Marsha P. Johnson.
Marsha was a well-known face in New York City’s Greenwich Village, where she lived on the street for many years. She is best remembered for her generosity and kindness, happily giving away her belongings, or spending her last two dollars on cookies to share around.
In 1970, along with fellow activist Sylvia Rivera, she founded STAR - the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries - which aimed to provide food, housing, legal aid, and other necessities to homeless trans youth.
