Both Maria and Y/N had been together for the better part of the year, although Maria was being sent on more missions with Phil, Y/N was sent on every mission with Natasha. The friendship between the assassin and the agent had always been on the forefront of Maria’s mind.
“You like her.” She stated as Y/N packed for another mission, this time it was a solo mission.
“She is just a friend, Maria!” Y/N yelled as Maria scoffed. “You are everything I want and more!!” They sighed before cupping her face. “Let’s take this month, we’ll talk as much as we can and then when I’m home, we can see where we are, see if we are on the same page.”
“I’m sorry.” Maria cried as Y/N gave her a gentle smile, wiping away her tears.
“It’s ok.” They told her. “I have faith in us.” They pressed a tender kiss to her lips before their foreheads pressed together. “I love you Agent Hill.”
“I love you Agent Y/L/N.” She replied before Y/N went back to packing. She watched as they packed everything they needed, walking them to the car they were assigned. “Call if you need back up.” She told them firmly as they opened the car door.
“It’s a simple recon mission.” They reminded her.
“It’s never just a simple recon mission.” She reminded them before taking a deep breath. “I don’t know if I would survive if I lost you.” She whispered as they kissed her forehead.
“You won’t lose me.” They spoke with certainty. “In one month, on New Year's Eve, I will be back and ready to kiss you at midnight.” They kissed her lips once more before they disappeared, heading towards their destination.
As the month started, they had kept true to their word, calling Maria everyday, whenever they could, without fear of being caught. Then as the final week approached, they hadn’t spoken to each other. Maria wanted to call them but she knew she could jeopardize their mission.
“They will be fine.” Nat spoke as the party started, Maria’s eyes remained on the door, hoping to see the familiar face walk through.
“We haven’t heard off of them in over a week!” She yelled as Nat pulled her away from all of the other guests. “I’m worried about them.” She covered her face with her hands. “This isn’t what I wanted to happen, this is what I was worried about. Being attached and.”
“Falling in love.” Nat finished as Maria nodded. “I grew up thinking that love is for children and that I truly have no place in the world, but being here, being accepted into this group, a group I call my family has shown me that love can be the most beautiful thing in the world.” She walked her to the door, overlooking everyone laughing and having fun. “When I look at all of these people here, I feel at peace. I am home, and I have found my place in the world.”
At that moment, Y/N walked through the door, slightly battered and worse for wear, but their eyes looked for the blue irises they longed to see, to seek comfort. A smile on their face as they saw Maria stood with Nat, both in a deep conversation, approaching the two to see Maria with tears in her eyes.
“What’s with the tears?” They asked as both women looked at them.
“You’re here.” Maria whispered as they nodded with a smile.
“I made a promise didn’t I?” They questioned as Maria nodded, a smile growing on her face as Nat turned to walk away.
“I will leave you both.” She told them. “It’s good to have you home Y/N.” With that she disappeared as Maria moved to cup their face, assessing the injuries she could see.
“We should get your wounds treated.” She told them as they shook their head no.
“We have a few minutes until midnight.” They reminded her. “These injuries will still be here in January.” She smiled as they pulled her close, listening as everyone started to countdown the seconds. As everyone cheered and yelled New Year, Y/N pressed their lips against Maria’s, holding her closer than before.
“I guess we made it through December.” They smirked as Maria kissed them once more before dragging them off to tend to their wounds, listening as the sound of the others celebrating faded into the distance.

You hummed to yourself as you carried on pottering around in the kitchen, your hips swaying slowly to the rhythm of the song that played on the radio, making sure not to be too loud as the red digits on the clock flashed to show 6:45 am. It was early, but you couldn’t help but feel like you were in the best mood you’d ever been in your entire life. You were happy.
Amelia had school at 8 which meant you had to leave at roughly 7:30 am to make sure she got there on time, giving you more than enough time to give her a bath, let her wake up properly, have her breakfast and then you drive her to school. You were going to make it your mission to get through this morning, on your own, and let Maria have a break.
You made your way upstairs to Amelia’s room, knelt beside her bed, and gently stroked her chubby cheek with your index finger to gently awaken her from her slumber. “Bubba, wake up sweetheart, need to get you ready for school.”
“Don’t wanna.” You heard a quiet voice mumble and you laughed gently, pressing a kiss to her hairline. “If you wake up, I’ll make you some pancakes after your bath, how does that sound?”
“Can I have chocolate chips in mine?” She questioned sleepily, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes with her little fists and you couldn’t help but stick your bottom lip out, in awe of her cuteness.
“Of course princess, now come on, let me get you ready for school,” you whispered softly, pressing yet another kiss to her hairline, and she wrapped her arms tightly around your neck for you to take her to her bath.
“Okay mama, I love you” she mumbled tiredly against your shoulder, your shirt wrapped tightly in her fists as she continued to fight off sleep. You inhaled sharply at her words, tears stinging in your eyes as they threatened to fall, and you smiled wide, placing her down in the bath. “I love you too, little one, so so much.”
Even if she wasn’t your own, you loved her.
Once you had given her a bath, you both made your way downstairs and you started to make breakfast for the three of you, knowing Maria would wake up naturally any minute now. You zoned out as you cradled your cup of coffee in your hands but slowly started to zone back in when you felt persistent poking on your cheek.
—
You grunted slightly when you felt the poking get firmer on your face and you scrunched your nose up turning in bed to try and get comfortable again, after being awoken from your slumber, and subconsciously pulled Maria closer to you.
You hummed in appreciation when you felt Maria tuck her head into your neck, but once you had thought the poking had stopped, it started again making you grunt once more.
“Maria, stop poking me. I’m not ready to get up yet.”
“It’s not me,” Maria mumbled against your neck, eyes still closed, as she tried to cherish that last bit of sleep, “My hands are here.”
You yawned slightly and finally felt where Maria’s hands were, one was tucked in between hers and your chest, the other was draped over your waist, so that meant only one thing. You had a little visitor.
“I think there’s a certain little someone who has come in to find her mom,” you muttered quietly as you did your best to stifle another yawn. Maria just nodded against you, tightening her grip on you to stay curled into you, refusing to give up her position just yet. Once you opened your eyes, you smiled when you were met with bright blue ones staring back at you.
“Hi little one, good morning.”
“Bubbles!” Amelia squealed jumping on top of you to hug you tight, inevitably standing on Maria in the process making her let out a pained groan. You couldn’t help but chuckle slightly, which made Maria pout but you just shook your head, and pressed a gentle kiss to her lips.
Maria smiled against your lips and moved her hand from your waist to gently cup your cheek before she pulled away. “I can get used to that in a morning.”
“Me too,” you smiled as Amelia hugged you tighter, nuzzling her head into your neck and then huffed. You glanced down at the little girl in your arms, and hummed in acknowledgement, a small smile on your lips. “Is someone jealous they’ve not had any morning kisses?”
Amelia’s pout deepened whilst her eyes narrowed, but you just smiled more at the cuteness of her trying to seem unbothered by your words and teasing. Maria moved slightly so there was space between the two of you and Amelia immediately shuffled in between you both.
“No, I don’t need kisses, I’m a big girl.”
“Oh really? Since you’re too big for mommy’s kisses I guess I’ll just give them all to bubbles,” Maria teased as she pressed her lips to yours once more and you immediately reciprocated the action whilst Amelia whined loudly sitting up.
“I changed my mind; I do want my kisses!”
You smiled down at her before you and Maria peppered her face in kisses, and she laughed loudly once you both started to tickle her as well. Maria carried on tickling her as you climbed out of bed to stretch, and Amelia squealed, kicking her legs trying to get away.
“Bubbles! Save me!”
You were quick to scoop Amelia into your arms to lift her away from Maria’s wrath, which caused Maria to pout, and you smiled pressing a kiss to the smaller girl’s cheek. “I’ll always save you sweetheart, especially from your mommy’s tickle monster.”
Maria smiled at the sight of both of you, she knew that the skin-to-skin contact Amelia had with you, due to you still only being in sleep shorts and your sports bra, would comfort her even more. You smiled back at Maria gently swaying side to side whilst Amelia babbled nonsense and you always made sure to respond with just as much enthusiasm.
The sound of the bedroom door opening grabbed everybody’s attention, and you froze on the spot, you had forgotten that Natasha had no idea you had stayed the night. The redhead’s eyes darted between you with Amelia, to Maria in bed, and then to the floor where there was no evidence of you sleeping on it.
“I didn’t hear you come back,” Natasha stated coolly, glancing at Maria, and you could tell she was looking for any kinds of markings that could show that something might have happened between the two of you. “Did you both have a nice night?”
“Yeah, we were really quiet when we came in, and we just went straight to bed considering how late it was. Y/N mentioned about getting McDonald’s breakfast if you’d like to order it with us, Natty.”
“It’s my treat,” you smiled, letting out a small laugh when Amelia started wriggling in excitement. “Donald’s pancakes Auntie Natty!” Natasha’s gaze fixed on her niece, and then she glanced at you, nodding slowly, whilst she let a small smile form on her face. “That would be really nice, thank you Y/N.”
“It’s not a problem. Also, we had a lovely night last night, thank you for asking,” You smiled, relaxing when she sent you a smile back, before you turned your attention back to Amelia. You raised an eyebrow when she moved her hand to your cheek and turned your head to face her, a small pout on her face and she started to whine. “Can I have my pancakes now?”
“Yeah sweetheart, I’ll order it in a second,” you reassured and Amelia nodded, wriggling in your grip once more, so you placed her down on the bed next to Maria. Placing a chaste kiss on Maria's cheek, you grabbed your phone to unlock it and passed it to her, “Are you okay ordering for everybody whilst I go shower?”
“Oh, uh yeah. Yeah I can do that, you said you wanted pancakes?”
You nodded and gave Natasha a grateful smile when she passed you a towel from out of Maria’s wardrobe, before you then made your way to the shower. As soon as you had left the room, Natasha turned her head to Maria with a knowing smirk on her face. “You’re obsessed with her, now tell me everything about your date, you’re practically glowing.”
Maria stayed silent and looked at your phone which was in the palm of her hand, unlocked, and you weren’t in the room. This was new territory for Maria, she never had this kind of openness and trust with anybody before, all of her exes were secretive and closed off, her ex-husband wouldn’t even let her glance at his phone, nevermind have it open and not be around.
“Maria? Are you okay?”
Her bottom lip trembled and she sucked in a harsh breath quickly wiping her eyes as Natasha placed herself on the spot next to Maria and cuddled into her side. “Yeah, I’m fine, I just…I’ve never had someone who’s been this open with me before. She has given me her unlocked phone, with no hesitation.”
“This is what a healthy relationship is like, Maria, she has nothing to hide, and she doesn’t care what you see on her phone,” Natasha explained as she pressed a kiss to her friend's temple, whilst she ordered the food, Amelia playing with her bunny in front of them.
“I really like her, Nat. Last night was amazing, we talked, we had some of the best bar food I’ve ever tasted, and we danced for so long. I felt like I was in high school all over again, the butterflies I had were making me feel like I wanted to throw up. I never wanted the night to end,” Maria recounted dreamily.
“I love that you’re so happy, I honestly couldn’t imagine you having fun with her because she just seems so uptight all the time,” Natasha shrugged, staying cuddled into Maria’s side. “But, you sound like you had a really nice time, and it also sounds like she has made up for being a bitch so many times. So I guess I’ll start being nicer, for you though, not for her. She isn’t off the hook just yet.”
Maria rolled her eyes playfully at Nat’s protectiveness, but smiled nonetheless, she knew that Natasha had her best interest at heart, and it would take some time to prove that you weren’t going to hurt her.
By the time you came back to the room the food had been ordered, Amelia was sitting at Maria’s desk colouring, and Maria was wrapped up in Natasha’s arms. Your body was still damp from the shower and you sent a smile to the two women. Maria immediately went to move from Natasha’s hold but you raised a hand, shook your head, and had a gentle smile on your face as you continued to towel dry your hair.
“You don’t need to move on my account, I stole you for a majority of last night, it’s fine to want to spend time with your friend,” you smiled as you finished towel drying your hair, before throwing it into a messy bun, now dressed in your dress pants from last night but without a shirt.
Natasha’s mouth fell agape at the sight of you, and the fact you were unphased by their cuddling, before she turned to give Maria, who was practically drooling over you, a sly and mischievous smile. Maria swallowed thickly as she watched droplets of water slowly make their way down your torso, past your bralette, and towards the waistband of your pants.
“Maria, are you okay?” You questioned with a small tilt of your head, sending her a confused, but soft, smile.
It wasn’t until Nat pinched the back of her arm, rather harshly, that she came out of her daze and nodded at you. “Yeah, I’m fine, sorry. Here’s your phone back, I was only on the food app, so don’t worry.”
“I wouldn’t have cared either way, love. It’s okay,” you smiled, taking your phone from Maria to place it in your pocket. It was now your turn to be awkward and you cleared your throat slightly, “Maria, do you have a shirt or something I could borrow? I didn’t really expect to be staying over, so I have no clothes.”
“Oh! Of course, I’m sorry,” Maria rambled as she moved out of Natasha’s arms to grab you a plain white t-shirt that you tucked into your pants, smiling at your outfit being now semi-casual because of wearing a t-shirt rather than your shirt.
Maria couldn’t help but smile at the sight of you in her clothes, but the sound of the doorbell brought her back to earth, and she started to get up before you stopped her with a smile. “I’ll go get it, don’t worry and we can have breakfast in bed?”
“Breakfast in bed!” Amelia shouted as she bounced across the bed and up into your arms. Both Natasha and Maria lunged forward to stop her from falling but you caught her easily and placed her comfortably on your hip. “I go with bubbles to get breakfast!”
“Come on then, trouble,” you teased, gently tickling her sides and Maria sat watching the two of you in awe, letting out a gentle sigh when you left the room and Natasha was quick to break the silence.
“Okay, so she’s really hot AND good with Amelia…you need to lock that shit down,” Natasha insisted, to which Maria just rolled her eyes with a small smile on her face, and then Natasha gasped. “You’ve already thought about it, haven’t you?!”
“Shhh! Nat, what the fuck?! She could hear you!”
“I’m just saying.”
“Yeah, well don’t ‘just say’ anything. The last thing I want to do is scare her away.”
“Well, I am just saying, she is quite a catch Maria. You know she is, so don’t even try and deny it.”
