5 TIPS ON HOW TO LOOK BETTER IN A SUIT
5 TIPS ON HOW TO LOOK BETTER IN A SUIT
Like every good man, I strive for perfection, and, like every ordinary man, I have found that perfection is out of reach – but not the perfect suit – Edward Tivnan
Some of you that may have read my article on 25 Suit Rules All Men Need To Know might be thinking – how is this article titled “5 Tips On How To Look Better in Your Suit” different from that one. But believe me this is different and…

There is only one rule when it comes to matching your tie to your pocket square, and this is that they shouldn’t exactly match. A pocket square or pocket handkerchief like some others would call it, is a very important part of every gentleman’s wardrobe, but sadly is one that is overlooked by many. Of course we all know that if you are wearing a tie, it is not compulsory to wear a pocket square, but it makes a nice touch if you incorporate it in your outfit.
I love pocket squares and I want to inspire other men to love it as well. This would be the third article [within a space of 1 month] that I’m writing on this all important accessory. The first one was THE KOBI KOACHMAN Guide to Pocket Squares | 7 EASY WAYS TO FOLD A POCKET SQUARE, the second one was on KOBI KOACHMAN GUIDE | 25 Suit Rules All Men Need to Know where I kind of mentioned it in the 23rd Suit rule which says
#Rule 23: Avoid matching pocket squares with your tie either in pattern or fabric choice, instead find colors that complement the outfit.
For many guys, hearing this puts them in a difficult situation, as choosing to be exactly matched is always the easiest and the safest way out. But then again, you’ve heard it, it’s so WRONG!
Being all matched with ties and pocket squares cut from same cloth is not something that looks well, it simply goes to show that you love doing things in a simplistic way, which is boring. I know you might say: there’s nothing wrong with being simple, but simplicity without elegance denotes laziness and when repeated consistently, it is guaranteed to make one look like he lacks taste. A stylish man would never wear exactly matching accessories. As a Stylish gentleman, you have to go the extra mile with a little color coordination, pushing new limits with style and fashion.
Fashion brands do not make it easy for a lot of men. These days you see so many brands offering matching tie and pocket square sets to their customers in combo packs. A lot of men are always excited when they walk into a fashion store and see the matching set – they are like “What a relief! the “burden” of thinking how best to match their ties and pocket squares have been lifted off their shoulder” So for those that buy these matching sets my suggestion would be to not match them together in an outfit, but rather pick either the pocket square or tie from the combo pack set and match it with another tie or pocket square that would go well with it. Take a look at the color wheel below.
A little course on Colour Analysis could help you especially if you are not naturally gifted when it comes to combining colors exceptionally well in your outfit. But today, I’m going to give you some ideas for matching ties with pocket squares. So get ready to mix things up. Of course not just any colors will look good together, but don’t worry this guide will help you choose the right pocket square for any tie you own or you will buy in the near future.
So, whether you want to wear a tie and a pocket square, whether it’s for a formal event or in a casual setting, here are the elements you should consider – COLORS, PATTERNS & PRINTS and FABRIC:
1. COLORS
Just because your tie should not match your pocket square, doesn’t mean that they should be picked at random. There are a lot of color schemes you can use to establish which colors go together well.
A) You can opt for complementary colors, such as red and green; blue and orange; yellow and purple for a contrasting effect
A combination of complementary colors involves choosing two colors that are found on exact opposite sides of the color wheel. These colors are highly contrasting and look very bold if put together.
B) You can opt for analog colors such as green and blue; blue and violet; or yellow and orange for a more subtle look!
Analog colors basically means that you will be choosing one color from the spectrum, skip one and then choose the next one. These combinations are very simple yet highly elegant.
C) A neutral tie goes very well with a colorful pocket square and vice versa. If one of the two accessories (tie or pocket square) is a neutral color (white, khaki, gray, beige, black etc.), the other one can be any color you want it to be. Neutrals go with any color.
D) You could also match your pocket square to your shirt, especially if you are wearing a white shirt. A white shirt goes well with a white pocket square, especially if the jacket is black or navy. In this case, the tie can be of any color and style.
2. PATTERNS & PRINTS
There are three options when it comes to matching your tie to your pocket square should you decide to wear a pattern or a print.
A) The tie is a solid color while the pocket square has a pattern or a print. In this case, one of colors of the pocket square can be the color of the tie, but this is not compulsory. For a more subtle look, you can combine it in such a way that the color that reoccurs is in different shades on the pocket square.
B) The tie and pocket square both have patterns or prints. The rule to matching patterns is that they should NEVER be of same size. If both accessories have patterns or prints and you want to mix them ensure that the patterns on both are not of same size. So for example, if your tie has thin stripes, you can combine it with a pocket square with thick stripes (it could be the same pattern but in a different size). A tie with thin stripes can also be mixed with a pocket square with large dots. If the stripes on the tie were thick, you should have matched them to small dots.
