hi um idk if this is sorta weird of me to ask??? but what the heck??? i feel like im ocd but i dont want to be pretentious and over paranoid. lets just say i wash my hands way more than i eat and my parents keep on scolding me for doing that and it feels horrible all the time and blabla and i wanna try to become better and i wanna know is there a way to get over it? sorry for blabbering so much TT and sorry if i offended you in anyway TTTTTTT
Not offended at all, love! That’s not the least bit pretentious and your concern is completely valid.
First, I’m SO sorry you’re getting criticism from your parents. I got it from my mother growing up as well. It was really a surprise when my aunt told me just a couple of years ago that my mother ALSO washed her hands until they bled when she was younger. Her subsequent lack of treatment for all her own mental health issues really affected my upbringing.
There’s no cure for OCD but you can lessen symptoms to an extent! The best treatment is a combination of medication and therapy. I understand that immersion therapy is THE most effective approach but last I checked was too expensive for me. For now, I have a therapist and I just started on a new medication, Luvox. It’s too early to see yet if it’ll be effective but I hope so; I’ve been on Lamictal a long time but it’s just to stabilize my moods, not for OCD treatment, so I hope to see some distinct improvement later. It’s important to know that there’s a wide variety of medications and many, many mental health professionals, so if one doesn’t work out, I really encourage people to try another.
My advice for you while you’re still at home is to tell your parents you’d like to get professional help because it’s doing you absolutely no good to have this untreated and they clearly already recognize that it’s a problem. I would focus on pitching therapy first, not medication, because that can be brought up later and I don’t want you to risk getting a “no” to both therapy and meds at once. If your parents want to see any progress at all, any reduction in the amount of times a day you apparently bother them by washing your hands, they should really be open-minded about professional treatment. Their attempt to intervene increases your anxiety which aggravates OCD further. If they’re completely against professional treatment, I recommend talking to a counselor at school. Counselors aren’t psychiatrists but they’re still there to help you and listen and be a safe outlet. When I was in high school, they were pretty much all I had. I didn’t get formally diagnosed until I was 18.
I hope that will help, at least a little. I’m always here to listen and try to offer advice. Please update me later on how things are going for you. xxxo
