my salty hot take:
EVERY SINGLE SHIP ON RIVERDALE DOESN’T NEED TO EXIST.
A Leak in Ben’s Boat (it’s part two)
"Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck," Ben chanted as he tried in vain to scoop water out of his canoe with his fishing bucket. He had just wanted a day out of the lake to fish and relax. Now he was panicking as he realized all too late that there was a hole somewhere in the base of the canoe.
He alternated between chanting "fuck" over and over to instead chanting "shit" over and over.
Water was up to his knees when he instead resorted to
"Shit Fuck Shit Fuck Shit Fuck Shit Fuck,"
He pulled at his hair and yelled incoherently. He knew he was going to have to swim back to shore.
"Oh god Oh god Oh god" he chanted. He jumped out of the boat and tried to flip it to get some of the water out.
"Ben?" he heard Beverly yell from the porch of the lakehouse they had rented.
"HI BEVERLY!" he yelled back. He smiled at her as he was treading water and pulling the half-sunk canoe behind him.
"JESUS CHRIST, BEN ARE YOU OKAY?!" She yelled once she saw him.
"THERE'S A LEAK IN THE BOAT," Ben shouted. From this distance, he could just barely hear Beverly say in an extremely exasperated tone, "Oh my fucking god."
She ran back inside and grabbed some towels for him. Ben was nearly back to shore when Beverly got back. Ben drudged himself and the canoe out of the lake and sat down on the bank, not having been expecting the sudden exercise, he struggled to catch his breath. He wasn't the best swimmer and lugging a canoe half full of water hadn't helped. Beverly jogged over to him and wrapped a towel around his shoulder.
"Get inside before you freeze to death." She said. Ben laughed and shook his head, his cheeks were flushed from the exertion and from the embarrassment of having Beverly see him like this.
He took a moment to catch his breath before he got up to follow Beverly inside. Ben stripped naked as soon as he closed the front door behind him. His wet clothes were already frigid to the touch.
It was getting warmer out, but it still wasn't Spring yet, and up here it may have well had been frozen. By the time Ben got his underwear off, he was shaking like a leaf.
Beverly was quick to help him dry off and warm up.
"Don't you scare me like that," she said, pressing herself against Ben's bare chest and rubbing his arms.
"I'm sorry. I'm fine, everything's fine." Ben said, trying to reassure her, but Beverly still seemed panicked. She was jittery and kept looking around and biting her lip.
"Beverly?" Ben asked, "Are you alright?"
Beverly shook her head and muttered, "I need a cigarette." Before stepping outside.
Ben was confused and concerned but he was also freezing. He went into the bedroom and quickly got dressed in some of the warmest clothes he had brought on this trip. He caught a glimpse of himself in the bedroom mirror as he was putting on a sweatshirt. He squinted at his stomach and felt over the old scar. The big "H" that was carved into his abdomen seemed lighter now like it had faded somewhat. He looked over himself checking the other scars he knew he'd gotten back from his childhood in Derry. They seemed to have faded a bit too. Ben felt anxious yet hopeful. Maybe this meant it really was gone. They really did kill it.
Ben pulled on the sweatshirt and went to find Beverly. She was standing outside on the porch. A cigarette placed between her lips. She was on her phone typing with frantic speed, so distracted that she didn't notice that half her cigarette was now a stick of ash. Something was wrong.
"Bev?" Ben spoke softly, "What happened?" Beverly jumped, startled by his voice. The cigarette ash scattered down the front of her blouse. She smiled at him.
"Mike called." She said. Ben felt a chill run down his spine.
"What did he say? Is everything okay?"
Beverly set her phone down on the porch railing and wiped her eyes free of the tears starting to form. She was going to cry and was panicked, but she didn't seem scared or upset. Just on edge.
"You're not gonna believe it, " She said, "He said that someone was found in the barrens. Someone washed up out of the sewers hurt really bad, but still alive. They think-" She paused, choking back tears. "Ben they think it's Eddie."
"What?"
"I think he might still be alive," Beverly said.
"Is Mike there? Has he seen him?" Ben asked. Beverly shook her head.
"He's in Florida. He said someone from Derry called him. Someone we went to school with, I can't remember her name. "
"So he's not sure if it's really Eddie?"
"Mike said that he was pretty sure but not positive. He's getting on a flight tonight, We're the closest ones to him right now. Mike said they called him from a hospital in Bangor." Beverly explained.
Ben didn't question it, they were probably the only ones in Maine right now.
"That's only about a 3-hour drive," Ben said after pausing to think about it for a moment.
Beverly and Ben stood in silence for a moment. Both of them waiting for the other to speak. Ben was in disbelief at the thought. Could Eddie have even survived? Did they really leave him down there while he was alive?
Beverly waited for Ben to speak.
"Are we gonna go see if it's actually him?" Ben asked.
"Are we?" Beverly replied.
"I want to go, just to be sure. I don't think it'll be Eddie but I still want to check." Ben said.
Beverly nodded and extinguished her cigarette. She walked past him, back inside the lake house and started to pack up.
She didn't grab everything, just her toiletries and the suitcase that she hadn't yet unpacked since they had gotten there.
Ben stayed on the porch for a moment longer. Surely it wasn't Eddie. It must have been someone else. Surely they didn't leave him. Ben took a deep breath, smelling the crisp air. His boat was sliding back into the lake, already sinking again.
"I wasn't gonna catch any fish anyways," he muttered to himself and went inside to get his things.
Ben and Beverly loaded up into Ben's car and sped off. Neither one of them said it, but they were both hoping, praying that it was true. That Eddie was okay.