“What are we just saying?” You questioned as you walked back into the bedroom, Amelia clinging onto you as you held the bags of food in your free hand. You frowned softly when you watched the colour drain from Maria’s face and Natasha cleared her throat.
“I was just saying that mcdonald’s pancakes are better than starbucks pancakes,” Natasha trailed off, the statement she made sounding more like a question but you just gave her the benefit of the doubt and agreed.
Did Starbucks even sell pancakes?
You nodded slowly and sent her a small smile as you sat yourself at her desk and Amelia sat on your lap as the two of you enjoyed your breakfast. Natasha gave Maria another knowing look, but Maria just sent back a small glare.
Maria knew she was falling for you, and she was falling hard.
**
The rest of the morning moved quickly, Amelia had refused to let you out of her sight and she was over the moon at the idea of you starting to finally come over to have sleepovers with her and her mommy. Surprisingly, Natasha had made a lot of effort to try and keep you in conversation, you knew she was trying to suss you out but that didn’t matter, and you were more than happy to answer any of her questions.
You frowned when your phone let off another alert, the fifth one in at least 15 minutes, and glanced at the security app on your phone, thinking it would just be Thor messing around in your front room. When you saw Thor curled up, and asleep, in your room you began to panic about why your security system had been activated, so you scrolled through the various camera feeds in your home, not realising you had completely zoned out from Maria.
Maria slowly began to stop talking but didn’t interrupt you from your phone, she knew better than to do that with people. She knew what would usually happen if she did do that, and it wasn’t pretty, it was something that Maria had learnt the hard way. Your jaw tensed as you monitored the feed from your front room and saw someone, who you had hoped to never have to see again, go through your belongings and sit down on your couch.
The two women jumped when you suddenly threw yourself from the sofa and started to dress yourself with your blazer and shoes. Maria sent a confused glance to Natasha, who just shrugged in response, before she stood herself and gently grabbed your arm.
“Y/N?”
Out of reflex, you swiftly pulled your arm away and quickly turned to face Maria, who had flinched away from your abrupt movement, before you took a deep breath to calm yourself down. “Maria, I’m sorry, something has come up and I really need to go. I wish I didn’t have to go, but I need to sort this problem out. I don’t mean to essentially eat and run,” you sincerely apologised.
It wasn’t hard to tell there was something that you weren’t explaining, Maria wasn’t stupid, and your body language was extremely tense…even for you. Your shoulders were squared as though you were ready to physically attack someone, or be attacked yourself and your hands were shaking as though you had pumped an unhealthy amount of adrenaline straight into your bloodstream.
Natasha squinted at you as you gathered the last bits of your belongings before you moved towards Amelia and bent down to press a gentle kiss on the top of her head. “Be good for your mom and your auntie Natasha, kiddo. Don’t forget Santa is still watching.”
Amelia quickly nodded in agreement whilst you made your way to Maria, pulling her into you for you to be able to press a kiss on her cheek. Maria immediately tensed in your arms at the sudden affection, but then slowly let herself relax.
“I’ll see you later the-”
“Yeah, I’ll call you, promise,” You interrupted, to which Maria frowned and crossed her arms as she tried to hide within herself, watching you awkwardly as she internally begged herself not to get upset by your change of demeanour. “It was so lovely to see you, thank you for letting me stay. Right…bye Natasha, bye Maria, see you later kiddo!”
Before anyone could even blink, you were out of the house and sprinting towards your car. The heavy feeling in Maria’s chest started to grow, it felt as though she was being suffocated. Had she done something wrong? Said something wrong? Maybe even not done something she should have?
“That was weird, but she’ll come around. Now, let’s just have a wind down day, yeah?”
Maria turned to Natasha’s voice and nodded, maybe a wind down day was exactly what she needed. She just hoped that you would be okay and you’d come back around.
**
It didn’t take you long to get home, at least not considering the fact you must have ran at least 4 red lights and broken at least 3 different speed limits. Why was she in your house? You hadn’t seen her in just under 2 years, she had no reason to just randomly come back into your life.
You dropped your bag on the floor and made your way into your living room, not even giving your visitor a time to speak before you growled at them. “Get the fuck out of my house. How did you even get in here? In fact, no, I don’t even want to know. Just get out before I call the cops.”
“Now now, that’s not any way to speak to your wife now, is it?”
“Ex-wife,” you deadpanned, a vicious glare on your features, as you did your best not to lose your temper and allow yourself to run off the rails. “You’re very much my ex-wife, Carol. Now, I won’t tell you again, get the hell out of my house.”
“I just came to ask about how your date with that little whore went.”
You growled darkly, taking a step towards the blonde, who did what she did best and looked down on you whilst she towered over you. Except, the difference this time was that you had no reason to not defend yourself anymore, you weren’t going to back down easily, especially not after insulting Maria.
“Don’t you fucking dare speak about her like that, Carol. I will only warn you once,” you threatened, reaching for your phone to call the police before Carol hit the device out of your hand, and both of you watched it smash onto the floor. “I’m not yours to control and bully anymore, the divorce was finalised nearly 2 years ago, now just get the fuck out, please.”
You internally winced when you heard your voice crack, yet Carol just hummed in acknowledgment and a sinister smile spread across her lips as she leant down to grab her bag. “It seems as though I’ve overstayed my welcome, but don’t forget Y/N, you’ll always be mine. You know you will, because you know that you’re nothing without me.”
“That’s not true, Maria said that-”
“Maria. So, that’s her name? That’s adorable,” Carol noted and the teasing in her voice became increasingly obvious and you tensed your jaw tightly as you internally cursed your own fuck up. “Well, you better let Maria know to back away from what isn’t hers, and you need to be more aware of your surroundings when you’re out. Anybody could be watching.”
You flinched slightly as Carol placed a kiss on your cheek before she left your house, and there was nothing that could stop the sobs that suddenly took control over your body and sent you down onto your knees.
The sound of your door opening once more set off your fight or flight response, so you grabbed the closest thing to you, which happened to be your already broken phone, and threw it aggressively in the direction of your front door.
“Y/N?”
The soothing sound of the visitor’s voice made you lift your head and you quickly turned to see your best friend standing beside the door, a concerned look carved into his handsome features, and his arms already open to welcome you into them.
“Buck,” you whimpered pathetically, ignoring your body’s desire to stay on the floor, and then moved from your knees to run towards the tall brunette, letting him engulf you in a tight hug whilst he allowed you to sob into his shoulder. “Sh-She, um-FUCK”
“Shhh, it’s okay. Don’t tell me about that just yet, let's just get you calmed down, ay? Come on, I’ll make you some tea and a sandwich or something,” He stated, his concerned look being replaced with a gentle smile when he sat you down on your couch.
Bucky did as he told you and made his way to the kitchen to make you a tea, and something to eat, before he came back to sit with you. Luckily, by the time he had returned, your sobs had turned into sniffles and you were actually able to provide coherent sentences to explain what had happened.
Your best friend listened intently, not realising he’d stolen half of your sandwich, engulfing half of it straight into his mouth, to ensure he’d stay quiet long enough for you to explain about last night, and how you found Carol in your house this morning. It hadn’t taken long for Thor to wake up from his slumber and make his way downstairs, immediately curling up into your side in an attempt to give you comfort, and steal the other part of your sandwich.
“So, how did she get in?”
“I don’t even know, Buck. I’m pretty sure it at least makes me feel a little better that I didn’t have to hear about how she had broken into my home. Especially since I changed the locks, and security system, as soon as I had kicked her out and filed for the divorce.”
Bucky frowned at your words and analysed you as you searched for new home security systems, and locksmiths, to ensure that you could feel safe in your own home once more. The whole situation had come at the worst time, it was only a few weeks before Christmas, you and Maria had only just started to branch out into exploring a relationship together and then you knew you had a lot of important company matters scheduled into your diary for the next couple of weeks.
“So, this Maria chick? I want to hear more about her,” Bucky smiled, breaking the solemn silence that had started to cloud over you. You rolled your eyes at him, because of course he wants the gossip about the person who you’re seeing, he’s nosey like that. “From what you told me about the date, she seems lovely.”
“She is, Buck, she’s amazing. The only thing I’d class as a concern is the fact that her housemate fucking hates me. She looks at me as though she wants to punch me, kind of hates me. I can see it in her eyes, but it didn’t seem as severe this morning. On another note though…she’s definitely your type.”
“Y/N,” Bucky warned, his eyes narrowed in a playful fashion. The only reply you gave him was a small scoff, he was all for relationship and dating talk until it was turned back on him. He had been single for nearly 4 years and had never let you set him up with anybody, no matter how much you begged. “Also, I hate to bring this back up, but what are you going to do about Carol? Will you tell Maria? Because, from what you told me, this is very much going to affect Maria as well as you.”
“No, I’m not going to say anything, at least not yet. The less Maria knows the better. Carol isn’t stupid enough to go straight after Maria, especially not after making it aware that she’s decided to try and wedge herself back into my own life. Maria doesn’t need to know, but I’m going to give it a few days at least, and I’m going to stay away from the office for those few days.”
“Y/N, you need to tell her.”
“No, it’s better this way. Maria doesn’t need to know.”

Guidelines ❊ Masterlist ❊ More Maria
Agent Hill’s hand covers your mouth, pushing you around the corner before you realise what’s happening.
The nook is a tight fit for you, and even tighter when she wedges herself in too. And she really pushes right up against you. Your body flushes with a sudden heat that you try to ignore.
Staring at you with eyes wide, she puts a finger to her lips, and slowly lowers her hand from yours.
You nod in understanding.
Someone is coming - a group of people, you gather, by the sounds of multiple heavy footsteps echoing down the hall.
Keeping silent is like second nature to you. Your body naturally tenses as they get closer, ready to spring into action if you need to.
Their conversation gets clearer as they near your location. While you can make some of it out, the comms in your ears will do a much better job of recording it all, and it’s a good thing you don’t have to listen, because you find yourself distracted by something else.
Maria. Her body is lithe and soft in all the right places. You’ve noticed before, but now you can feel every inch of her pressed up against you. The curve and weight of her breasts are especially hard to ignore. Every breath briefly expands her chest against yours, and vice versa.
You shift just slightly, hoping to relieve some of the heat between your legs.
Her thigh becomes wedged between, pressing firmly against you.
You can’t react, can’t do anything about it without making a sound, and a sort of guilty pleasure races through you at the thought. Swallowing, you hesitantly meet her eyes.
She is glancing out of the little nook, before flicking her attractive gaze back to you. You have always liked that sharp look she gets when she’s focused.
This is not your first mission together - the two of you have worked well together for a while now, teaming up against whatever new threat S.H.I.E.L.D. is facing. Espionage is your specialty, something you’ve formed a bond over.
Then she shifts, accidentally pressing her thigh even further up against your clothed wetness.
Getting wet is something that often happens when you’re on a mission. The adrenaline, the thrill, makes you horny, and downtime after a mission usually consists of you, a bed, and your vibrator.
Now is not the time to be thinking about that. Maria’s thigh is pressing pleasantly against your pussy, pushing into that bundle of nerves between your legs in just the right way to send a bolt of pleasure through your body.
A silent gasp escapes your lips.
She’s close enough to notice. Her gaze strays down, exploring your face while her soft breath mingles with yours.
You don’t expect it when she leans in, closing the distance between you until her nose brushes your skin. But it’s intriguing, seeing her this close, feeling her the way you have always wondered about, and you can’t stop yourself from responding.
Her lips look so soft, so biteable, but you don’t kiss her. You are on a mission, and neither of you would ever be so reckless.
Still, this is more than just two friends hiding together. There is an undeniable tension running between you, an intimacy you are choosing to share.
You tense your hips just slightly, rubbing your pussy over her thigh.
It feels so good that your blank expression drops, and Maria can see the pleasure on your face.
Her mouth twitches, her brows knit, and she looks down to where her thigh disappears between your legs.
You flex again, holding back a groan.
She looks back up at you instantly, eyes filled with heat. Her head tilts, eyes narrowing, and she closes one hand around your waist, the heat of her touch seeping through your clothing and into your skin.
It’s a silent, erotic, stolen moment.
With her hand on you, she controls your hips and her thigh, moving in tandem to make you ride her thigh.
It feels so good, sending you higher and higher into bliss. You didn’t even know you could come like this, but it feels so good you can’t stop yourself.
Your breathing gets frantic, still silent, but you know she can feel the air moving between you. She is so close to you it hurts, neither of you touching, but each equally aware of the other, exchanging longing looks and heated breaths.
With each movement up and down her thigh, your bodies crush against each other more and more, the press of her curves a dizzying, heady sensation. You hate the fabric separating you from each other. You want - need - to be closer.
And then the thought of being with her, naked and entangled in each other, sends you over the edge.
You keep your eyes on her, letting her know exactly what she’s doing to you while her nails dig into your side. She can only watch in amazed satisfaction as you come over her thigh, your body tensing and shifting and doing your best to work through your pleasure without making a sound.
You just came on a mission. Fuck.
The sounds in the hallway have long faded by the time you finish, and there is no time to do or say anything.
In some sort of unspoken agreement, you nod at each other before peeling away from the nook and continuing on to your target like nothing happened.
You complete the mission with weak knees and soaked panties.
It feels like the briefing takes longer than normal. Neither of you mention anything about what happened in that nook.
Maria is silent as the two of you depart for your hotel rooms, perhaps lost in her own thoughts. You’ve definitely begun to freak out, realising that your friendship may never be the same.
You are approaching your room as she unlocks hers, and you almost turn away before something catches your eye.
The door to her room. She left it open.
Heartbeat thudding loudly in your ears, you approach the door and push inside before you can change your mind. Her uniform is on the floor.
That’s the last thing you notice before she’s on you, naked and pressing you up against the closing door, her lips locking fiercely with yours.

Maria Hill x Reader
genre: fluff and a tinsy bit of angst

You were never one for relationships. They never went as planned. You always felt as if you gave them your all just so you could get nothing in return. They took a toll in you. Having to take care of your previous partners started feeling less and less like a relationship and more and more like you were their parent. A chore.
This all changed when you met Maria. You were a little reluctent to allow yourself to fall for her at first. Normally when things were too good to be true they were. But in her case, too good to be true was false. You worked at S.H.I.E.L.D for years and some how managed to climb yourself up the ladder. In good ole too good to be true fashion, you found yourself not knowing what to do once S.H.I.E.L.D when down back when HYDRA was exposed for its infultration. Frustrated that all of your hardwork seemed to slip through the cracks, you moped in your apartment for weeks until Maria Hill herself knocked on your door. Her confidence always atracted you. She always knew what she was doing, how she was doing it, and when it would get done. The second she offered you a job you knew there was no way you could say no (even if you were desparate.)
