In 2015, the Mexican government finally recognized its 1.38 million citizens of African descent in a national survey, signifying a tremendous victory for the Afro-Mexican community who had up to that moment largely gone unnoticed on the margins of Mexican society. Chacahua and El Azufre, small villages located on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, are populated mainly by Afro-Mexicans.

Afro-Mexicans: Dancing Their Way Back To Their Roots
Obatala is an Afro-Mexican dance troop that travels and performs throughout southern Mexico. The dancers learned the steps by watching YouTube videos. Through their performances, they express their pride in their African heritage and stay connected to their roots.

Even though it's a bit unpolished, Andy Amaya made a short doc that gives voice to those that rarely get a chance to speak up.
One was deported to Honduras and the other to Haiti because the police insisted that in Mexico there are no black people. Despite having Mexican ID, they were deported.
