I saw someone on here that posted about how they hate true crime shit and don’t interact with it unless forced and the reblogs are turned off, I imagine bc people are childish and there’s concerns about harassment. Idk. But I wanted to speak on it.
Here is (some) of my credentials to speak on my opinion on true crime, as someone who does have morbid interests and is studying to be Forensic Sci and with friends in psychology and victim advocacy and who has also been a victim of murder threats and was nearly killed:
It’s dangerously insensitive and inaccurate and honestly just a waste of internet usage and brain power.
It isn’t a good way or a safe way to “process” in a “safe environment” it’s actually very toxic for how much it sensationalizes and misinforms, not to mention the fact of tormenting still living families of victims for some of these cases. Some times its literally all just speculation and you just watched/read away 30-80 minutes of life to have someone tell you what you and every other person on the planet already knew about [insert famous suspect/killer here]. Often the information is skewed, incorrect, incoherent or just straight lies being parroted. Then theres the unnecessary gimmicks added in to “entertain” people, which for something so sensitive this shouldn’t be treated like entertainment.
Part of the reason I say its dangerous is because it is misinformation and sensationalized. And sometimes even calls to action??? Remember the whole: “if I ever get kidnapped” journals true crime ppl were making? Yeah that actually makes shit worse and adds too much or the wrong kind of data to an investigation. And thats just one problematic example.
Additionally ITS SO INSENSITIVE! Like no one cared about the victim when there was an active investigation or they were missing! But now that its sensational its all the rage. Like go watch a fucking horror movie and leave the real people alone.
So in conclusion I think its pointless at best and dangerous at worst and we should try to let it die in obscurity.