From that day forward you were helping out with the Avengers at the compound in Upstate New York. During that time with Maria you couldn't ignore thestolen glances and secret brushes of her hands anywhere she could get them. What truly stuck out to you was her need to protect and take care of you. During the day she would make sure you were doing your work in her stern mannor, but would still go out of her way to make sure you're eating on time and getting the propper breaks you needed. At events before and during your relationship she would shoot anyone a glare who she deemed was looking at you too long. When you went on missions she made sure to pack your bag for you. She would kill you if you told anyone but Maria loves leaving little candies and notes along the crevaces of your bags and clothing just so you can remember to come home to her.
If you ever were to come back injured all hell would break loose. Once you were coming back from a solo mission gone horribly wrong. Everything aabout this mission when completley tits up and you had no back up to call in. It was a miracle that you came back alive. As soon as you landed, Dr.Cho and her staff were waiting to help you. You had two bullet wounds and a plethora of bruises and a ffew broken bones. You didn't know but what you did know was that it hurt like hell. Maria had stayed on the phone with you when you were making it back from the mission.
Sobbs wracked through her body as she tried her best to keep you awake.
"So help me god, Y/N you have to stay awake. For me, baby, please."
That is comething you will never forget. The sound of her completley breaking down was close in pain to the level of pain you were feeling in the moment.
Once you stepped foot on the helecoptar pad, Maria sprang into action. She wouldn't allow for anyone to touch you until sheset you down on the gurney. She wispered "you're going to be okay"s and "i wont let anything happen to you's as you were rushed to the operation table. The last thing you remeber before you surgey was the sweet kiss Maria panted on your forehead. You used your last bit of energy to let out a soft "i love you".
She was a wreck the whole sixteen hours you were asleep after surgey. She blaimed herself for not being able to protect you. From then on, Maria would look out for you in every aspect that she could. Tony liked to call it her being up your ass, but when it came down to it he knew he would be the exact same for Pepper.
You surprisingly didn't mind. You love your girlfriend and love being around her. What you didn't like is when she would dictatee when and how you were able to do your job. You teo have gotten in many arguments because of that, but at the end of the day you know she's doing it out of fear of loosing you and she knows that she can't stop you from doing the job that you love.
When it came time to marry, Maria promised you one thing in your vowes.
'I promise to always be your protector. That family comes first and will always come first. If we ever have little ones of our own I want you to know that there would be nothing that I wouldn't do for them to grow up happy and heatly. You are my world Y/FN Y/M/N Hill. If I were told today that I had to quit my job I would quit happy. The only hero I need to be is a hero for my family.'

What Maria doesn’t know can’t hurt her.
That was the mantra you had been following for the past week or so. The mantra that was saving you from your paranoia and anxiety from the unpleasant visit that your ex-wife decided to spring upon you. The whole week had gone by in a blur, Bucky was by your side as much as his job allowed, and you had kept your promise of staying away from the office. The less Carol could track you to places, other than your home, the less likely it was for her to run into Maria.
You needed to keep Maria safe.
You sighed when you heard your phone ring, for what must have been the millionth time this afternoon, and you rubbed your hands across your face before answering the phone with no enthusiasm. “Y/N Y/L/N speaking, how can I help you?”
“Y/N? I-It’s Maria, Maria Hill. Is now a bad time?”
“Maria,” you breathed, immediately standing up from your desk a smile stretched across your features. “No, no, now is a great time. How are you? Is everything okay?”
“Everything’s fine with me, I just…I’ve been worried about you. You’ve not been in the office for a few days at least which isn’t like you, a-and I haven’t heard anything from you since you left the house the morning after our date. Have I done something wrong?”
“No, Maria. You haven’t done anything wrong, I’m so sorry. I’ve just been really swamped with work, and other things, and I just seem to have completely lost track of my life for like the past week. How have you been? How’s Amelia?”
“I’ve been okay, I’ve kept going and things like that. Amelia has been interrogating me about where you are and why you haven’t called to come and play. I just let her know that you were busy with work, so you don’t need to worry about anything. I um…”
“What is it?”
“I miss you. I know that sounds silly and maybe even stupid, but I do miss you. I enjoyed our date, and our time together, and I was just wondering if you wanted to do anything again soon. I was thinking maybe if it was me who chose this time, we could come back here again after? You don’t have to though, I’m sorry if I’m being too muc-”
“No. Don’t you apologise, you haven’t done anything wrong and you definitely aren’t too much. A date night sounds amazing, I’ve missed you too…I’m sorry I’ve been away. When um…when are you wanting to do this date night?” You questioned as you stood by your home office window, scanning your surroundings before you closed your blinds once more. You started to pace your office and chewed on your nails before you sat back down.
“Oh- I um, I didn’t think that far ahead…I don’t know why but I thought that you were going to be harder to convince,” Maria muttered quietly, to the point that you could barely hear her. You frowned at her words and felt a harsh pang in your chest, it was never your intention to upset Maria or make her feel unimportant, so maybe it was time to take a different approach. If you didn’t change your tactic, you were going to lose Maria completely.
“Maria-” you sighed, trying to find the best way of wording to make sure you didn’t upset her even more.
“No, no, it’s okay. I just…I shouldn’t have said that and that was really rude of me. Are you free on Friday? So 3 days away, if you’re busy or don’t want to that’s okay. We could always find some other time to do something together.”
“Friday is great, perfect even. I’m excited to see you, genuinely,” you smiled into the phone, gently chewing your lip.
“I’m excited to see you too,” Maria replied, shyness evident in her tone, and you smiled at her confession. “How does my house at 7 sound? And then I can direct you to where we need to go and what I have planned, is that okay?”
“That sounds like a date to me, sweetheart, I’ll speak to you soon. Tell trouble that um, that bubbles misses her a lot and I’ll come to see her as soon as I can? If that’s okay with you of course.”
“I’ll let her know, she misses you too. She’ll be looking forward to the next time she sees you, I’ll see you soon. Bye Y/N.”
“Bye Maria,” you replied gently, hanging up the phone once you heard Amelia shouting for her in the background. You stood from your office chair once more and made your way downstairs to the kitchen to start your dinner, patting Thor on his head as you walked past. “Come on bud, time for dinner.”
As you were sitting down to eat your food, your phone went off once more and you subconsciously smiled when you heard it and assumed it must be Maria messaging you to confirm the details about your date on Friday. Your smile slowly turned into a frown as you read the message once more, to clarify what you saw was right.
‘Oh, I forgot to mention that someone came by the office yesterday and they were looking for you. A tall blonde woman, she mentioned that she was an old friend of yours, a Carol Danvers? I just said that I wasn’t sure when you’d be back in and she mentioned dropping in another time. Don’t forget, Friday at 7! :)’
Carol did the one thing you thought she wasn’t going to do, and that was to make direct contact with Maria. Maria seemed fine though, she didn’t sound hurt or scared so that’s got to mean something, right? This hole was getting deeper and deeper, yet you were hoping that you had done the right thing by keeping her in the dark.
~~
Friday came quickly, but you were definitely ready to see Maria and finally get to spend some time with her after not seeing her for so long. You had some making up to do to the younger woman. After the phone call you had with Maria, and the text that stated Carol had been coming to the office, you made sure to check in more frequently but not to the point it was concerning. Bucky, being the all-knowing best friend, once again tried to talk you into telling Maria what was happening with Carol but you were adamant she’d be safer if she didn’t know as much. Carol had only visited the office once more since Maria had told you about that first visit. Luckily you had caught her in the front reception to take her harsh and threatening words before you sent her away and continued your way inside.
The ambience of Maria’s neighbourhood was settling, there wasn’t the hustle-bustle of people like there was in yours, and luckily there wasn’t anybody who decided to look down their nose at anybody. You jogged up to her front steps, glancing around once more, and smiled before you knocked on the door, fixed the bouquet of flowers that were secured in your hands, and tapped your foot nervously as you waited for the door to open. You hoped that you came face to face with Maria rather than Natasha because you were sure that you were back in her bad books.
“Bubbles!!”
Amelia’s loud voice dragged you out of your swirling thoughts and you smiled wide and knelt to her height as she threw her arms around you. “Hey kiddo, it’s so nice to see you. I love your hair,” you complimented, standing back to full height, and ran your fingers across her braids. Amelia wriggled excitedly in your arms, rambling nonsense at you, and then tucked her head in the crook of your neck as you carried her inside and shut the door behind you.
“Amelia, what have I told you about opening the door without mommy or auntie Natty?” Maria chastised, giving the young girl a stern motherly stare. Amelia visibly shrunk further into your arms, hiding her head further into your neck, and clutched her bunny to her chest. “I’m sorry mommy, you just said that bubbles were coming soon and I got excited…I just wanted to see her, please don’t be mad.”
You gave Maria a small smile, not wanting to interrupt her parenting, and she sent you one back before she sighed and walked over to the two of you. Gently, Maria turned Amelia’s face to face her and gave her a small smile and a kiss on the nose. “I’m not mad sweetie, I just worry. Please just make sure that auntie Natty, or I, are with you if you open the door, okay? Because it might not have been bubbles, it could have been somebody else.” Amelia nodded in agreement, giving Maria a peck on the lips before resting back against you, and you smiled turning your full attention to Maria. “Hey,” you spoke gently, “You look beautiful as always and it’s really nice to see you.” The brunette smiled at your words and took another step closer to you; your breath caught in your throat as you watched her closely but then nerves struck the both of you and you cleared your throat passing her the flowers. “I got you these, I hope that they’re okay.”
“They’re beautiful, thank you,” Maria smiled as she pressed a kiss to your cheek, making them flush. You watched as she made her way into the kitchen to put the flowers in a vase and let out a small sigh at the fact you chickened out from giving her a kiss. What if she was still upset? What if she didn’t want to kiss you? What if you’d already blown what you had with her?
“Y/N?”
You zoned back into reality, looking at Maria who was already looking at you with concern, and you smiled as she made her way back to you. Slowly, Maria lifted her hand to your face which gave you time to move away if you wanted and you smiled pressing a kiss against her palm before she fully cupped your cheek. “Is everything okay? You keep zoning out on me. We don’t have to do the date tonight if you don’t want to, we can reschedule, I won’t be mad or upset.”
“No, it’s not that,” you elaborated, shifting a sleepy Amelia in your arms. “It’s just…I really wanted to kiss you, but I didn’t want to cross a line and upset you. I’m sorry if I seem a little on edge, I’ve just got a lot of things I need to take care of and it’s starting to get to me a little.”
Maria smiled shyly, looking up at you with her bottom lip caught between her teeth, and you couldn’t help but smirk at her shyness of your affection. “You really want to kiss me?” Maria questioned quietly, closing the distance between you both, and smiled more when you wrapped your free arm around her waist nodding in agreement. “Then what’s stopping you?” You hummed in amusement, your grip on her waist tightened, and you leaned down and firmly pressed your lips to her own. The brunette’s hands made their way to rest on your chest as she reciprocated the affection, smiling against your lips. It wasn’t until you heard someone clear their throat that you pulled away; you gave Natasha a shy smile and Maria leaned into your side. “Hi Natasha, it’s nice to see you.”
“It’s Amelia’s bedtime,” Natasha stated bluntly, her eyes narrowed at you. You cleared your throat awkwardly and nodded, Natasha still staring you down with intent of making you nervous. Amelia shuffled slightly in your arms, still clutching her bunny to her chest, and you slowly started to pass her over to Natasha but were stopped by a loud whine from Amelia. “Wan’ bubbles to put me to bed, they comfy.” You internally winced at the dark look that spread across Natasha’s face, but you knew better than to try and argue with Amelia, or Natasha. So, you agreed to the young girl’s request after checking that it was okay with Maria and followed her instructions to go up to Amelia’s room to tuck her into bed. “You, you little madam, are gonna get me in trouble with your Aunt Natty,” you teased playfully, tickling her tummy before you tucked her covers in tightly, and turned on her night light. A small pout formed on the 4-year-old’s face but you pressed a gentle kiss to her nose and then her forehead which made her burst into giggles and you smiled softly. “Go to sleep bub. I’ll see you soon, okay?” Amelia nodded, rubbing her eyes tiredly, and leaned up to press a kiss to your lips like she had done with Maria earlier and you smiled adoringly at her. “Goodnight kiddo.”
A soft smile adorned your face as you made your way to her bedroom door, your heart combusting when you heard a small “Night Night bubbles, I love you lots like jelly tots,” come from Amelia who hard turned over to fall asleep. “I love you lots too, little one,” you replied softly and quietly shut her bedroom door before you made your way back downstairs to Maria. Hushed voices floated through the hallway from the front room, but it was hard for you to make out what was being said, and it wasn’t that you wanted to eavesdrop but you were worried if you had overstepped a boundary. Within reason, you had made your footsteps slightly heavier so that the two women would be more likely to recognise your incoming presence and you made your way through the door as Natasha left into the kitchen.
“Is everything okay?” You questioned tenderly, frowning at the fact Maria had her hand against her forehead as though she was stressed about something. “If you need me to leave, I’ll leave. I’m sorry if I overstepped a boundary or anything along that line, it wasn’t my intention. I couldn’t help but overhear you and Natasha speaking in hushed voices.” Maria jumped at the sound of your voice and you gave her a sympathetic smile, opening your arms in a silent invitation for Maria to come and stand with you. The gentle kisses you peppered against her hairline made it that she started to relax in your arms, so you began to sway smoothly. “Natasha is just concerned that I’m going to get hurt. She’s just being protective, but I guess I know where she’s coming from. She just didn’t like that you hadn’t spoken to me at all or appeared to see me or anything like that after leaving so suddenly that morning. She was just worried that you weren’t fully in I guess? Which it’s okay if you’re not yet, I mean, it’s only our second date and I-”
You cut off Maria’s rambling by pressing your lips against hers, your hands clasped tightly on her hips, and pulled her flush against your body as she rounded her arms around your neck to thread her fingers through your hair. A small moan left Maria’s mouth as you gently tugged on her bottom lip whilst you pulled away and then rested your foreheads together, your hands making your way to her face to run your thumbs across her cheekbones. “It doesn’t matter if it’s only the second date, I wouldn’t have started and tried this with you if I wasn’t going to be fully in. I’m not dating you to pass the time Maria, I’m dating you because I’m interested in you and I have so much desire to be around you. It’s okay for Natasha to have her doubts; like you said she’s really protective of you and I’ve not really given her the best starting impressions.”
