Agnigarh is situated in Tezpur district of Assam, which is around 4.8 km away from the Tezpur town. It is famous as the love site of northeast. The literal meaning of Agnigarh is "accommodation between fire". The meaning of Agni in Assamese is Fire and Garh means castle covered by walls. Agnigarh is a green hillock that was once a castle and is now an incredible hil-garden with landscaped rolling greensward and several nicely carved monuments throughout the site. As per Hindu mythology, Agnigarh is the site of the castle, which was constantly surrounded by a fire to allow no one to enter and leave the perimeter without consent. The son of Bali, Bana (also called Banasura) constructed it to isolate his daughter Usha. Banasura was a horrible and strong asura but he was Lord Shiva's prime devotee. Behind such an outstanding name Agnigarh there is a legendary tale. Usha, the daughter of King Banasura once saw in her dream a very lovely person and falling in love with him, he was the grandson of Lord Krishna. His name is Aniruddha. Before he appeared in her dreams, she didn't even see him. Chitralekha, Usha's companion, had been a master sculptor and drew an Aniruddha portrait using only the descriptions of Usha. She succeeded extremely well with the drawing, helping Usha to recognize him. But with that connection, King Bana was unhappy. Chitralekha, under Gandharva rites, spirited the prince away with his magic power and secretly married him to Usha. King Bana was not pleased about this, and put Aniruddha into prison and built Agnigarh fortified so Usha could not meet him. When Lord Krishna knew this, he went to Aniruddha's rescue. Not long after, Between the Lord and the Asura King Banasura was a very fierce fight. Indeed, it is thought that during the excellent Mahabharata War the fight between Lord Krishna and the King Banasura was fought in this very location in Tezpur, and so Lord Krishna allowed the pair to be united.
