With Something I Might Be An Introvert, im calling it - at this particular moment, grime/uk hiphop is owning the north american variants. As new drake and kanye hit the waves, i feel like so much if not the majority of mainstream pop/hiphop is just contrived and out of touch. Fake beefs, manufactured controversies grasping for media coverage... Little Simz, on the other hand, sounds fresh, real, passionate, original. A sick, smooth flow paired with a poppy, catchy synthpop sensibility. Im reminded of early SZA, Kali Uchis, or Abra but with a sleek, Skepta-esque delivery. Her stuff glows with femme sexuality, among other things, but it doesnt pander to the male gaze. Likewise, her candid stories of fighting hwt way through a working class upbringing to make a living as a musician will likely resonate with anyone whos ever dreamt of being a professional artist, especially if you arent wealthy to begin with.