Maria sniffled wiping at her eyes and you frowned using your thumb to catch the tears that she missed and pressed a chaste kiss to her lips. Her sniffles slowly died down and you rested your chin on the top of her head as you held her tightly in your arms, and Maria let out a shaky breath against the crook of your neck before relaxing into your hold. “You’re not dating me to pass the time? You’re all in?” Maria questioned insecurity laced within her voice, as she gripped onto you tighter. You chuckled gently and tightened your arms around her and leaned back, to the point you lifted her off the floor which made her let out a small shriek of surprise and nodded looking at her with your full attention. “I’ve never been a benchwarmer, sweetheart. I’m fully in for as long as you want me. Now, shall we go and enjoy that date m’lady?” “I’d love to,” Maria breathed with relief. You smiled once more and walked Maria to your car, opening the door for her, kissing her cheek, and then climbed into the driver's seat to follow Maria’s directions.
The car ride was a calm atmosphere, all tension and paranoia had fizzled out after leaving the house, and Maria’s hand hadn’t left yours unless it was to move to your thigh when you gear shifted. Delicately, your thumb ran over the back of Maria’s hand before you pressed it against your lips and pulled up outside of the restaurant. You swallowed thickly when you recognised the exterior but quickly replaced the small grimace you had with a smile and made your way out of the car to open the door for your date. Maria thanked you with a kiss on your cheek and moved to hold your hand once more, entwining your fingers comfortably, and you smiled pressing a kiss to her temple as you walked inside.
~~
Like the last time - your date went perfectly, and you were both enjoying each other’s time and attention. You couldn’t help but smile at the fact Maria’s foot kept gently stroking your calf, in a way of grounding herself and ensuring that she still had physical contact, and you smiled at her as she finished her glass of wine. The brunette’s cheeks were flushed from her alcohol consumption, the two glasses of wine making her feel warm inside, and she trapped her bottom lip between her teeth as she listened to you talk about a memory from your past. The stare Maria had on you finally made you start to stumble on your words, and your face flushed with embarrassment. “Is there something the matter? Have I got spaghetti sauce on my face or something?” You mumbled with insecurity as you shifted in your spot. “No, no. What was it you said to me on our first date? Oh yeah, you said ‘No, I just think you’re breathtaking, I love looking at you’,” Maria recited word for word.
The look of shock spread across your face, at the fact Maria remembered the words you uttered on your first date, and you smiled bringing her hands towards your mouth to press a soft kiss to her knuckles. Now it was Maria’s turn for her face to flush, especially when you brought yourself closer to her, your face a mere few inches away from hers and you hummed in appreciation. “It sounds as though I speak a lot of truth. I’m very lucky to have such a gorgeous woman wanting to go on a second date with me,” you flirted easily, finishing off with a cheeky wink. Maria looked at you in total shock before she threw her napkin at you in a playful manner, “You ass! You totally just jumped on my flirt wagon to make it do a u-turn for you to flirt with me? Real smooth, Y/L/N…real smooth.” You smiled cheekily and threw the napkin back at the younger woman as you stood from your chair, Maria watching your every move with playfully narrowed eyes. You pressed a chaste kiss to her lips before telling her you were going to the bathroom, to which she nodded and flagged down the waiter for another round of drinks, and she decided now would be a good time to revert to water rather than wine.
You weren’t gone long, but apparently, you were gone long enough that Maria had made friends as you saw what seemed to be 2 other women sitting with her at your dinner table. As you made your way over, you made sure you looked presentable and hyped yourself up for more social interaction, a small smile plastered on your face. Once you arrived at Maria, you gently placed your hands on her shoulders and leaned down to press a kiss on her cheek. “Sorry I was gone, sweetheart. Want to introduce me to your friends?” Maria nodded enthusiastically and cleared her throat before she started to introductions. “This is Kyla, and this is -” Maria’s words became muffled in your ears as you felt your whole world begin to collapse in on you when you came face to face with Carol, your ex-wife, sat in the chair next to your date…next to your Maria. A small nudge caught your attention and you looked down at Maria whose brows were furrowed in concern. “Y/N, is everything okay?”
You swallowed thickly, suddenly feeling overheated and beyond anxious, but you nodded your head ‘yes’. You then slowly moved to sit next to Maria, on her free side, not giving Carol the satisfaction of looking at her. “I’m fine, thank you,” you murmured quietly, ignoring Carol’s smirk, and grabbed your glass of water. The air became awkward quite quickly so Maria cleared her throat and wrapped her arms around your bicep, her head rested on your shoulder with an adoring smile, before she pressed a gentle kiss to the underside of your jaw. “This is my date, Y/N. Isn’t she just gorgeous?” Carol smirked at Maria’s words and leaned forward, her elbow resting on the table as her chin rested on the palm of her hand. “Absolutely dashing, I would love to hear about how you two came together. We have all night don’t forget,” Carol teased, practically undressing you with her eyes, and your grip on your water tightened.
You were a game piece. A stupid pawn that was being sent head first into the battle of Carol’s mind games once again. Except this time around, there was a fire in you a fire that was enough for you to turn around and decide that this is not how your story is going to end.
You were going to rewrite the rules of this game, and you were going to win it.

"Well maybe if you had done the paperwork by the deadline I gave you, you wouldn't even be in this mess, Hill."
Maria tensed her jaw at the coldness of her bosses' voice. She had honestly never met someone so work-driven, so rude and so non-understanding until she met you.
"Well Miss Y/L/N, if your clients actually sent the paperwork in when they were meant to, I'd have gotten it done on time and ready for you."
You sharply turned your head to glare down the woman who suddenly had the confidence to speak back to you, something not any of the other staff have ever done. You watched as Maria glared back at you, folding her obviously toned arms across her chest. You pushed your tongue into your cheek before moving it along your teeth before making a tutting sound.
"I didn't ask for attitude, Hill. I asked for you to get your shit together, I want them on my desk by 5 o'clock."
Maria threw her papers at the door after you had stormed out before pulling her knees up to her chest beginning to tear up. When she started this job she loved it, thought you were lovely until you just, wasn't. Nobody in the building had any idea about the sudden personality change you had, but they all knew better than to question it.
Maria sighed to herself walking over to the door of her office, kneeling down to pick up the papers that she threw in frustration. She sniffled walking back to her desk but her face broke out into a smile seeing that her best friend and roommate, Natasha Romanoff, was calling her.
"Hey Maria, I was wondering if you wanted to do takeout tonight? I know we said we were gonna have steak and veg or whatever but I honestly can't be arsed to cook. I'll pay because I know it was my turn to cook, sound like a good deal?"
Maria laughed at her friends' bluntness before raising her shoulder towards her ear to keep her phone still as she reshuffled her papers back together before placing them neatly onto her desk.
"Takeout sounds good, we need to go somewhere that does nuggets or else Amelia won't eat it, you know how she is. I honestly don't know what to do with her when it comes to her not trying new food, I've done everything the parenting books say and I just-."
"Maria, stop it. You're being too harsh on yourself, those parenting books are a load of shit. Besides, she's 4, she's not really gonna be interested in anything that isn't animal shaped."
Maria sighed rubbing her face knowing her friend was right.
"You're right, I'm sorry, I'm just not having a good day at work today, it's driving me up the wall. Could you do me a favour and pick Amelia up from school? Tell her that I'm sorry. My boss is being a fucking ass and has given me some paperwork that is virtually impossible to get done right now."
"Of course, you know I don't mind going to pick up my little partner in crime. I'll see you at home okay? Give that bitch hell."
"I will do, bye Nat."
Maria hung up her phone before turning back to her paperwork, her mind constantly wandering to thoughts of you. She missed the way you used to be so carefree and understanding of everyone in the workplace, yeah you could still be strict but you weren't just a straight-up bitch for no reason, it was exhausting. She sighed sitting back down at her desk getting back to work on the files you demanded from her.
You paced around your office clock-watching as you became more and more stressed. You knew that what Maria said was right but there was no chance you were going to admit that. You made sure to send a stern email to the clientele to ensure that any other forms must be delivered on time otherwise they will be ignored, the process delayed. Your head snapped towards the door when you heard it open, you straightened up when you saw Maria walk in with a large number of various papers, avoiding eye contact with you.
"Here are the papers you wanted," she muttered as she didn't even try to catch your attention. You glanced at her, taking in her outfit and her prominent features. You couldn't stop yourself from staring at her chiselled cheekbones and jawline. She looked up at you when you didn't bother to reply, her piercing blue eyes staring into your own before she quickly looked back towards the floor.
"Yeah, thank you, it's about time," you muttered more to yourself than Maria but that didn't stop her from hearing you. She scoffed slamming the papers onto your desk causing you to jump slightly.
"Do you wanna know something? I just worked my fucking ass off getting these papers done for you. I couldn't even pick my daughter up from school because of it and I just-," You interrupted Maria, tilting your head slightly, "You have a kid?"
Maria's jaw tensed even more, mentally cursing herself for admitting she had a daughter. She made sure to keep it on the down-low so that nobody could try and say that her home life interferes with her work. Maria decided to ignore your comment and continued ranting
"So next time, why don't you show a bit of fucking gratitude and appreciation instead of being a bitch," Maria snapped venomously throwing you a vicious look and you watched as she grabbed her bag from the floor, striding towards the door slamming it as she walked out, you shouting after her.
"THAT'S A DISCIPLINARY, HILL!"
*****
Maria threw her shoes off at the door, dropping her back before wiping her eyes as she took a deep breath. The last thing she wanted was for her daughter to see her upset, she always did her best to make sure that her work never interfered with her home life, but recently that was proving a challenge. She walked towards her living room, a smile spreading across her face when she heard laughter erupting from both her daughter and Natasha. Natasha looked up at her exhaustion-ridden friend sending her a sad, but understanding, smile.
Maria smiled back at her friend, falling to her knees when her daughter realised her mommy had finally come home.
"Mommy!"
Amelia sprinted over to her mom, throwing herself into her arms, immediately being pulled into the comfort of her mother's chest. Maria believed that her daughters' hugs and kisses could mend the world, especially her world.
"There's my beautiful little girl. How was school?"
"It was so fun mommy, Auntie Nat came inside to get my drawings and said hi to Mr Barnes. He went all shy and so did Auntie Natty, it was silly mommy," Amelia smiled wide whilst answering her mom. Maria looking over to her red-headed friend, she watched as Natasha groaned, trying to hide herself in the sofa to cover her embarrassment considering Maria very much knows her best friend is head over heels for her daughters' teacher.
"Do you want to order the food, Nat?" Maria questioned as she took a seat next to her best friend, Amelia still comfortably in her arms, running her fingers through her thick, dark hair before peppering her head with kisses.
"Sounds like a plan," she muttered before trudging to the kitchen.
---
Once the food was eaten, Nat and Maria found themselves cuddling on the sofa which wasn't an uncommon occurrence due to the close relationship the duo had. Maria still had Amelia in her arms, refusing to take her to bed just yet (even if she was asleep) because she needed love and cuddles off of her favourite little person.
Natasha looked down at Maria, whose head was on her chest gently running her fingers through her hair, "So what did the mega-bitch have to moan about today?" she asked.
"What didn't she have to moan about," Maria sighed before continuing, "Usually, I wouldn't even let her get under my skin, but there was something about today where I was ready to lose it. Obviously, I spoke back to defend myself but all of it was weird, she was weird."
Natasha frowned confused at the older woman's statement before continuing to press for answers, "What do you mean she was weird?" she asked curiously. Natasha kept her focus on the older woman as she watched her brows furrow trying to think of a way to answer.
"Well, when I eventually took her the stupid amount of papers, it was like she was her own little world," Maria recollected before she fidgeted to get herself more comfortable, "It was like she was staring at me, taking me in, I felt like I was her prey. I'm not even lying when I say the look she had in her eyes was animalistic."
Natasha groaned as she rolled her eyes, knowing that Maria had spoken before about the fact she had a large crush on you even if you were a bitch. 'There's something about her that is captivating, the mystery behind her eyes, the brilliant shape of her body, it's intoxicating' were Maria's exact words as far as Natasha could remember.
"Just ask her out Maria, you're honestly infatuated with her," Natasha insisted as she slowly stood up from the couch, taking Amelia into her arms being careful not to wake her before continuing, "I honestly don't understand what's stopping you, then again I don't know why you fancy her when she's such a bitch."
This time it was Maria's turn to groan at the younger woman, "Okay then, why don't you ask James Barnes out then? You're infatuated with her too," Maria teased as she followed Natasha up the stairs, watching her as she put Amelia to bed.
Natasha shrugged as she finished tucking the small girl into her covers, walking back out of the room towards her own, Maria hot on her heels. "I just, I don't know," she muttered, "What if he doesn't like me and gets weird about how close we are?"
Maria smiled sadly at her best friend before taking a seat on the bed, "I'm sure he already adores you, Nat. Besides, he knows how close we are and if he has an issue he'll just have to suck it up because you and I both know we're not gonna change," Maria reassured.
"I guess you're right," Natasha sighed looking over at her best friend, "So how come you haven't acted on your feelings yet? There's more to it than her just being a mega-bitch, I can read you like a book."
Maria leant against the doorframe gently biting at her nails, pulling her hand away to speak seriously, "I'm scared, I don't want another relationship where my feelings are going to be disregarded...I most definitely don't want another one where I'm going to be thrown about like a used doll they're finished caring about," She muttered weakly wiping her eyes with her sleeves, "Besides, I don't think she's even gay. Even if she is, I'm pretty sure she doesn't like or want kids and I'm not choosing someone to possibly share a bed with, over my daughter."
Natasha nodded understanding her friend's situation. She didn't hesitate to pull her in for a tight hug after she realised Maria was beginning to get upset. "He didn't deserve either of you, you two didn't deserve what he did, you know that right?" Natasha cooed.
Maria nodded against Natasha's shoulder, pulling away letting Nat wipe her eyes gently, "I'm going to get some sleep, I can only imagine I'll have a shit tonne of paperwork tomorrow. I want to be able to get through it quickly so Amelia and I can at least try and have a good 'bring your kid to work' day. Goodnight Nat."
