MOVIES WATCHED IN 2022:
AFTERMATH 2021, dir. Peter Winther
Aftermath (2021)
⭐️⭐️ .5
If you want me to like a horror movie, make the dog-owners care about their dog. I am profusely apologising to my dog the second he yelps because he stepped on something.
You should watch this movie if:
you like the “there’s something in the basement” type of movie
you like seeing men gaslight their wives
Similar titles to watch:
Barbarian (2022) (woman thinks something is in the basement)
Another recommendation!
Aftermath (2021)- I’ll be honest with you, this movie is “The Boy but taking placing in the US”, and this guy is a major spoiler, but I know y’all are probably like me and mostly watch movies for hot villains.
Most of this movie is a “is this couple’s (that really don’t seem to like each other at all) house haunted by the ghosts of the previous owners?” So it’s kinda slow at first, but once Otto shows up, it gets fun! Plus the actor who plays him? 6’9”.
He’s an interesting character, not a good guy by any means, but he’s sympathetic, cute, and lonely.
If you like The Boy but think moving to the UK is too unrealistic for your fantasies, I definitely suggest you check this one out!
Warning: The movie does contain a VERY sad dog death and an attempted rape, so approach with caution.
this movie...... more than horror just showcases the most dysfunctional white couple ever like? ghost or no ghost, moving into a murder house or not they clearly have some issues that are not going to be fixed through couple’s therapy. they no longer trust each other, don’t consult each other, don’t really even wanna be together so? why are they wasting so much time and making each other’s lives hell when you can just not do that? I know it’s not easy to give up on a relationship let alone a full marriage but if you’ve taken the step to fuck your husband’s brother, and the husband kind of has a some weird underlying intention of spending more time with his female classmate THEN????? Is that really any less work than signing a few sheets of paper?
Not quite the usual Haunted House Movie.
It's alright to watch... but a bit predictable.
I watched the 2021 movie Aftermath today, and while I already knew most of what would happen I was pretty disappointed that it never acknowledged the cases that the movie was inspired by.
There will be spoilers for the movie in this, so beware if you don’t want the movie spoiled.
Anyways, the most I can find about the ‘based on true events’ part is a single article with a small mention of a case in 2011 where a couple was harassed and people attempted to scare them into selling their home using the same tactics as was shown in the movie.
There’s no mention at all of the 1922 murder of Fred Oesterriech, which I found the movie was heavily inspired by. Hell, they even gave the same name to the murderer, though the movie obviously goes in a little more sinister route than in real life.
Honestly the murder of Fred Oesterriech is fascinating, and it’s a shame that it isn’t highlighted more by this movie as the main premise is based on the case.
In both instances there is an affair, a house designed and built by the wife who intends to hide her secret lover in the walls and the attic of the house, things go missing and get moved, a secret door in a closet leads to Ottos hidden living space, someone sees Otto and gets convinced it was just a nightmare or ghost while describing him as a “rail thin pale man”, and eventually there is a murder of the husband.
In the real life case Otto Sanhuber shot Fred Oesterriech to save Walburga “Dolly” Oesterriech after hearing the married couples heated argument, then because he loved Dolly he stayed in the house’s walls and attic for 8 more years before he was found out by Dollys new lover and attorney Herman Shapiro.
Dolly had been taken in to custody after some new evidence was found that linked her closely to the murder of her husband, and during this time she expressed worry to her lover about her “vegabond half brother” that lived in her attic. Unfortunately (or fortunately) for her Otto Sanhuber confessed the truth of Dolly and his relationship to Herman Shapiro, as well as the fact he was the murderer.
That’s where the case ends thankfully, no torturing of a new couple and no more Otto hiding in walls. Instead Otto Sanhuber was convicted of manslaughter, but due to the statue of limitations he never spent time in jail. Instead he moved to Canada and changed his name to Walter Klein, where he eventually married and lived out the rest of his life in obscurity.
okay this is a huge spoiler for the movie aftermath, but BASICALLY after all this unexplainable seemingly paranormal shit is happening in a house that this couple buys they pull a “the boy” adjacent plot line where all these weird events was just the doings of a deranged feral man living behind their walls... so he comes out and poisons their food and fucks with the thermostat every night. he also killed the wife’s sister when she once came over alone and in one of the last scenes where all this is revealed the husband returns home and scours the house for his wife. except she’s been kept hostage by this man in the basement somewhere, and all the meanwhile the HUSBAND thinks his wife is just giving him a sexy surprise by being nowhere in sight... he sees someone lying in their bed and he’s cuddling up with it until he realizes that it’s the dead sister and it’s just?????? HOW DO YOU MISTAKE THAT FOR YOUR WIIIIFEEEE???? HOW?????? even if it was dark I would fucking KNOW like I don’t need that to happen to me to know that I can differentiate my wife between a mcliteral rotting corpse.... who does that... who??? he’s like getting all close up and personal with this dead body as if that shit don’t stink and feel cold and stiff like a dead fish like how could this have been written into a movie and released to the public
