The Battle of Ourique: The Birth of Portugal’s Kingdom
On July 25, 1139, one of the most important battles in Portuguese history took place at Ourique. Prince Afonso Henriques led his forces against a much larger Almoravid army commanded by Ali ibn Yusuf’s supporters and achieved a decisive victory, strengthening his claim as the leader of an emerging Portugal.
Following the battle, Afonso Henriques was proclaimed King of Portugal by his followers, marking a crucial step toward Portuguese independence. Although the exact details of the battle are surrounded by legend, Ourique became a powerful symbol of national identity and the foundation myth of the Portuguese monarchy.
The victory helped transform a regional struggle for autonomy into the creation of a new European kingdom. Afonso Henriques would continue his campaigns against Muslim forces and secure recognition of Portugal as an independent realm.
