Hello. I’m a white girl and recently I saw a post somewhere on the internet talking about braids and cultural appropriation. And I’m just confused about something and was hoping someone could help explain it to me? So the first pic is a Dutch braid. And to my knowledge that’s not appropriation if a white person does it. The next picture is cornrows, and that’s definitely appropriation and white people shouldnt do that.
What I’m getting confused about is that there seems to be some sort of line between these two hairstyles that sometimes get crossed. And I’m just wondering what that line is?? Third picture is Kim K with braids that look simultaneously like Dutch braids and cornrows to me. I think this style upset people because of cultural appropriation. Can someone please explain to me why Kim K’s braids in this pic (I know she’s done straight up cornrows before which is yikes but I’m curious about these specific braids) are different from Dutch braids and why they’re appropriating?
Also if it clears it up I guess I’m just wondering about the “boxer braids” controversy because at first glance I just see Dutch braids but I can see that they also look like cornrows.
I’m genuinely confused and have just recently gotten into braiding my hair and I want to make sure I don’t cross any lines! Please help
