I was lucky enough to spend this Christmas in New York, and in between eating, drinking and general sightseeing spent my time traveling the length of Manhattan to visit as many of the pubic contemporary art galleries as possible. One of the most striking, and seriously underrated was The Studio Museum in Harlem, a contemporary art venue dedicated to promoting the works of artists of African descent.
The Bearden Project is an exhibition of work inspired by Romare Bearden, celebrating the centenary of his birth, and his position as the cornerstone artist in The Studio Museum Collection. Works by contemporary artists such as Glen Ligon, Nicole Miller, William Pope. L. L and Lorna Simpson, amongst others, fill the space, all made in response or homage to the influence of Bearden's work. Bearden's screen prints, painterly collages and geometric photomontages are startling, and completely new to me. Since returning I have discovered Bearden's work also featured in the exhibition Afro Modern at Tate Liverpool, which ran alongside the Chris Ofili exhibition at Tate Britain.
