The Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis each had a different set of instrument sounds they could play, and most games used those by using MIDIs for their songs. (I can explain what a MIDI is if I need to, but it'll make me feel old if it's not still well known...)

Ever hear a remix using only Sega Genesis instruments? Considering this video is right around 600 views... I'm willing to bet you haven't heard this one! XD

The Super Nintendo’s instruments were well suited for orchestral songs, while the Sega Genesis’s instruments were better used for rock and roll or grunge type of music.
