It had been a warm spring day, everything had been perfect but Agatha just wanted to get away.
After getting scolded by her mother once again for trying to explain that her abilities were different then the ones of the other witches she had been screamed at and had received a slap to the face.
Turning out of the door the young witch didn't think where she was going, she just wanted to get away.
Finally stopping because she was out of breath Agatha took notice of her surrounding. She was at a small lake, secluded from the world around her, trees hiding it from curios eyes and the waterfalls drowning out every sound that came from the outside world.
It was beautiful, it was peaceful. It was perfect.
Reaching for the spell book she had stolen out of the forbidden library, Agatha sat down on one of the bigger stones and began to read, her feet hanging off the edge and dipping into the clear water of the beautiful lake.
She was so engrossed into her studies that she didn't notice the young woman stepping into the clearing and watching the witch curiously.
"Are you lost."
The voice ripped the young witch out of her thoughts and she was about to attack the witch hunters when she realised the voice belonged to a woman and not to the men trying to kill her and her people.
She looked up from her book and was taken a back from the beauty of the stranger. To anyone else she would have looked like anyone else but to Agatha this woman looked like she was sculpured from the gods personally, made out of stardust and the light of a thousand suns. She was perfect.
Realising that she hadn't said anything so far Agatha got up an walked closer to the unknown beauty.
"I'm Agatha. "
The woman smiled and it was like the whole world got brighter and more beautiful.
"Hello Agatha, it's very nice to meet you. Are you lost?", she repeated the question and Agatha realised she hadn't actually answered her.
"No", she said reluctantly, "more like trying to find some peace."
"Well that makes two of us.", she said as she sat down on the stone the witch was previously sitting, "you'd think life couldn't be worse but it seems like the gods just see this as a challenge."
"Gods?" Agatha asked confused.
She had never met someone besides her coven who believed in the existence of more than one god. Townspeople were very strict with their beliefs. Another reason why witches were hunted. But maybe her new companion was a witch as well.
Judging from her pale face and shaking hands that wasn't the case as she looked at Agatha with a scared expression.
"Please", she begged, "Please don't tell anyone, they would kill me."
"I won't." Agatha assured her as she took her hand and squeezed it encouragingly.
That earned her a beaming smile and a crushing hug.
The young witch was a bit overwhelmed for a second but when the other woman didn't pull away she wrapped her arms around her and closed her eyes.
This was the first hug she got in a long time. It was nice, Agatha though and buried her head into the strangers shoulder. She smelled like peaches. Fitting.
When they broke apart there was no akward tension but there was some else in the air.
Her mother would say love was for children but Agatha didn't believe that.
So they sat in silence, listening to the water and the chirping birds, still holding hands.
After a while Agatha realised she still had her book and pulled it out of the depths of her dress. Tapping her companion on the shoulder she was met with mesmerising eyes that made her heart beat faster and was mustered with a curious look.
It was dangerous. She could get scared and run away to tell the hunters but something deep inside Agatha told her that wouldn't be the case.
"Do you want me to read to you?"
Her question was answered when she felt her lay down next to the witch, head in Agatha’s lap as she closed her eyes.
Agatha opened her book and began reading. A foreign tongue not even most witches could master but to Agatha it came naturally.
So she continued reading, risking a glance to the woman in her lap but she was just enjoying the peace, not bothering to question the foreign language.
Tentatively Agatha brushed through her hair and when she wasn't met with rejection she continued reading, playing with her hair as she told stories long forgotten of places and things humans couldn't even begin to comprehend.
She was careful to leave out the pages with the spells but it seemed that didn't make a difference as she felt her magic sing to herself, pulsing through her body. Stronger than ever before.
Agatha held her breath, scared that she would be pushed into the lake every second, being accused of witchcraft and being a monster.
But nothing like that happened. Instead the sleeping woman cuddled closer to her. Seemingly not noticing the power that was pulsing through Agatha that moment.
Not wanting to wake her up the witch continued reading.
When she finished the book she realised that it had gotten quite dark and the temperature had dropped quite a bit. Gently waking her companion she looked down to see something that could only be described as a gift from the universe.
Sleepy eyes looked up at her and a drowsy smile was shot in her direction. When she sat up she realised that it was dark outside.
"I fell asleep, didn't I?"
Agatha just nodded. Only now she realised what position they were in, faces only centimetres apart, sharing the same air.
The witch waited for the other to pull away but she didn't. Instead she closed the distance and pressed a short kiss to her lips.
Agatha felt like her body was on fire. Her magic was pulsing under her skin, wanting to feel the thing that brought her so much joy.
She couldn't think properly, all she could manage was how beautiful the woman in front of her was and how she wanted this kiss to never end.
Breaking away for air the two women looked at each other. They both got up, still not moving further apart than necessary.
"I have to go."
Agatha felt a pinge of sadness in her chest.
"Will I see you again?", she asked hopefully.
"Perhaps." Was the answer she got as she received another kiss on the cheek as the other woman slowly walked away.
"Wait", Agatha said, waiting for her to turn around, "I don't even know your name."
"How about you call me mine?" Was the cheeky reply as she vanished between the trees.
Agatha just stood there, not knowing what to say. Tentatively she brought her hand to her lips. Did that really happen? She hoped so or else this was a cruel trick from the gods.
Looking to the place where her friend, lover, vanished she hoped to catch a glimpse of her again but there was only darkness.
As Agatha walked back to the coven she felt happier than ever before.
Maybe life wasn't so cruel after all.