"Night Maria, sleep well."
Maria ventured back to her own room getting into bed letting her mind drift to thoughts of you before allowing sleep to overcome her.
*****
It was 'bring your kid to work' day which happens once every month and each time, every month, you know you are colder than usual. You wished this day just didn't exist, the fact you had to watch these parental relationships all day just didn't sit right with you, you hated it.
You sighed as you clambered out of bed, stumbling towards your closest as you rubbed your eyes tiredly. "Today is going to be hell," you mumbled to yourself before throwing a glance at your bed, smiling when you see your puppy all curled up, still asleep on their side of the bed. If you weren't sharing your bed with anyone, why shouldn't your pup be your main priority?
You decided on wearing a white shirt accompanied by a yellow bralette underneath and matching yellow pants. As you were putting your shoes on your arm was nudged by a wet nose. You turned your attention to your golden retriever breaking out into a wide smile.
"Awww, there's my baby. Who's my good boy, huh? Is Thor my good boy?"
He barked happily as you gave him rubs all over his tummy before standing up and grabbing your car keys, "Hope will be here to take you on a walk later bud, I'll see you later," you chimed receiving a bark in reply before you left to work.
Your mind wandered back to the previous day, remembering how Maria Hill had stood her ground against you, as much as you respected her sticking up for herself, you hated the attitude that followed. You sighed as you ran your fingers through your hair, gently massaging the back of your scalp. You knew you were going to have to speak to her today about the utter disrespect from yesterday's actions.
You walked into the building keeping your head up high, watching as people immediately scattered from being in your way as you strode confidently towards your office. You looked around, your cold eyes meeting Maria's piercing, but warm, blue ones. Your brain didn't even have a chance to catch up with you before you bellowed across the office, "HILL!"
Everybody's heads snapped towards you, including Maria's, the fear and nervousness spread across her not being able to hidden. Maria visibly gulped at the sternness of your voice before you carried on.
"My office, right now."
You stormed into your office as everyone turned their heads to Maria giving her a sympathetic look, she could feel her heart beating out of her chest. She knelt down gently stroking her daughters face who was occupied with her colours, "I'll be right back sweetie," Maria mumbled earning a nod in return from Amelia.
Maria walked to your office, knocking gently before coming inside, gulping slightly as she saw you sat at your desk with a scowl on your face. You motioned to the chair in front of your desk, "Sit down Maria. I think we need to speak about last night," you pressed.
Maria nodded playing with her hands, refusing to meet your eye or look at you. You believed it was because of her regretting her actions, but in reality, she was finding it hard to concentrate due to your semi-revealing outfit, showing off a dagger tattoo in the middle of your chest she'd never seen before.
"I'm going to warn you once, and once only," you stood from your chair resting your hands on your desk leaning forward before speaking darkly, "If you ever speak to me like you did last night, ever again, I will have you straight out on your ass," Maria stayed as still as she could, hoping the ground would just open up underneath her and swallow her whole, the tears in her eyes threatening to fall.
You grew impatient of the fact she wasn't looking at you, didn't show any signs of listening to you and didn't reply. Without even thinking you slammed your clenched fist down on your glass desk causing it to crack before shouting, "Do I make myself clear, Hill?"
Maria yelped in surprise when your hand connected with the desk as she quickly nodded absolutely terrified of your current state, "Y-yes! I understand, I-I'm so sorry," she whimpered, the tears finally coursing down her cheeks.
You nodded sitting back down in your seat, dismissing her without uttering another word. Maria quickly stood from the chair making her way to the women's bathroom, flashbacks of her past relationship flickering through her mind. The shouting, the aggression, the physical aspect, all of it still terrifying for the brunette.
Maria sobbed as she could feel her chest getting tighter, immediately realising she was having an anxiety attack due to the events that just occurred. She did her best to control her breathing as she sobbed. Her mind kept flicking back to you and your actions, as much as she should AND wanted to hate you, she just couldn't.
Once fully calmed down, she splashed her face with some cold water to hide the evidence of tears before walking back to her daughter who hadn't moved from Maria's desk. It was at this point Maria regretted bringing her daughter to work with her and wanted this day to go as quick as it could.
---
It was finally lunchtime and you paced your office waiting for your new intern to come back with the food that you had ordered, you had been craving it all day and decided you deserved to break your diet. You sighed as your mind replayed the events of this morning, the way that the usual chirpy, happy and confident woman sat broken, terrified and nervous in the seat that was in front of your desk.
Of course, you felt bad about what happened, but you couldn't have people walking all over you. You knew deep down that you acting like that wouldn't change the trauma you faced during the fairly recent divorce you've had to deal with in the past few years. Your actions were toxic, you knew that, but you didn't want to show any kind of weakness.
You heard your office door open and huffed slightly, "If you're not my dinner, get the hell out of my office." You heard no response so you lifted your head, hoping to see your dinner, only to be met with disappointment when you didn't see anybody. Not until you looked down towards the floor anyway, your eyes fixated on the child that had wandered into your office clutching a...bunny?
You watched as her eyes took in everything around your office. She blinked slowly looking longingly at each piece of art plastered on your wall before you spoke softly, "Can I help you?"
The little girl's eyes trailed up from your feet to your face as you raised your eyebrow slightly. You couldn't help but smile gently and you bent down to get closer to her height, "It's okay, I'm not gonna hurt you, did you mean to come in here?" you questioned gently. The little girl shook her head at you moving her hands to her mouth. You internally grimaced before mentioning her to walk over to you. You watched as she hesitated at first but then slowly makes her way over to you, you gently grabbed her wrists pulling her hands away from her mouth.
"You don't want to do that honey, hands and fingers are yucky," you smiled gently. She nodded going to wipe her hands on her clothes but you grabbed the tissues from the top of your desk, gently cleaning her hands before letting go. You were startled slightly when she pushed her bunny in front of your face before muttering, "Bunny's turn."
You laughed softly as you made sure to get a fresh tissue before 'wiping' the hands of the cute little girl's bunny. She watched you with a wide smile before hugging her bunny tightly, you smiled down at her, "Okay, so how did you end up in my office?"
She looked up at you nervously before tearing up slightly, "I-I sorry, I was exploring and got lost," she mumbled sadly. You frowned softly wiping away her tears with your thumb before lifting her up and resting her on your hip, "It's okay sweetie, I'm not mad but can you tell me your name please?" you questioned gently.
She immediately rested her head on your shoulder, nuzzling her head into the crook of your neck as she mumbled, "Amelia, my mommy sometimes calls me Mimi, my Auntie Natty calls me trouble," she stated happily. You rubbed her back letting her calm down before nodding, "I'm Y/N, that's all that people call me."
Amelia pondered for a moment before turning her full attention to you and smiling, "Bubbles!" She shouted to you, your eyebrow unintentionally raising, "Bubbles?" you questioned. Amelia nodded excitedly and you just smiled going along with your newfound nickname. You were both interrupted with a knock at the door as your intern came in with your food, your face automatically went to a blank expression as you thanked them for the food, watching them leave.
You placed Amelia on the ground before sitting down next to her on the floor as you unwrapped your food. Amelia watched you curiously, the strong aroma of the Chinese food filling her nostrils making her tummy rumble. You looked at her concerned, "Are you hungry, sweetheart?" Amelia nodded slightly watching as you put some noodles, meat and veg into a spare dish that came with your order.
You gathered some noodles with your chopsticks, gently blowing on them to cool them down, turning your attention to Amelia as your hand hovered below the chopsticks, "Here you go honey, open up," you encouraged. Amelia pulled a slight face at you making your eyebrow raise before eventually giving in and opening her mouth as you feed her the noodles. You watched her closely as she chewed the food and swallowed and then smiled wide at you, "Nummy!"
You smiled wide at the excitement in her voice before going on to attempt to teach her how to use chopsticks as you both sat and ate the Chinese takeout on the floor of your office, completely oblivious to the fact there was a certain Brunette rushing around the building looking for her daughter.
---
Maria whimpered slightly as more tears threatened to spill from her eyes, she had only turned her back for a second and then Amelia wasn't by her side anymore. Maria couldn't think of anything worse, she had already been in trouble with you today, the last thing she needed was you having another meltdown at her for losing her child in your building.
Maria's shouts echoed down the hallways as she frantically looked everywhere for Amelia. Her attention got caught when she heard Amelia's loud laughs. She followed the sound to your office immediately coming in without knocking but making sure to keep quiet. Maria froze at the sight in front of her, you were smiling wide whilst talking with Amelia before feeding her another mouthful of noodles, laughing loudly as she tried to stop them dangling out of her mouth.
Maria hadn't ever seen you this happy or relaxed in all the years she had been here. She was pretty sure she'd only ever seen you smile once and that was when she first joined the company and she accidentally bumped into you, it was only a week later you turned cold. Maria stayed quiet watching the both of you, this morning's meeting was long gone from her mind, now full of positive thoughts from seeing you interact with her daughter, her whole world. The way you had her in fits of giggles, the way you couldn't keep the smile from your own face never mind Amelia's.
She had never seen Amelia take to someone so quickly, she is used to her shying away from strangers but she welcomed you with open arms. It took Maria a minute to realise Amelia was...eating? She watched as you fed her yet another spoonful of the meat and veg, alongside some noodles which Amelia happily opened her mouth for, it was outstanding.
Maria watched you both for a little while longer and smiled when Amelia moved to sit in your lap as you showed her something on your phone whilst you ran your fingers through her hair. It was at this point Maria decided to let herself known by clearing her throat slightly, causing the two of you to jump.
Once you connected eyes with Maria you immediately stood, gently placing Amelia back on the ground before clearing your throat, your walls already building themselves back up, "Hill, what have I said about knocking before enter-" You were interrupted by Amelia running over towards Maria.
"Mommy!" Amelia cheered as your whole face flushed red, this honestly must have been the most embarrassing moment of your life. Maria smiled before lifting Amelia up placing her onto her hip before gently scolding her, "What did I tell you about running off? I've been looking everywhere for you, I was so worried Honey. Please, never do that to me again, okay?" Maria gushed to which Amelia immediately nodded.
You stood still in your spot like you were superglued to the floor, with no intentions of moving a muscle. Amelia looked over in your direction before turning back to her mother and begun gushing about the time you had spent together, "I was here with bubbles! We had some foods, watched some videos on her phone and she even let me draw on a big girl canvas!"
Maria tilted her head in confusion at the last statement before Amelia pointed to the piece of art from your wall, which was now discarded on the floor covered in pen and paint markings from Amelia. Maria couldn't stop the gasp that left her mouth knowing how much you valued your art and how expensive it was, she felt panic begin to course through her body scared for if you were going to lash out.
"Miss Y/L/N, I am so so sorry, i-if need be, please do take the cost of it out of my paycheck. Just please don't fire m-," Maria rambled
"That won't be necessary Maria, it is perfectly fine. Your daughter improved it in my opinion, now please, spend the rest of the day with your daughter, feel free to leave early if you'd like. I'll pick up the slack as the start of an apology to you because of my behaviour this morning, we will speak tomorrow."
Maria blinked slowly trying to get over the initial shock of your kindness towards her and nodded slightly before giving you a grateful smile, taking the opportunity to leave the office as Amelia leant over Maria's shoulder waving at you, smiling more as you wave back. Amelia looked at her mother before smiling, "Mommy, you've gone all red and shy like Auntie Natty does with Mr Barnes, you're silly!"
Maria chuckled at her daughter before glancing at your office once more. Maybe, just maybe, she could admit her feelings for you after all.
*****
It had been a few weeks since the interaction between you and Maria's daughter. Maria had replayed the scenario over and over in her head, the feelings she had tried ever so hard to push to the bottom, or even out of, her heart was fighting its way up to the surface. Amelia had non-stop spoken about you, asking when she'd next be able to see you so you both could play and if she was still your favourite little girl like you had told her.
Maria's heart was aching for you, you were the only person other than family, school and Natasha that she would trust her daughter to be with. Even if you did have this scary outer shell, she knew you were the softest person in the world when it came to her daughter. That was noticeable when the next time Maria had come to your office, the 'art' Amelia had done was right in the middle of your display wall being shown off to everyone. She didn't know how you had her wrapped around your little finger but here she was, begging for some sort of confidence to ask you out on a date.
Maria's thoughts were broken when she heard her daughter begin to whine as she held her mother's hand tightly as they trudged through the mall. It was the end of November, so nearly Christmas in a mother's mind, and Maria had promised to take Amelia to the mall to pick out presents for Auntie Nat, she was surprised when Amelia mentioned she wanted to get you something for Christmas too. The nickname 'Bubbles' had stuck and Amelia was very proud of it so her presents consisted of your own pack of bubbles, a bunny teddy similar to hers and then a mug which had bubbles all over with text saying 'Lady Bubbles'.
Once the mother-daughter duo had finished their shopping they headed down to the bus station ready to begin their hour journey home. Amelia was becoming fussy and whinging due to the fact that she missed her nap today and was now getting cranky. This was going to be a long journey.
--
It wasn't only Maria and Amelia who were out doing some Christmas shopping. You had taken yourself shopping to get some last-minute presents for certain family members, that you would have to send soon for them to reach overseas on time, that was all you thought you needed until your mind wandered to Maria and Amelia. Throughout the past few weeks, you had been doing your best to slowly make up for how badly you treated Maria that one morning, you didn't want to make the poor woman cry and even know she was still wary around you, you had scared her.
It started with small things like leaving a coffee and a muffin on her desk in a morning before you could actually gather your own courage to mutter a pathetic apology. The coffee and muffin became part of your usual morning routine, it was purely a habit now. You were disappointed in yourself about how bad the verbal apology was but the truth is, Maria made you nervous. It was like her eyes were staring into your soul, trying to figure you out and that terrified you.
You decided you were going to get Maria and Amelia both a gift for Christmas, your last way of making peace with yourself before attempting to give Maria a proper verbal apology. You figured that the best thing to do was get Amelia's presents first before trying to think of something for Maria.
You hoped that the presents which you bought for Amelia would be sufficient. You noticed from the afternoon she spent in your office that she loved to do anything creative or imaginary so you set your heart on getting her various art supplies, putting them in a pink box with bunnies plastered all over it.
