⊹ ࣪ ˖ HAJIME HINATA x FEM! CAT OWNER READER ᓚ₍ ^. .^₎ -- fic
Hajime isn't an idiot. He's noticed that you've been acting strange ever since the second trial ended. You've been distant, figuratively and literally. There has been days where you wouldn't leave your cottage, and when you did, you weren't entirely present either. Something had laid claim to your mind and refused to let up. Hajime easily could've brushed it off, if it weren't for the growing unease regarding your absence during breakfast.
"She's seriously skippin' breakfast again? Jeez- this is like, the third day in a row." Akane managed while scarfing down a plate of scrambled eggs.
"I don't really get it, though. She wasn't even that close to Mahiru or Peko. It doesn't make sense that she'd get all depressed." Souda chimes in. Being upset over their deaths wasn't unreasonable. But Hajime knew you could gather the strength to leave your cottage regardless. Your resiliency is something he appreciated about you. During investigations and class trials, he could always count on you to back him up.
That's exactly why your absence makes his stomach churn.
"Perhaps, there is another reason for her dubious behaviour?" Gundham crosses his arms.
"That reminds me. Recently, she's been finding fur in her mouth. I think." Chiaki tilted her head to the side.
"That is correct!" Sonia nodded, "Yesterday, I even encountered her at the supermarket. When I greeted her, I noticed a large assortment of canned foods in her shopping cart."
"What kind of canned food was it, Sonia?" Hajime presses. "If I remember correctly, her cart held various cans of tuna and salmon." Huh. That does sound unusual, but from his judgement, not outright incriminating.
"M-Maybe someone should go check on her? Just t-to make sure she's okay." Mikan stutters out. "I'll go." Hajime doesn't miss a beat, getting up and quickly rinsing his orange juice glass. "A-Are you sure, man? Do you want one of us to go with you?" Souda rubs the back of his neck. "That's fine. My cabin is right in front of hers anyway. I'll head over now."
Hajime left the hotel restaurant soon after, chewing the situation over in his head. By themselves, skipping breakfast and buying a bulk supply of tuna doesn't sound like much to worry about. However, when he considers your behaviour in the context of the killing game, it was enough to make his head throb. All he knew for sure was that his friend hasn't been themselves recently, and it's making him worry like all hell. He approaches your cabin door, readying his fist to rap against it. Before he could, the sound of fervent scratching greeted him from inside.
What the hell? Hajime called out your name. "It's Hajime. Is everything okay in there?" The scratching paused for a moment, before he heard a soft growl and skittering across the floor. Did she have a pet inside her cabin or something? "Are you in there?" Hajime leaned against the door, feeling it push open from his weight. It's unlocked? Dread pooled up in his stomach. Seeing the slight crack in the entrance, he took this opportunity to carefully slip inside your room.
But instead of finding you, Hajime spotted a furry cat lying on the floor. Huh. The cat jumps and hisses viscously at the stranger. The brunet took a cautious step behind him, nearly tripping over a toy mouse. He watches the cat run and shield itself behind your couch. With a quick glance around your cabin, Hajime starts to piece things together. The cans of tuna and salmon were stacked against the wall, colourful toys strewn across the floor, and a small velvet cushion at the foot of your bed; your pet cat has somehow found its way onto Jabberwock Island.
Hajime searched your cabin and discovered you weren't inside. This whole situation kept on getting stranger. Why leave your cottage unlocked if you were going out? Or go as far as to stop leaving your room altogether. There was no way Hajime could leave with more questions than he arrived with. So, he decided to camp out inside your cabin until you returned. His presence wasn't appreciated by your furry companion, earning Hajime a couple scratches while trying to coax them out from under the bed.
It took three cans of food, a feathered cat teaser, and an ungodly amount of patience for your cat to cozy up with him on the couch. Hajime couldn't recall how many minutes passed before he heard the door creak open. You were standing in the doorway, yelping abruptly as your e-Handbook slipped from your grasp. Hajime flinches up, caught off-guard by your entrance, but overall glad to see you're safe. He slipped out from below your cat and apologized for scaring you.
"I came by because I wanted to check in on you, but your door was unlocked. So, I decided to sit here and wait for you." You left the door open? Dear God. Nearly shoving past him, you were at your cat's side within seconds, cradling them in your arms. You could've sworn it was locked when you left. When questioned by Hajime, you explained that yesterday, you had left your e-Handbook on the shelf while you were shopping at the supermarket. Once you had realized it was missing, you were too frazzled to remember to double check the lock. Hajime hummed in understanding. If your e-Handbook had been lost or destroyed, you run the risk of punishment. But that wasn't his only concern.
"Never mind that, is everything alright? We haven't seen you around in a while." Your stomach sunk at the question. Saying it out loud might sound a little...odd. What if you told Hajime, and he judged you for it? Or didn't take you seriously? He watched your lips purse into a thin line. "If you don't want to talk about it, that's alright. I'm just-" He pauses for a moment. His gaze lingered on your dark bags and tired eyes.
"I'm worried about you. I want to help in any way I can." Hajime's firm tone barely masked the tremble in his voice. Hajime cared about you. So much. You couldn't hide it anymore.
So, you told him. You told Hajime about how Monokuma dropped your pet cat at your doorstep, on the night after Mahiru's death. Grappling that your beloved pet was somehow roped into this vicious killing game. How were you meant to take care of them like this? God forbid, if something happened to you. There would be nobody left to look after them. That's why you hid yourself away, afraid that if you stepped outside- there'd be a knife at your throat within seconds.
As you spoke, Hajime nodded carefully at your words. He slowly began to understand. It wasn't just your life you were protecting, but your cat's as well. "I get that. But you shouldn't be skipping breakfast. It wouldn't do any good for either of you." Hajime wasn't wrong, but there were still risks to leaving your cabin. The possibilities paralyzed you, rendering it impossible for you to leave your room at all.
"If it would make you feel any better, I could always accompany you to places." You smiled. Hajime was one of the only people you felt you could trust here. After muttering a thank you, Hajime noticed the way your gaze hardened. You asked him, if anything happened to you, could he take care of your pet? The two of you stopped to look around the state of your bedroom. "Of course. If you're sure. I feel like Gundham would do a better job than I could." It didn't matter. You trusted Hajime.
"Regardless," He turned to you, with a gleam of something you haven't known in days. "Nothing's going to happen to you two. We're going to make it off this island, right?" Right. On that note, you pulled him in for a quick squeeze. You felt his shoulders stiffen against you, before slowly wrapping his arms in a secure hold around your waist. "Hey, I'm here for you, okay?" You couldn't help the smile that grew on your lips at his words. With a nod, you settled your head to rest on his shoulder. Of course, you didn't miss the way his breath hitches as you do. A small chuckle escapes your lips as he pulls away just enough to glare at you.
And like clockwork, a deep growl erupted from your stomach. You pulled back fully, eyes blown wide as you apologized profusely. Hajime brushed it off with a smile that could heal a world of hurt. "C'mon, let's get you breakfast." He held a hand out to you. Who were you to refuse after all this? With your hand in his, you left your cabin without even looking over your shoulder.
