BAL & Afreximbank Expand Partnership to Equip Young Professionals and Grow Africa’s Sports Ecosystem
The Basketball Africa League (BAL) and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) have deepened their cooperation to launch new initiatives aimed at empowering young basketball professionals and boosting creative industries across Africa. Announced during Intra-African Trade Fair 2025 in Algeria, the expanded collaboration builds on existing programs and marks a renewed commitment to developing leadership, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial skills among players, coaches, and early-career talent.
Strengthening What Already Works: BAL Advance & Next Play
BAL’s “Advance” program has long focused on helping players and coaches enhance financial literacy and leadership capacity. With the expanded partnership, a new branch—BAL Advance: Next Play—will be introduced in the league’s sixth season in 2026. This version adds business workshops and networking platforms designed to help BAL participants tap into their entrepreneurial side, think beyond the court, and contribute more broadly to Africa’s sports economy.
Giving New Voices a Platform: BAL Future Pros
One of the most exciting additions is BAL Future Pros, a year-round initiative to support early-career professionals working in sport. Through this program, young talent across Africa will gain hands-on experience in BAL departments, receive mentoring, and build connections within the industry—opening more than just athletic pathways but also administrative, creative, and operational ones. Applications are expected to open later in September via BAL and NBA career portals.
Supporting Creatives & Women in the Game
The expanded partnership isn’t only about what happens on the court. Afreximbank is helping the BAL extend its influence into creative sectors. Plans include supporting thought-leadership events like the BAL Innovation Summit and launching content series that celebrate the intersection of sports with fashion design and other creative arts.
In addition, a BAL4Her camp recently held in Algiers gave young U-23 female athletes from the community exposure, mentorship, and competitive training—another sign of investment into making women’s participation a priority.