C) The tie has a pattern and the pocket square is in a solid color. In this case, there is not much to say, the same rules from point A apply. The two should not match, but they should go together well and complement each other.
3. FABRICS
When it comes to fabrics, you should follow this similar rule.
The fabric of the pocket square should also be different from the fabrics of the jacket and tie. Of course, the tie and the jacket would not necessarily be made from the same fabric, but the pocket square can really be something else. Since most suits are made from wool, a nice pocket square can be made from silk. Silk and wool go great together. If your suit is made from a rather fine material, you can add a rougher pocket square, maybe even something with a texture.
LOOK BOOK INSPIRATION
FINAL THOUGHT
You could decide how you wish to match your tie to your pocket square so as long as you don’t match exactly. But I think that if you follow these guidelines, you will always look great, no matter your taste or whatever style you adopt.
My advice is that you should always have confidence in yourself and try different combinations to see which one works best.

A man can’t be called a gentleman if he doesn’t know how to wear his suit
Last week I got a job to make 2 suits for a new client. The guy in question had never owned a suit before, this was going to be his first.
As always, I try to understand what kind of job my client needs then I tailor my pitch to their job while suggesting my ideas on the design as well as other details which I think would…

Fashion accessory is an item used to contribute, in a secondary manner, to the wearer’s clothing, often used to complete an outfit and chosen to specifically complement the wearer’s look. Last week I posted an article on – FRIDAY STYLE INSPIRATIONS PART 5 | FASHION ACCESSORIES FOR MEN (BRACELETS) and I promised I was going to talk about Men’s Essential Accessories in detail this week…So here I am fulfilling my promise.
There is no better way to redefine your style than by picking up some key accessories that will accentuate your overall look. The truth is, accessories separate the real men from the rest. After one must have invested in building his wardrobe, filled it up with clothing, next a man also need to invest in accessories because it is essential in complementing the outfit.
I am however, not oblivious to the fact that some guys don’t care about accessories no matter how much you try to convince them. In the course of my Fashion Styling business, I’ve worked with some male clients who rejected the accessory list which I came up with as part of my style suggestions during wardrobe consultation. When I tried to find out why, here are some of the most common excuses I get.
“Sorry Kobi, I just hate wearing wrist watch”, or “I don’t use wallet”, or “Bracelets irritates my skin”, or “Fashion rings are for ladies, not for men”, or “My wife won’t approve of my wearing any other ring other than my gold wedding band” or “I don’t like Pocket Squares, I feel it’s overdressing” ….uhm…let me remember this particular weird line I once heard…oh yeah…here it is “Wearing sunglasses makes my eye balls go in?”…Oh really..so an eye wear that accentuates your look at same time providing you protection against the sun rays – somehow does an extra job of shifting your eye ball down your eye socket, right?? Wow, amazing!
And to the man who says his wife won’t allow him wear a gold wedding band, I think you should introduce her to black and silver wedding bands – tungsten and gold types. They are my personal favorite – stylish, modern and classy. I believe she would love it.
But I understand, there are some men who just like to keep things simple. If you are one of them, chances are you have something to gain from at least one accessory that will be genuinely useful. See pix below and see if you don’t have at least one (1) out of the seven (7) different accessories below.
There are various types of accessories which are all essential – because they all make you a better man, however when shopping on a budget or when trying to upgrade your wardrobe, people usually want to know the basic accessories they could start off with.
So here are the Top 10 accessories a gentleman must have in his wardrobe, you could consider this as the minimum basic requirements for men. ENJOY.
TOP 10 ACCESSORIES EVERY GENTLEMAN MUST HAVE IN HIS WARDROBE
1. Watch
For many men, this is the only hand accessory which they can invest in and it really helps making it an exceptional timepiece. It’s better having one pretty nice piece than several grungy timepieces. It looks really bad when you have a man in great outfit only to be sabotaged by a bad looking watch.
2. Belt
A high quality leather belt, just like an extra ordinary pair of shoes can last you for a pretty long period of time. Black and chocolate brown are among the colors that can make huge difference for those who want to stand out in the crowd. These colors are fantastic because they can easily match well with all your shoes and suit.
3. Wallet
Many men go for years without obtaining a replacement of their wallets or cleaning it out. A wallet stores your identification documents and the money which you work so hard to get and you can easily find high quality wallets at affordable rates.
4. Sunglasses
Other than providing you protection against the suns rays, sunglasses also add a touch of style. There are many styles that are available and one of the best is the aviator frames. It’s good not to use sports sunglasses with formal wear.
5. Socks
When you’ve put time and attention into every other element of your look, slipping on a pair of dirty, worn-out or gnarly socks is a big Fashion SIN that’s sure to get noticed. Believe me, there’s a good chance your colleagues and date will see your socks, so why not draw their attention to a worthy pair?
