[EVENT] Very Special Cargo
Laura lifted the last plastic tub, filled with soil and three neat rows of carrots, as though it weighed nothing at all. She loaded it into the back of the moving truck, with the rest of the crops. None of it was quite ready to eat yet, they were lucky they had managed to scavenge so much canned and frozen food. She dusted off her dirty hands on her jeans, trying not to think about the fuss her dad had made about their separation for this mission. He wasn’t going to let her do anything but run the farm if she didn’t remind him that she was perfectly capable of defending herself. He seemed to forget that she was built for this. Actually, he probably wanted to forget.
She made sure that everything was securely arranged, not wanting any of the plants to slide around or tip. When she was done, she unclipped the doors from the sides of the trailer, closed and locked them. The fact was, that once you’ve killed nearly two dozen people before you turn sixteen, it’s kind of nice to have someone who pretends that you’re just his kid, not a monster genetically engineered for the express purpose of killing him. But that wasn’t practical anymore. In this tower she was easily in the top ten most equipped to make it out there on her own, and when you considered that there was a guy with laser eyes on that list, top ten isn’t faint praise.
She slid her pink sunglasses onto the top of her head, and climbed up into the cab that was certainly designed for someone taller. She was glad that the animals were already at Haven, the move would be stressful both for them, and for whichever poor soul got stuck with the job. She put her boot up against the dashboard, a steel cap with a pierced toe, but otherwise in near-perfect condition. She untied the shoelace, not satisfied with the tightness, and began to work at retying it.