Next up was Maria, at first you were really stumped until you walked past Swarovski and noticed little bangles that had initials on them. You decided that this would be the perfect gift for Maria and bought her a bangle with an A on it to stand for 'Amelia'. Once it was gift wrapped you left the store walking towards the bus stop and waited. It wasn't very often you used your car to come shopping if you knew there wasn't only one set place you were going to go, you also didn't feel the need to be one of those people who 'show off' their flashy cars.
You stepped onto the bus, scanning your bus pass against the machine before making your way towards a seat. Your attention was caught by a familiar voice and you turned your head to see, a very stressed, Maria trying to console her daughter to get her to calm down. You watched as tears streamed down the little as sobs fell out of her mouth until she looked at you. Once she caught eye contact with you and you gave her a gentle smile and a wave, the tears stopped, the sobs died down into little sniffles, and Maria's whole body relaxed.
Amelia hiccuped against her mother's shoulder before pointing over at you, "Bubbles mommy!" Maria turned to face you, smiling when she saw your lips curl up into a smile, "Miss Y/L/N, hi, how're you?" she quickly questioned. You let yourself smile a little bit more as you sat down across from Maria, Amelia immediately reaching for you causing Maria's cheeks to go bright red, "I am so so sorry about this."
You shook your head slightly, "I don't mind taking her, it's okay. You look like you could use a minute, it's honestly not a problem," you replied truthfully before gently taking Amelia from Maria's arms letting her cuddle into your chest. Maria smiled at the two of you before you spoke once more, "Also it's Y/N, out of work anyways, I wouldn't want people thinking I'm soft on you," you joked even though your heart wrenched at the truth that hid behind it.
Maria smiled gratefully at you as you stroked the hair out of Amelia's face causing her to giggle, "That tickles!" You smiled down at the girl in your arms before hearing Maria's voice, "So what's brought you out today? If you don't mind me asking," she quickly rambled. You shook your head smiling gently as Amelia played with the rings you had on your fingers.
"Nothing much especially, I bought some presents for my family which I need to get sent soon or they'll never make it in time for Christmas," you explained gently. Maria tilted her head, her eyebrows knitting themselves together in confusion which you quickly picked up on, "My parents and siblings, they uh, they live in England so I don't actually get to see them very much."
Maria gave you a sympathetic smile before you turned your attention back to Amelia who began speaking to you, "You must be really lonely, does that mean you'll be sad at Christmas?" Maria choked slightly on her bottle of water sending her daughter a warning glare, "Amelia! You can't say that. That was really rude honey," Maria sighed. She looked up at you doing her best to analyse your emotions but you were too quick and skilled to be able to hide it well. Maria sighed again rubbing her face horrifically embarrassed, "Y/N I'm sorry about that, she just doesn't underst-"
You raised your hand to cut her off, giving her a gentle smile as you nodded at her, "She doesn't understand, I know, but it's okay. Isn't it sweetheart?" You looked down at Amelia whose eyes were beginning to fill with tears as she sniffled. You hugged her tighter pressing a kiss at the top of her head, "Don't cry honey, it's okay, I know you didn't it and you didn't upset me, I pinky promise," you spoke softly before linking your pinky fingers together.
"Now, we need to stop that crying or you're going to have to get a visit from the tickle monster," you teased before tickling Amelia's stomach making her laugh loudly trying to wriggle from your grip.
"N-No! Stop!" She laughed loudly causing you to smile. Once you had stopped Amelia yawned loudly as she lazily rubbed her eyes, "Go to sleep honey, you're exhausted," you cooed. Amelia whined but then nodded defeatedly, closing her eyes before letting herself fall asleep, her head on your shoulder. Maria shook her head astounded at how easy it is for you to be able to get her daughter to try new foods and now being able to get her to calm down AND sleep? It was amazing and it sent Maria's heart into a desperate frenzy.
You smiled gently at the younger woman sat across from you as she stifled a yawn, "Long day?" You questioned. Maria smiled lazily at you before nodding slightly, rubbing her eyes just like her daughter did not even seconds before. Maria sighed gently leaning back before shivering slightly, "Yeah, we've been out since early this morning, she insisted on going Christmas shopping today to get something for her Auntie Nat," Maria stated. You nodded listening to her and couldn't help but notice her keep shivering every so often, "You're cold," you stated bluntly.
Maria tore her eyes from Amelia before looking into yours shaking her head slightly, "Uh no, it's okay, I'll be fine. It's nearly our stop anyway so don't worry about it," she explained. You shook your head slowly moving as to not wake Amelia, before taking your coat off passing it over to Maria, "Your daughter doesn't need you getting sick, it's fine, it's not like I'm never going to see you again."
Maria's heart fluttered at your words before slowly putting your coat on, inhaling the smell of your perfume, "Thank you," she gratified but you just sent her a smile in response sitting in comfortable silence. You passed Amelia back to Maria once you reached the stop before yours and stood up towering over Maria, leaning down to give her a friendly kiss on the cheek but her head turned at the movement, her lips connecting with yours.
The both of you stayed still for a moment, Maria was the first to break as she moved her plump lips against yours, for you then to do the same, before pulling away a deep blush rising to her cheeks. You coughed awkwardly as you stumbled over your feet trying to leave the bus, "B-Bye Maria!" She laughed gently watching you practically fall off of the bus, your cheeks bright red as you began the short walk home, mentally cursing yourself.
Maria leaned back in her seat, running her thumb across her bottom lip where the taste of your chapstick lingered. Maybe this was the start of something, something you and Maria both had high hopes for.

Maria groaned loudly as she rested her head on her desk, piles and piles of paperwork scattered around her new office, she had honestly been having one of the worst days in a long time. She rubbed her temples trying to ease the migraine that was forming, dark circles were printed under her eyes, exhaustion written in her features.
“I honestly can’t take this,” she muttered to herself as she grabbed her phone to ring Natasha. She chewed her nails as she awaited Natasha to answer and let out a gentle sigh once she did.
“Hi Tash,” Maria mumbled quietly as her bottom lip began to quiver. She inhaled sharply wiping her eyes as she let out a laugh mixed with a slight sob.
“Maria? What’s going on? Are you alright?” Natasha questioned panicked.
“No, not really,” Maria admitted sniffling. “I’m not having a very good day; I have countless emails, I’m up to my eyeballs in paperwork and I’ve missed lunch, and everything is going wrong,” Maria sobbed.
“I’ll be there with dinner in 20 minutes, keep your chin up,” Natasha spoke softly before hanging up the phone.
Maria hiccupped and pulled her knees up to her chest and rested her head on them sniffling. The sobs eventually subsided but Maria made no attempt to move from her current spot.
Her mind drifted back to you and the day on the bus. That was one of her best days in a while, she loved how much you showed care and affection towards her daughter, your hard exterior crumbling immediately once your attention was on her.
Amelia asked about you often, always wondering when the next time she could come to your office and play tea parties with you was, wondering if you were going to come to hers and Maria’s for dinner one night. Maria was especially shocked when Amelia questioned if you were allowed to pick her up from school and bring her back to her at work.
Maria couldn’t help but smile to herself when her mind flickered back to the kiss you both shared on the bus. Accidental or not, it made Maria feel warm inside and she was now even more desperate for your touch, the thought of you swam through her mind a majority of the time and she wasn’t ready to let that go.
Her head snapped up when she heard the handle of her office door jiggle and her shoulders dropped comfortably as she saw Natasha and Amelia come in. Maria smiled wide at the sight of her daughter and stood up lifting her into her arms.
“There’s my favourite monkey, hi baby,” Maria cooed as she kissed Amelia’s cheek and let her cuddle into her chest. She turned her attention to Natasha and saw the pizza that she had in her hands and gasped in appreciation.
“Nat, you’re actually the best,” she stated gratefully as she kissed the redhead’s cheek and shut her office door.
Natasha just smiled as she placed the pizza on the desk and got comfortable in the chair across from Maria as she ate her own food. Amelia stayed tucked into her mother’s chest as she nibbled on her pizza. Natasha watched Maria closely before she frowned gently.
“What’s going on Ria? You never get like this,” Natasha implied as she watched the brunette shuffle in her seat.
Maria sighed and ran her fingers through her hair, “It’s Y/N,” Maria admitted quietly. Amelia’s head perked up at the mention of your name, but Maria shushed her gently and got her to turn her focus back to her pizza.
“What’s she done to upset you now?” Natasha snarled slightly. Even though Maria had told Natasha about the kiss you shared on the bus, she still wasn’t happy with you or the situation. She felt like Maria deserved better than you, so until you showed otherwise, she didn’t like you.
“It’s more like what hasn’t she done, she’s been avoiding me since that day” Maria muttered sadly as she leant back in her chair. Maria was hoping that after what happened on the bus your walls would have lowered, you’d had maybe spent some time getting to know Maria, but she was wrong.
Instead of what Maria had hoped, it’s like you had built your walls even higher to keep her out. You had decided that the feelings that had surfaced were something that you didn’t want to deal with, so you locked them away and distanced yourself even more from Maria.
--
You walked into your building after leaving to grab yourself some lunch, you needed to have a breather away from the office, away from the woman who wouldn’t leave your mind. You had caught eyes with Maria earlier on that morning and immediately locked yourself in your office in hope of not having to speak to the younger brunette.
As you walked around the corner to the hallway where your office was you noticed a small figure shyly peering inside, not having the courage to go all the way in. You smiled excitedly at Amelia as you walked over but then frowned when you noticed she was crying.
“Bubs? What’s the matter?” You questioned gently as you knelt down to her height, ignoring the creases you were going to put in your expensive shoes and clothes. There was something about seeing Amelia so upset that made your heart feel heavy and you finally realised how much you missed the small girl’s presence, she brought this small but strong light into your life.
Amelia jumped at the sound of your voice and her head snapped around to face you. “Bubbles!” She cried loudly as she ran to you and sobbed into your shoulder, her small body uncontrollably shaking from her heavy cries.
You enveloped her in your arms and pressed a soft kiss to her head. “Hey, hey, it’s okay. What’s happened sweetheart?” You let her cry into your shoulder, and you comfortingly rubbed her back, her sobs slowly dying down into sniffles.
“I-I’ve lost bunny, I-I was exploring and now they’re gone,” She muttered sadly as she looked back at your office. “M-Mommy went to grab something with Aunty Natty so I went looking for you, can you help me?”
You smiled softly at the younger girl and stood up, gently taking her hand in yours. “Let’s go and find bunny, okay? I’m sure they’re here somewhere,” you reassured gently as Amelia led you to where she had been exploring.
As much as your ‘boss’ brain make you feel like you should have been annoyed that Maria had her daughter brought into the office, whilst she was still on shift, you didn’t mind. You regularly thought about the bus ride and how happy the both of them were to see you, but the comfortability you had with them had spooked you.
You wanted to let your walls down for Maria, but you didn’t want to be seen as weak, let people find something that they could use against you to get what they wanted. You felt little knocks into your leg as Amelia stayed as close as humanly possible to you whilst you strolled the hallways on the hunt for her bunny.
You checked several rooms and offices for the teddy and Amelia was beginning to get even more distressed than she was to begin with. Her bright blue eyes were constantly full of tears that threatened to fall, a thin layer of sweat covering her forehead because of how worked up she was, it broke your heart.
As you were about to leave the sixth office you had been in you heard a loud gasp followed by an excited squeal, “BUBBLES! IT’S BUNNY!” Amelia tugged impatiently on your pants leg and pointed to the top of a tall cabinet.
You were sure someone must have come across it and put it up there, there was no way that Amelia would have been able to get up there, especially not on her own. You smiled down at the younger girl who gripped your leg tightly before lifting her up into the air so she could grab the toy.
“Thank you bubbles! Bunny says thank you too,” Amelia gushed happily before she planted a big kiss on your cheek as you placed her back on the ground.
You felt warmth run through your body at the gesture and you smiled wide, if you had the chance, you’d give Amelia the world. “It’s fine sweetheart, let’s go back to my office, yeah?”
Amelia nodded quickly and took your hand and held bunny with you. You started the walk back to your office, Amelia’s feet scuffing across the floor not having the energy to pick them up properly and she yawned loudly.
“Tired bubba?” You chuckled gently. Amelia pouted exaggeratedly but nodded in agreement before doing grabby hands at you, staying cemented in her spot. “Do you want to come up?”
Amelia nodded as she rubbed her eyes slowly, “Yes please.”
You smiled and obeyed to the request, gently lifting her into your arms and letting her rest her head on your shoulder as she played with your hair that fell near her face. “I bet your mommy is going banana’s trying to find you,” you explained carefully making sure not to upset her.
Amelia shrugged slightly as she moved her head further into the crook of your neck. “It’s okay, I’m with bubbles so she won’t be mad, she likes seeing you,” she explained matter-of-factly.
You blushed at the thought of Maria being happy to see you, her wanting to speak to you, but that didn’t take you away from the fact that she was probably losing her mind at the fact she couldn’t find Amelia .“Hmm, I don’t know about that sweetheart. I feel like we’re gone end up face to face with a very stressed mommy.”
--
You weren’t wrong.
Maria rushed through another corridor, Natasha going down the opposite one as they both did their best to quickly find Amelia. The last thing Maria wanted was to get in trouble with you for Amelia, and Natasha, being here on a regular day.
She walked past your office and stopped; the last time Maria looked for Amelia she was making a mess in your office under your watchful, but loving, eyes. Maria slowly opened your office door and frowned seeing it empty, but then smiled a little seeing the painting Amelia had done was still proudly hung on your wall.
“Mommy!” Amelia cheered loudly as the two of you came around the corner in the hallway. Maria’s head snapped around, immediately removing herself away from your office as she cleared her throat slightly.
She looked at you nervously but then relaxed once you sent her a soft smile. Maria made sure to smile back, even more so when she saw Amelia comfortably tucked into your arms as you carried her through the hallway. Her heart fluttered at the sight of you both, there was nothing more attractive about you than the relationship you had with her daughter.
“Hi Maria, do come in” you spoke softly as you motioned to step into your office, Maria quickly followed and shut the door sending Natasha a quick text that she found Amelia and where to find your office.
You bounced Amelia in your arms starting to lull her to sleep, her head becoming heavy on your shoulder. “We’ve had a long afternoon, we’ve been non-stop searching for Bunny who went on an adventure of their own, haven’t we babygirl?” You teased as Amelia yawned once more but nodded.
