#johnypitts @afropean, Notes from Black Europe • 2019 • (image: Paris metro by Johny Pitts) • • via @guardian: « The term “Afropean”, Johny Pitts writes at the beginning of this beguiling book, “encouraged me to think of myself as whole and unhyphenated ... Here was a space where blackness was taking part in shaping European identity at large. It suggested the possibility of living in and with more than one idea: Africa and Europe, or, by extension, the Global South and the West, without being mixed-this, half-that or black-other. Watch: StereoTypes Paris - French African vs. African American?
What I found most interesting about this video is that the black people he talks to seem to be the most oblivious or tentative, seemingly denying that there's any racism in France; and it's not until he talks to a few white people, about halfway through the piece, that we really start to get into the hard truths about the country's historically-based problems with regards to race, as most of them in the latter half of the video admit, very readily, that, yes, there most certainly is a problem in France.
