The 4 Zones of Organization in the age of disruption - Agreementpaper
What should a #business do to #grow and win? It needs to operate in four different zones: the #Performance Zone, the #Productivity Zone, the #Transformation Zone, and the Incubation Zone. This is what they mean. In his 2015 book, “Zone to Win,” Geoffrey Moore lays out a model distinguishing four types of innovation that an organization should invest in to be successful and grow in both the short and the long run. The basis are two dimensions: - Sustaining vs. Disruptive Innovations: Sustaining innovations concern improvement to something existing. Disruptive innovations aim at creating something new. - Revenue Performance vs. Enabling Investments. Revenue Performance concerns an organization’s day-to-day costs and revenues. Enabling Investments focus on funding new opportunities. In addition Moore defines three Horizons 1. Horizon 1: the coming fiscal year 2. Horizon 2: the coming two to three years 3. Horizon 3: the coming three to five years Based on a combination of these factors, the four zones are: 1️⃣ PERFORMANCE ZONE (Sustaining, Revenue Performance, Horizon 1) Day-to-day financial and operational performance with an orientation on the current or coming fiscal year and a focus on efficiently offering products and services to customers. 2️⃣ PRODUCTIVITY ZONE (Sustaining, Enabling Investments, Horizon 1) Incremental and process innovation aimed at improving quality, effectiveness and efficiency in an incremental continuous manner, often based on automation and digitalization. 3️⃣ TRANSFORMATION ZONE (Disruptive, Revenue Performance, Horizon 2) Focus on the “next” products and services and scaling, aimed at making a qualitative and/or quantitative transition. Involves an often dramatic reallocation of resources compared to Horizon 1. 4️⃣ INCUBATION ZONE (Disruptive, Enabling Investments, Horizon 3) Investing in long-term opportunities that may or may not work out. Those that are successful can develop into the next version of the organization or a new line of business. Most organizations that I know spend their time, money and energy largely on Zones 1 and 2, and thus largely on Horizon 1. And this is the key message of the zones: make sure you do enough in Zone 3 and 4 as well so that you continuously invest your time, money and energy also in long-term success and growth. Does your organization pay enough attention to all four zones?
