mulder's  insistence  on  making  everything  a  joke  was  simultaneously  one  of  his  best  and  worst  features. it  was  easy,  at  times,  to  ignore  everything  going  on  in  favor  of  some  stupid  joke  she  could  get  upset  at. easier,  it  was,  to  change  the  subject  away  from  one  of  the  horrific  incidents  that  had  occurred  in  their  lives. (  at  this  point,  the  list  was  plentiful  ). 

 but  sometimes,  scully  doesn't  want  that. wants  to  be  able  to  have  an  open  and  honest  conversation. it's  rare,  because  it's  always  been  so  much  easier  not  to  talk  about  it. but...

mulder  lost  any  semblance  of  his  childhood  after  samantha  had  been  taken. samantha,  who  had  been  the  most  important  person  in  his  life. samantha,  who  had  helped  him  choose  his  name  and  who  had  been  under  his  protection  that  night. it  had  been  his  job  to  watch  her  while  their  parents  were  out. she  knew  it  still  plagued  him,  a  pressure  that  sat  on  his  chest,  heavy  and  constant. something  that,  even  if  he  did  have  it answered,  he  would  mourn.  because  the  time  with  samantha,  time  that  he  had  lost,  would  be  worth  everything  and  anything  on  earth. 

these  were  facts  scully  has  known  for  almost  as  long  as  she  knew  the  man  in  front  of  her  now. his  pursuit  of  the  x-files,  to  finally  prove  his  beliefs,  was  for  samantha. it  had  all  been. ❝  mulder,  whatever's  going  on,  you  need  to  talk  to  me. ❞  she'd  seen  him  distraught  before,  their  work  frequently  invoked  an  emotional  response  due  to  how  personal  it  could  be. something  must  have  gotten  to  him.