6. Ties and Tie Clips
Behind every great tie is a greater man. There are a couple of things one should know about ties. The greater the number of ties that a man has the better. But be careful of how to choose your tie as it is important to avoid cheap ties because they will just look cheap even if you pair it with expensive shirt and suit. Buy the kind of a tie that you can afford, but you need not settle for an awful material. Navy blue tie that’s made of silk material is the best of all.
7. Cuff Links
Every guy needs a great pair of cuff links. They’re a timeless staple and can dress up any shirt. Cufflinks offer professional look and people know you mean business when you are wearing them. While you can change them up depending on your mood and how much personality you want to display, a sleek pair will always look stylish and professional, and channel your inner Don Draper.
8. Pocket Square
Pocket Square is one classic and timeless accessory which every man needs to have. It’s one of the few menswear essentials which can have a great impact on the entire look if used correctly. It can be worn dressy to finish off a polished suit look or to add interest to your blazer. Also, pocket square is a great way to accessorize casual pair of denim, or a jacket with no tie. It’s very easy to incorporate into your style whether you are going for a corporate look, a business casual look or a native wear look.
9. Messenger Bags
These are a sign of elegance and can be used to carry quite a number of items. Stylish messenger bags for men compliment a great looking attire and the best thing with men’s messenger bags is that they are available in many colors and sizes.
10. The Jewelry – Bracelets (Nautical Trend, Metal, Beaded and Leather), Tribal & Beaded Necklace & Fashion Rings Jewelry is another, simple way of making you stand out from the crowd. Asides your wrist watch, having a nice ring, bracelet or necklace is a transferable accessory that, if you know how to wear it, can go with a number of outfits. This applies at work, home or on your way out on a Friday night. And most imiportantly, it makes you stand out from the crowd.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Thank you so much for reading. Please note this list is not exhaustive and only includes the basics that all modern gentlemen must have. Basically, fashion accessories can be loosely categorized into two general areas: those that are carried and those that are worn.
Traditional carried accessories include messenger bags and brief cases, umbrellas, wallets, some tech gadgets, tablet computers with their sleeves and mobile phones and covers (yeah they are the new fashion accessory).
Accessories that are worn may include jackets, foot wears, cravats, ties, hats and caps, belts and suspenders, jewelry and bracelets, rings, watches, scarves, socks, pocket squares, ties, tie bars and tie pins.

This is for any man who is bold enough to explore the world of wrist wear and to the man who isn’t there yet, here is a proof that bracelets can be a stylish piece of accessory for the modern gentleman.
Thank God It’s Friday and the Weekend Starts!!! As it is our tradition, every 3rd Friday of the month I write on Friday Style Inspiration series – strictly meant to inspire your style and outfit for Fridays. So today, I’m writing about the need to include accessories in your outfit, but I’m focusing more on men’s bracelet today, by next week I’ll be talking more about Men’s Essential Accessories in details…So stay tuned!
Wikipedia defines fashion accessory as an item used to contribute, in a secondary manner, to the wearer’s outfit/clothing, often used to complete an outfit and chosen to specifically complement the wearer’s look.
Two key words I would like to pick out from the above definition are Complete and Complement.
So you will all agree with me that accessories are meant to complete an outfit and complement a look, right? …Good! So it also means your dressing is incomplete without an ACCESSORY. Right? OK….Great!
QUESTION: Why then do some of you gents, feel comfortable excluding accessories from your outfit?
Personally, I’m a huge fan of men’s jewelry – bracelets and men’s fashion rings are two particular accessories you will always find me wearing. Once upon a time, I had left my house hurriedly without adorning my wrist with bracelets or even a wrist watch, I felt so terrible, you can’t even imagine! You know that kind of feeling you get when you are half way through your journey and suddenly realize that you forgot your phone at home. Yeah! That’s It! That’s how I felt.
So I wonder how some guys manage to remain comfortable throughout the day wearing just their clothes, sporting a dapper look, but without a single accessory in sight…on their wrist.
The truth is jewelry’s used to be associated with ladies, but in recent years, we’ve seen men’s jewelry take off and develop into a must-have accessory for style-conscious men.
From wooden beads to leather cuffs to metal bands, there are various types of bracelets available today in the market one can choose from – Contact me if you need some. I think it’s essential for all men to start wearing bracelets, however, I know a few reserved men would be skeptical trying them out, but for those men who aren’t afraid to confidently adorn their wrists, this is for you. I have compiled a Look Book of Different types of wrist wears for your viewing pleasure as well as inspiration. My hope is that you would invest in bracelets and start incorporating them in your outfit starting from today. Enjoy!
1. METAL BRACELETS
2. NAUTICAL TREND BRACELETS
3. BEADED BRACELETS
4. LEATHER BRACELETS & WOVEN BRACELETS
FINAL WORD
So there you have it, proof that bracelets can be a stylish piece of accessory for the modern gent. As always, I want to know what you gents think. Are you already a keen bracelet wearer? Or do you shy away from any form of men’s jewelry?
