Mafalda at @portobayflores set me up with a private driver, Nuno, who came and whisked me away to #guimarães for the afternoon. What a treat to be driven, instead of fighting my gps and getting lost. He was extremely knowledgeable and taught me so much history about this very important town, which is considered to be the “birthplace of Portugal,” also known as #cidadeberço. It was the birthplace of #afonsohenriques (first king of Portugal) as well as the first capital city of Portugal in the 12th century. We visited the #castelodeguimaraes (#castle built in the 10th century to protect the area from the Moors). And the #palaceduquesdebraganca (#palace built in 1420). As well strolling through the #medieval town square aka #largodaoliveira. We caught a dramatic sunset from the castle and headed back to Porto. Perfect afternoon exploring #northernportugal.