“Miss Y/L/N, I’m really sorry. I know it’s just a regular day and Amelia shouldn’t be here, but I-I just had a really bad morning. Natasha brought Amelia to come see me when she came to give me lunch to try and cheer me up,” Maria sputtered nervously as she felt your eyes bore into her.
“Maria, it’s okay, I’m sorry that you’ve been feeling like that. Is there anything I can do to help you?” You offered sincerely; your eyes full of concern as you walked towards the younger woman.
Maria’s breath hitched as you got closer, and you smirked knowingly at her. Maria blinked slowly and watched you closely, “I-I uh no, I-I can manage,” she stuttered out as you nodded slightly, not believing her empty words.
You swayed slowly as you kept trying to lull Amelia to sleep, you resulted to gently tracing patterns on the bottom of her back with the hand that kept her secured in your arms, your free hand running through her hair humming softly.
You jumped slightly as you heard your office door get thrown open and you glared heavily at the redhead who had intruded. Your walls immediately built themselves back up. Your demeanour becoming protective and cold as usual now that you had a set of unfamiliar eyes upon you.
“Can I help you?” You spoke calmly as you watched the woman walk over to Maria, the jealousy you felt surged through your body as you watched her give her a kiss on the cheek. You looked away, slightly hurt about what you witnessed, before then turning to look back at the two women.
“I’m Natasha, Maria’s best friend and housemate,” she stated confidently, and you nodded, your body relaxing slightly knowing she was a close friend of Maria’s. You stuck your hand out for her to shake, which she did, slight shock evident on her face as she was ready to be rudely dismissed.
“I’m Y/N Y/L/N, Maria’s boss,” you stated just as confidently, making sure your body language was quite relaxed. “You must be the ‘Auntie Natty’ I’ve heard so much about.”
“That I am, and I’ve heard a lot about you too, Y/N,” she spoke lowly. You glanced at Maria who’s face flushed red, and you turned your attention back to Amelia who was mumbling incoherently into your shoulder.
You ran your fingers through her hair as you spoke nonsense with her, Maria took a deep breath and sent multiple loving looks your way as you focused on her daughter. Natasha raised her eyebrow at Maria before smirking to herself.
“Miss Y/L/N, if it’s okay I’d like to repay you for being such a good help and looking after Amelia. I-I was wondering about maybe taking you for coffee or something as a thank you? Only if that’s okay with you of course,” Maria pondered quietly.
You looked over at Maria and you raised an eyebrow slightly, “Maria, you don’t have to repay me for anything. Your daughter makes my boring, regular, day…interesting,” you admitted as you placed Amelia in the comfort of your desk chair and covered her with your blazer. “Besides, I thought I told you calling me Y/N was just fine.”
Natasha’s eyes widened once she noticed your defined muscles, the sleeves of your shirt rolled up comfortably. Maria gave Natasha a warning glare when a teasing look found itself into Natasha’s eyes, she understood Maria’s attraction to you much more now, especially alongside the fondness you have towards Amelia.
Maria let out a shaky breath before grabbing your hand, your head snapped towards her and looked at your hand in hers. You felt your body relax into her touch and you raised an eyebrow as she huffed slightly.
“Y/N, please, it’s just coffee,” she bargained, a determined look on her face, as you sighed softly.
Natasha watched the both of you closely and recognised you giving into Maria’s touch, and she smiled smugly. She understood how much Maria wanted this, wanted you, she could see that you were wanting the same, even if you refused to admit it.
“How about dinner, my treat?” You questioned as you rested against your desk looking at Maria. You smiled softly when she caught your gaze and then looked away at the sudden change of heart. Natasha made sure to give her a sharp elbow to the ribs when she decided Maria was taking too long to answer.
“D-Dinner is great, yeah, I uh, um,” she stammered rubbing her, now sore, ribs.
You chuckled gently as you looked at the ground and then back up at her. Maria smiled sheepishly as she caught your eyes once more, her sapphire ones locking with your Y/E/C ones.
“I’ll pick you up tonight, at 7:30, is that okay with you?” You planned as you wrote your number down on one of your post-it notes. Maria quickly nodded as she received the post-it note from your hand, her cheeks flushed a deep red.
“That’s perfect, I’ll see you later,” she agreed as you lifted Amelia from your chair and gently placed her in Maria’s arms before you pressed a short and sweet kiss to Amelia’s forehead.
“I love you bubbles,” she mumbled quietly, exhaustion evident in her voice.
You blinked quickly at her confession, but you smiled softly, your heart swelling. “I love you too, bubba,” you replied quietly as she nuzzled into Maria’s chest, almost falling asleep straight away. You heard a slight whimper come from Maria immediately being disguised as her clearing her throat.
Natasha watched as Maria looked at you with all the love and adoration in the world, after hearing that whimper from Maria at the cuteness of you and Amelia, she understood how smitten Maria was.
“Oh Maria, if you get a chance for them papers to be done, that’s great. Don’t rush to finish them though, I can easily extend the time,” you reassured as you sent her another smile before sitting back at your desk.
Maria nodded and left your office with Natasha, immediately being met with a quick slap to the back of her head. “What the fuck Nat?!” She whisper-shouted sending the redhead a sharp glare.
“You were practically drooling Maria. The both of you are so oblivious that it honestly gives me a headache, she didn’t see any of the loving gazes you gave her, but I most certainly did,” she revealed teasingly.
Maria rolled her eyes and walked with Nat to her car, gently placing Amelia in her car seat before giving Nat her attention once more. “Do you think this is a good idea? I need my best friends input,” she vouched nervously.
Natasha sent her a sad smile before gently squeezing Maria’s hands. “As much as I don’t like her right now, I can see that she’ll more than likely make up for being a bitch. I also see how good she is with Amelia, you can’t face that kind of love and affection, not as well as that anyway. I think you’re going to be just fine; however, I do expect you home tonight,” she spoke seriously.
Maria glared mockingly at her friend before saying her goodbyes and headed back up to her office. She paused at her door when she saw a majority of her paperwork had gone and there was a chocolate chip muffin and coffee placed neatly on her desk. She picked up the post-it note that was laid beside the coffee and smiled recognising your handwriting.
*I hope you like chocolate chip, take a breather – Y/N x*
Maria smiled to herself as she settled back at her desk to enjoy her muffin and you smiled slightly from outside of her office before walking back to your own.
You were going to make it up to Maria if it was the last thing you did.
--
The time for the date came around a lot quicker than Maria had anticipated and her nerves were beginning to kick in at full throttle. She had to ask Natasha to do her mascara because she had no hope of being able to get her hands to stop shaking.
“Take a deep breath Ria, everything is going to be fine. I bet Y/N is nervous too, you look beautiful by the way,” Natasha complimented as she put the last of the makeup away. Natasha frowned when she didn’t receive a response and knelt in front of Maria and held her hands. “What’s going on?” Natasha questioned carefully, making sure that she didn’t push a limit.
“W-What if I screw up? She could easily have decided all of this was just a massive mistake and I get my heart crushed into a million little pieces and then I have to tell Amelia why she won’t see her again and I just-ugh,” Maria rambled nervously as she put her head in her hands.
“Maria, she’d be stupid to feel like that, you honestly need to give yourself more credit,” the redhead scolded as she pulled Maria up into a hug. Nat rested her chin on Maria’s shoulder and rubbed her back reassuringly as she complimented her nervous friend once more, “She’s going to be speechless at how amazing you look, now give yourself a minute to relax because she should be here soon.”
Maria nodded as the two left her bedroom to sit in the front room, and then downed a glass of wine for a confidence boost. Natasha raised her eyebrow, but Maria just sent her a sheepish smile. Natasha shook her head and chuckled to herself, doing the same action Maria did just seconds prior, giving Maria a bit more reassurance as she bounced her leg nervously.
Both women turned their heads to the door once they heard the sound of a car door being closed. You looked at the address on your phone and then towards the number that was plastered on the front door of the house. You were in the right place, there was no turning back now.
You sauntered up the steps towards Maria’s door, a bouquet of flowers held tightly as you knocked loud enough to be heard. Your heart was beating out of your chest but luckily, due to the fact you have your own company, you had been able to teach yourself how to seem calm and collected even in the most nerve-wracking situations.
You jumped slightly once you heard the door open to reveal Maria. Your eyes fixed onto her own before you gave a soft smile and took in her appearance. The red dress hugged her figure perfectly, her slender legs being highlighted with black heels. She looked beautiful and your brain didn’t know how to cope with it.
“Wow,” you breathed shakily as you moved your eyes back up to Maria’s, “You look beautiful Maria.” You grinned proudly when her face flushed red, you cleared your throat before passing her the bouquet of flowers that were held in your iron-grip. “I hope they’re okay, I wasn’t too sure which flowers you’d like,” you admitted.
“They’re beautiful, thank you,” Maria blushed as she stood aside, “Would you like to come in?”
You nodded and stepped into the house after wiping your shoes on the mat. You smiled seeing multiple pictures of Maria, Nat and Amelia which were proudly plastered across the living room and, from what you could see, into the hallway.
“Your home is lovely, Maria,” you complimented truthfully as you kept analysing your surroundings. Her home was very different to yours, Maria’s looked lived in, it didn’t look like it was straight out of a catalogue, it was very homey. You watched Maria closely as she placed the flowers in a vase and then turned her attention back to you.
“Are you ready to go?” She inquired; excitement was clear in her tone which made you smile more. Maria grabbed her bag and jacket whilst you nodded, sending Natasha a friendly smile. The redhead just started at you and gave you a small glare, that you took as a warning, before she hugged Maria and told her to have fun.
You guided Maria to your car and opened the door for her, “Your chariot awaits,” you teased as you lent her a helping hand to assist her into the car.
Maria giggled cutely at your antics, making your heart skip a beat, she already had you wrapped around her little finger. You perched yourself in the driver’s seat before taking off down the quiet back roads, nobody else to be seen but your car.
Maria glanced outside and then looked towards you, “You’re not kidnapping me to murder me and leave me in a ditch somewhere, are you?” She joked light heartedly, breaking the silence that had filled the car.
You couldn’t help the smile that spread across your face before you shook your head. “No, why would I do that to a beautiful woman like yourself?” You flirted easily as you shifted gears once more, the car noticeably speeding up.
Even in the darkness, you could see the blush that made itself known on Maria’s cheek sand your eyes darted to her and then back onto the road. Maria shivered slightly and you reached for the heating, Maria doing the same making your hands brush against each other.
“Sorry,” Maria muttered shyly as she placed her hands back into the comfort of her lap.
“Don’t be, come here,” you insisted as you put your hand back out for Maria. You gave her a reassuring smile before looking back at the road, “I won’t bite unless you ask me to,” you joked, smiling proudly when a laugh erupted from Maria.
“Okay, okay, I believe you.”
You smiled at the brunette once more as she placed her hand in yours, you not hesitating to entwine your fingers together before placing a gently kiss to the back of her hand. Maria smiled even more at the gesture and relaxed further into her seat, she loved how carefree you were with her in this moment. It wasn’t very often that Maria would see you when you hadn’t got your work brain on, she had never really seen you let loose in the years she had known you.
“Okay then, where are you taking me?” Maria enquired as she ran her thumb over yours.
“I am taking you to one of the best bars I have ever been to,” you smiled excitedly as you squeezed Maria’s hand gently before letting go so that you can change gears. Maria pouted at the loss of contact and immediately took your hand back in hers once she knew you were able to.
“I hope you’re not trying to get me drunk,” she jested as she looked up at you, taking in your side profile and being proud of how relaxed and collected you seemed with her.
“I am smart enough to know that I won’t be taking you home drunk. Your roommate gave me a warning look earlier, she is a relatively intimidating woman,” you admitted as you remembered the ferocity that laced the redhead’s jade eyes.
“I-I’m sorry,” Maria stuttered as her grip on your hand faltered now feeling nervous at the fact that Natasha made it so obvious that she wasn’t impressed with you. “Natasha is just really protective over me; she never thinks anybody is good enough for me. I’ve had some horrific relationships and she just wants to make sure my heart doesn’t get broken again.”
“Don’t be sorry, she has every right to be weary of me. I can only assume that you had told her about that morning which I had really upset you?” You enquired cautiously, trying to make sure you don’t make her uncomfortable or cross a line.
Maria’s body stiffened at the accusation, and she went to move her hand away as her body flushed with embarrassment and…shame? But you made it obvious that you weren’t upset as you gripped her hand a little tighter to get her to stay. Maria bit the inside of her cheek and blinked furiously to keep the tears at bay.
“You had every right to tell her, Maria. You have every right to be upset with me and Natasha has every right to want to punch me several times in the face,” you chuckled slightly in a hope to bring the mood up. You smiled once you got a small laugh from Maria.
“I do want to talk to you about that though, it’s one of the reasons I asked you out for dinner instead of you taking me for coffee. I want to have a chance to right my wrongs, make up for what happened that morning. I neverwanted to scare you or upset you like I did, that was far from my intentions, and I am so so sorry Maria,” you apologised sincerely as you pulled the car over in the empty road and turned to face her giving her your full attention.
Maria inhaled sharply and gripped your hands tighter, your knuckles bleeding white at the pressure, but you didn’t mind. You watched her closely but stayed quiet so you could give her the time she needed to come to terms with your apology and decide whether she wanted to accept it, you were ready for the rejection and you wouldn’t blame her if she did.
“Can I ask you something?” Maria asked, her voice barely above a whisper as her eyes met yours.
You immediately nodded, “Anything.”
“What made you so cold?”
Your mouth parted slightly in shock at the question, and you brought your bottom lip in between your teeth as you thought about the best way to give an answer. Maria frowned at your current state and took both of your hands in her own, “I’m not here to judge you Y/N.”
“I um, it’s complicated,” you muttered quietly as various thoughts swamped your, once clear, head. Maria nodded but stayed quiet giving you the same time that you gave her just moments before. “I was married, my life was perfect, I had everything I could ever want. My wife, she uh, she started acting distant not long after we had gotten married, started working late and I became used to going to sleep and then waking up in an empty bed. I confronted her about it and that’s when the arguments started and they were vicious, horrible words got said, items got thrown. There were times it had gotten physical on her part, but I never let myself spiral that far, I refused to resort to violence. At one point I felt as though everything I got was deserved, so I just let it happen. I’m pretty sure we had the police around the house several times because someone had called about a domestic disturbance. It was all just so toxic, and I was so tired.”
