THINKING IT WOULD JUST BE ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE, Hattie walked over the bridge and made her way to Vauxhall Cross. The weather was not bad; mild for the time of the year, a welcoming change from the climate she had been dropped into mere days ago. The operative got into the building with her security badge and made her way up to the right floor, where she entered The Pit otherwise known as the place where she owned a desk she competed her paperwork at.
Images and intel about missions decorated the massive screen opposite of operatives’ desks, showing information about active missions all around the world. The screen was, like the missions, active; following the status of the missions, along with blinking lights and tiny pieces of information that made sense to everyone working in the room and with the right clearance level.
Hattie had taken off her coat and hoodie, which she had thrown over her office chair, when the phone rang. Knowing better than letting it ring when it was clear that her presence had been noticed, she heard the Director of Operations on the other side of the line when she picked up, asking her to come up to his office. The conversation lasted less than 15 seconds, and as per usual, she knew she would be informed of his reason for calling at his office.
Once she had made her way to the right floor, she didn’t have to bother with knocking as he already called her into his office when she approached Hattie supposed she had his brilliant assistant to thank for saving her the trouble of knocking like he hadn’t been expecting her. Inside of his office, she was glad to the familiar and odd items that made his office ... his. Artefacts from all over the worlds were shown in the office or hung against the wall for his enjoyment and others’ who had the pleasure of visiting his office. “ What have you got for me ? ”
Ever since she joined the military, Hattie had thrown herself into any and all battles. The joy was almost visible in her eyes, was it not for her overpowering desire to make the world a better and safer place every time she stepped onto the tarmac to be shipped off to, often, a Godforsaken place. This time was no different, but as her boss opened up the file almost a non-verbal manner to give Hattie clearance for the mission her breath hitched in her throat as she recognised the man in the picture. Immediately, she became conscious of her body language and ensured it would be unable to be read knowing that if she showed any kind of familiarity to the person in the picture, the mission would be passed on to someone else; any and all judgements out of her control.
