before project freelancer, nuevo was a mediator for the UNSC meant to be able to foster connections with aliens that weren't immediately bent on fighting them. they worked on peace treaties, agreements and surrenders and everything else that required communication with the lifeforms they came across. and as such, they developed a pretty innate knowledge of alien languages - of course basic sangheili became the one they were most familiar with and could communicate in without any need for translator help, but they learn fast and managed to pick up on less common ones quite easily with only a little help. especially if the species they were interacting with were willing to help them, it was mostly a breeze
so in being moved to project freelancer, this skill was considered. while freelancer rarely came into less violent contact with aliens, training exercises specific to nuevo were often administered that required quicktime translation of alien speech via their helmet - these exercises were sent at random, and were meant to keep them on their toes and flex their language skills on the fly
most transmissions were random. seemingly unrelated clips or text lines of languages other than the covenant lingua franca - kig-yar, unggoy, trade pidgin. but there was one that always seemed like its speech was relevant, always seemed to really mean something when it was brought to their table, something that sat on their visor almost ominously every time it showed up, a moment or two to prepare before they let it play
huragok. chirps of AI and directives and questions of what it should do now, every single time
it wouldn't be until the crash, the release of knowledge, our mother of invention dying in the snow, that they would understand why. digital blood on armored hands, a player told it was only a game