Maria frowned gently as you spoke, all she wanted to do was hold you, ensure you that you were going to be okay and that she would never hurt you, but she didn’t interrupt. It didn’t take long for her to put two and two together, the way you projected yourself to others was a self-defence mechanism from past trauma. You took a shaky breath as you pulled one of your hands away from Maria to run your fingers through your hair.
“I ended up being told she was cheating on me. The woman who it was with had the audacity to come to my office and pretty much rub it in my face. She showed me it was my credit card that bought her things, showed me pictures of my wife in bed with her or on holiday when I thought she was on a work trip. It was humiliating, so I closed myself off. I became cold and distant with everybody and only focused on my work, my job. I didn’t want anyone to get the chance to hurt me or use me ever again. That’s why I was always such a bitch to everybody, so people were too scared to even try and cross me.”
You sighed once you had finished your rant and you let go of Maria’s hands, frowning. Now that you opened up about everything, you realised how horrible you actually were to the people around you, the staff you should be grateful for. You teared up slightly, “God, Maria- Maria I’m so sorry, for everything.”
Maria smiled sadly at you and brought her hand up to your cheek, you tensed at first but once your eyes locked onto Maria’s you melted into her touch. Maria placed a finger on your lips when you went to speak, “Shh, don’t say anything, just trust me.” Her voice laced with adoration and care, something you hadn’t heard for a long time, and it made your heart set alight.
Maria exhaled nervously and then smiled, “I’m not usually one to do this on a first date, but there’s a first time for everything.”
You tilted your head in confusion, “Maria, what are you talking abou-”
You’re cut off by Maria’s lips attaching themselves to yours and you can’t stop the slight groan that leaves your mouth as you felt the plumpness of her lips against your own. She moved her hands, one to cup your cheek and the other to pull you in closer from the back of your neck. You reciprocated the action and moved both of your hands to cup her face as you deepened the kiss, fireworks igniting in your chest. The both of you have waited for this for a long time and none of you are ready to give up just yet. Reluctantly you pulled away once oxygen became an issue and looked at Maria, both of your chests heaving as you tried your best to regulate your breathing.
“That was just,” you laughed slightly, and Maria looked at you nervously before you continued, “Wow, that was just wow.” You smiled softly at Maria; your hands still comfortably placed on her cheeks as you pressed another chaste kiss against her lips.
Maria smiled against your lips before you pulled away to start the car once more, “I agree, I’ve been waiting to do that for so long. It was even better than I expected.”
You cocked an eyebrow as you carried on the drive to the bar and spoke to Maria in a teasing manner, “Did you seriously doubt my kissing skills Miss Hill?”
“Of course not, sweetheart. I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about,” she spoke as she feigned her innocence, very well you might add. Maria slipped her hand back into yours and rested back comfortably in her seat.
You smiled broadly at her words as you pulled up at the bar, gently squeezing Maria’s hand before letting go. Once you had left the car you opened Maria’s door for her and guided her inside of the bar, your arm secured comfortably around her shoulders, mimicking her arm that was wrapped around your waist.
“Now Maria, I hope you’re ready for fun Y/N, because it’s been a while since I’ve let loose.”
“I am so ready.”
--
You and Maria had been at the bar for a couple of hours now, you had eaten an unhealthy amount of food, but it made you smile that Maria was comfortable enough to just be herself, even after everything that had happened between you both. You had both taken it in turns to reminisce about different memories, give each of you an insight into each other’s lives, you were both happy and comfortable.
Maria spluttered loudly from laughing so hard and threw her head back as tears threatened to fall from her eyes, “No way, I don’t believe you!”
You shake your head smiling as you finished your only bottle of water, making sure not to drink so you could drive home. “I’m being serious, me and my friends did so much stupid shit when we were teenagers. I wanted to be the first of us to be able to break into the rival school’s building and steal their mascot trophy. It was going fine until my friend hit me with my own car, god, that hurt like a bitch.”
Maria laughed loudly again and wiped her eyes smiling, “Wow, who knew that you were such a troublemaker? You were quite the rebel, a very different crowd to my goody two-shoes self.”
You smiled at Maria, your hand comfortably rested on the top of your bottle and your chin placed on top of your hand. Maria’s laughter died down and she smiled gently at you, tilting her head slightly as you kept your unrelenting stare focused on her.
“What?” She asked as she tried to keep a straight face, but you could see right through her and recognised the small smile that had etched its way onto her lips. “Do I have something on my face?”
You shook your head, “No, I just think that you’re breathtaking, I love looking at you, your beauty never fails to amaze me,” you admitted confidently, smirking to yourself as you saw the blush that crept up Maria’s neck and to her cheeks.
“You weirdo,” she joked as she playfully slapped your arm before she leant into your side and rested her head on your shoulder. You hesitated but then followed through on your thoughts and kissed the top of her head as you held her hand.
“Come dance with me,” you instructed smiling as you moved from beside Maria and stood up. You offered her your hand and pulled her up from her seat and laughed as she stumbled into you. “Easy tiger, I get I’m irresistible, but you don’t have to throw yourself at me,” you winked as a cocky smirk formed on your lips.
“Wow, you’re so funny, no wonder I’m so head over heels for you,” Maria teased as she comfortably draped her arms around your neck, the two of you swaying to the music as you pulled her in closer by her hips.
“You’re head over heels for me?”
Maria gulped slightly, the sudden realisation of her confession hitting her square in the chest. She glanced up at you through her long eyelashes, her bottom lip tucked between her teeth, and you smiled down at her.
“Yes, I am. I think I always have been,” she confessed shyly.
“Well, it’s a good thing that I am too,” you muttered quietly as you pressed your lips against hers, warmth flowing through your body as her arms tightened around you and pulled you closer. You smiled against Maria’s lips before pulling away and resting your foreheads together.
“It’s late,” Maria observed as she looked at the dingy clock that stood out on the bar’s colourful wall. She rested her head back on your shoulder and smiled more when she felt you release a deep breath, “You’re safe to be yourself with me Y/N.”
“I know, thank you. Let’s head off home, yeah?”
Maria nodded in agreement and waited comfortably by the door as you paid for your tab before walking to the car hand in hand. You laughed as you spun Maria playfully, then hugged her from behind and kissed her cheek. To anybody who was watching you, you both looked like two lovestruck teenagers on their first ever date. You smiled once more as you opened the door for her, receiving a kiss on the cheek in reply as she stepped into the car.
You held her hand the whole drive home, both of you singing along to the radio and reminiscing about different memories as a way to pass the time. You hadn’t felt some happy and comfortable in somebody’s presence in a long time. Maria was your person, the person who was going to make your walls crumble as if they were made of sand.
You had learnt a lot about her throughout the night, even if she did find it hard to speak about her ex, who was also Amelia’s father. It was then that you vowed that you would never hurt her or Amelia, and you would always be their protector.
“Here you go, milady,” you laughed as you opened her door once you had reached her house.
“Why thank you, my charming knight,” she mimicked playfully as you walked up the steps to her front door. Maria took a deep breath and turned to you giving you a sad smile, “Is it pathetic of me to say that I don’t want you to go? That I don’t want this night to end?”
You smiled tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear before speaking softly, “No, I don’t think it’s pathetic. I feel the same way, I’ll give you all the time in the world Maria, I mean it.”
Maria smiled at the reassurance standing on her tiptoes to cup your face gently, the pads of her thumbs smoothing over the skin on your cheeks. You submitted into her touch before kissing both of her palms.
“I should go,” you whispered reluctantly as you looked down at Maria. You pressed another chaste kiss to her lips before doing the same to her forehead, bracing yourself to walk back towards your car.
You stumbled when you felt Maria tug on your hand and pull you back towards her and her hand found their way back to your face once more. “Stay, please,” she whispered as she looked at you pleadingly.
“Am I going to get murdered in my sleep by your flatmate? If so, I’d rather not because I really want McDonald’s pancakes for breakfast tomorrow,” you teased as you pulled Maria flush against your chest.
“No, she won’t. You might get harassed by Amelia in the morning though,” she explained with a soft smile on her face as she brushed your hair out of your eyes.
“I can live with that.”
Maria smiled as she unlocked the front door and quietly tiptoed inside and upstairs to Maria’s room. You walked in discarding of your coat and laid it neatly over the back of her desk chair. Your eyes darted around the room, and you fixed your gaze onto a photo of Amelia in front of a Christmas tree that was placed in the middle of her desk.
“That was Christmas 2 years ago,” Maria informed as she came to stand beside you as she lifted the photo from her desk bringing it closer to you both. You glanced at Maria who pursed her lips tightly and quickly wiped a stray tear. “That was our first Christmas living here with Nat after my own divorce, Nat went full out to make it the best Christmas that Amelia had ever had, even if she was only 2 at the time.”
“Natasha sounds like an amazing friend and an even better auntie,” you smiled. Maria nodded at your words, and you frowned softly and wrapped your arms around Maria and pressed a kiss to the top of her head, “I think it’s time for you to get some rest.”
Maria pouted but then yawned loudly, quickly covering her mouth as her cheeks flushed red for what must have been the hundredth time tonight. You chuckled as she playfully slapped your chest before walking over to her closet to grab some form of sleepwear for you both. You smiled gratefully at her as she passed you some shorts and t-shirt.
“The uh, the bathroom is just there,” she smiled as she pointed to the ensuite that was attached to her room.
You nodded and went to get changed, coming out in the pair of shorts but without the t-shirt and just had your bralette on show. “I uh, I sleep more comfortably like this, is that okay? I’ll put the shirt on if not,” you reassured quickly.
Maria’s eyes trailed over your body and kept flicking back to the dagger tattoo in between your breasts before you cleared your throat slightly to grab her attention, “You’re drooling, Hill.”
“S-Sorry, you can sleep without a shirt if you want.”
You smiled at the younger woman who looked even smaller than usual in an oversized shirt and a pair of shorts. Maria’s breath hitched when you walked over pressing a chaste kiss to her lips before you grabbed the thin blanket off the bed and laid it on the floor.
“What are you doing?” She asked inquisitively as she watched you place a pillow on the floor.
You tilted your head in confusion and continued to prepare your makeshift bed on the floor. “I’m making my bed?”
“Oh,” Maria said deflated as she sat on the far side of her bed. She frowned to herself as she rubbed her arm in an effort to comfort herself. “Goodnight then, I guess?”
You watched as Maria shuffled under her covers and got comfortable. You knelt up and looked at her frowning, “You’re upset, what’s the matter?”
She glanced at you and then quickly looked away. “I just thought that maybe you’d want to stay in my bed, with me. It’s okay that you don’t though, I mean it’s only our first date and I’ve probably pushed limits already, but I just thou-”
You cut Maria off with a gentle peck to her lips and gave her a small smile. “I didn’t want to just assume, and I didn’t want to push any boundaries, I refuse to fuck up what I have with you. I want us to work. Do you want me to stay with you?”
Maria nodded shyly and you didn’t waste any time grabbing your pillow from the floor and placing it back onto the bed before you climbed in next to her, sitting slightly upright as you weren’t ready to sleep just yet. Maria shuffled closer to you and rested her head on your chest and draped her arm across your waist.
“You’re warm, it’s like I have my own personal heater,” she smiled looking up at you. Maria pressed a gentle kiss on your jaw, lingering for just a second, and cuddled further into you, yawning once more.
“I’ll be whatever you want me to be sweetheart,” you assured quietly as you wrapped one arm around her and used your other arm to run your fingers through her hair. Maria closed her eyes, her breathing going into a steady rhythm, and you gave her a lazy grin.
“Goodnight, Y/N,” Maria whispered quietly as she let sleep overcome her, feeling safe and comfortable in your arms.
“Goodnight, Maria,” you replied gently as you kept running your fingers through her hair and helped lull her to sleep.
You stayed awake for about another hour as thoughts of what you and Maria could be swarmed your mind. You understood the responsibilities that would come in being Maria’s partner, but you were ready. You were ready to prove yourself and you were finally ready to love again.
“It’s been exactly 10 minutes since you woke up,so why have I not had my good morning kiss yet?”

It wasn’t often you and your girlfriend got the chance to sleep in late at the Avenger’s compound, but considering the two of you had both recently only just come back from a month-long mission the rest of the team decided to cut the two of you some slack. You stirred slightly, slowly waking from your slumber, and your body relaxed when you felt your girlfriend’s nails gently scratch the bottom of your back.
“Are you ready to wake up now, sleepyhead?”
You grunted in response and turned onto your side, moving your head to rest it in her lap once she moved her book out of the way. Maria smiled down at you, gently brushing your baby hairs from out of your face, and leant down to press a kiss on your temple.
“Stop being so grumpy, it’s 11:30 am, considering we were used to waking up at 5:30 am you should be as fresh as a daisy,” Maria teased as she pressed yet another kiss to your face and you hummed in appreciation.
“I suppose so,” you yawned, nestling your head back into her side, and then closed your eyes once more as you basked in the warmth radiating from your girlfriend. These were the mornings that you didn’t see much of, but they were always your favourite. “What are you reading?”
Maria’s cheeks flushed red and you raised your eyebrow at her sudden shyness.
“It’s uh, it’s called ‘Tangled Vows’ by Anna Stone. It’s a really good read,” Maria muttered shyly and you nodded in acknowledgement before you then quickly grabbed her book, and bolted out of bed to read the blurb on the back.
“Y/N, no!”
You gasped loudly once you finished the blurb and whipped your head round to look at your heavily flustered girlfriend. She whined loudly and hid under the covers as you giggled to yourself.
“Maria Hill! This is lesbian erotica, you naughty girl,” you teased, going back to sitting with her on the bed, and tugged the covers away from her so you could look at her properly. “I never thought Agent Hill would be into reading lesbian erotica, kinky. Is this where you got your new, and sexy, ideas from and brought them to the bedroom?”
“Stoppppp, I’m already embarrassed. Quit your teasing,” Maria whined, an adorable pout on her lips, and you smiled as you stayed straddling her hips, flicking through the pages of the book.
“Also, Y/N/N, It’s been exactly 10 minutes since you woke up. So why have I not had my good morning kiss yet?”
You shrugged innocently, but a giddy smile crossed your features as you leant down and pressed your lips onto Maria’s. Maria hummed pleasurably, moving her hand up your back to the back of your head to deepen the kiss, gasping softly when you rock your hips testingly and bite her bottom lip.
“Why don’t you show me just how naughty that book is, hm?”
