Born in Evergreen, Washington, Charlotte "Charlie" Chase had always felt like an outsider. Whether it was being excluded from her older brothers’ all-boys activities or not being accepted into a friend group in high school, she was always the odd one out. She wanted to put it all behind her when she started college, and it went well for the first 3 years. She’d made a few friends, managed her grades, and held down a job. That all changed when she came home for christmas. one drunken night of something she thought she wanted—then two lines crossed out all her progress. Charlie was pregnant. Although her second oldest brother, Adrian, was supportive, she slowly began to spiral, quitting her job and moving back home with no other plan. But it was when she heard the news of her problematic one night stand getting 30 years in prison for his extracurriculars that made her finally snap. Without a word, she took the first greyhound heading out of state and never looked back.

Charlie settled in Metropolis on the East coast, finished her degree online, and landed a small position as a receptionist at The Daily Planet. She loved her co-workers. She loved the city. And she was starting to love her life. Her baby arrived under harrowing circumstances months later, but it gave her an experience she could write about, and an in with the local heroes—who declared themselves the godparents. That first article took off, and she was given a desk in the bull pen to write more. It gave her an excuse to go back to the Hall of Justice and spend time with her new friends, bringing her son and some takeout on the weekends.

It was two years of success before a new hero emerged in the city. this one wasn’t a meta human like the others. he was an alien, sent to earth to save his life, and he quickly became all anyone in Metropolis could talk about. Charlie’s goal was to meet him, get to know him as the resident cape chaser, but their paths frustratingly couldn’t cross long enough. After noticing her co-worker Clark Kent managed to get a handful of interviews before she’d even met the new hero, she figured her best bet was getting to know him instead—and she was right.
