Yo Yankees, Africans Skype too.
Well some Americans can piss you off, I was at the Maker Faire event earlier, and we saw some pretty neat demo that impressed us. So we passed a joke about it and this African American lady goes like “Its not magic like in the VILLAGE, its all science.” We tried explaining ourselves but she told us that we seriously thought that it is magic and she would chase us from the table. I got mad but I kept it in.
Then when we were saying our good byes, another lady started telling us about how some lucky girl from The Gambia “a small country in west Africa ” got a chance to study in the USA and that they have been communicating with her through Skype and Google. She then explained what Skype is saying “We communicate with her through Skype and Google, we are able to see each other face to face.”
Now I don’t want to sound like am a sensitive person but I found what occurred offensive, cause their statements echoed what they think about us Africans in general. That we are dark and primitive, we know nothing about Science & Technology . To us a TV is filled with tiny people that act out things. Honestly speaking you can’t go to a University and start explaining what Skype is or say its not magic like in the village.
Yes you are coming from the most developed country in world but that doesn’t guarantee that you know everything about Africa just because the international media has fed you this narrative that Africa is full of nothing but poverty, war and famines all your life.
We may not be advanced as you , but we have access to the same technology you are using. We know what Skype is, we watch videos on YouTube , we Instagram, Blog, we do it for the vine , we code solutions to our problems like you do. So the next you come to me with your American accent and tell it’s not magic like in the village, may not be as understanding as I was today.
