essentially, flashheart had a secret affair with a kittypet, who then had freddy (rusty basically), who he only got to meet once before being forced to be apart from them. freddy grew up not being fully aware he’s got clan blood. one day, his neighbor, cripp (smudge basically), tells him their other friend, the fat lazy barn cat batty, went out in the woods on her own several times. freddy, his curiosity piqued, ventures out in the woods that night to explore. he runs into batty, and then runs int flashheart out on patrol. flashheart miraculously recognizes him, and insists he come to the camp with him. freddy ultimately decides to do so, with batty eavesdropping in a tree lol
flashheart escorts freddy to camp, meanwhile cripp assumes he was kidnapped and/or worse, killed, by them. in a panic he runs away from the area. so, when freddy makes it to camp, it’s immediately met with distaste. a few discrimination gets thrown at him, all while flashheart does his best to convince everyone to let him stay with them. compromising a challenge freddy must pass in order to prove himself capable. lightningpaw (ivan obv lol) takes on the challenge, beats him up a little, but ultimately gets outsmarted by freddy, who wins. the clan reluctantly respects their leader, flashheart’s, decision to let him stay.
so yeah, freddy ends up making friends with the other apprentices. he still deals with hurtful comments and treatment, but he eventually gains respect overtime. also batty joins the clan eventually too, but she insists on keeping her name
unfortunately, across the forest, thunderclan has been having issues with shadowclan, who become more and more corrupt by the day. especially in the midst of leaf-fall when many are starting to starve and prey is driven away. a particular purple-ish red shadowclan apprentice wishes to catch something big for her family at first, but then falls into a rabbit hole of a trying to understand the suspiciously malicious connection between her higher up clanmates and something to do with thunderclan.
spoiler alert. shadowclan rulers suck, and thunderclan’s deputy is secretly working against his own clan (ric). they want to take over both clans and territories, and maybe dominate the other 2 in the process. freddy gradually learns of this when their deputy is revealed. scarlett(paw?)’s parents are also manipulated into contributing to that, and they do not like her sneaking off and jeopardizing the plan
