Today's ebook and crochet selection is #anextraordinaryunion and #ahopedivided both part of the #theloyalleague series by #alyssacoleauthor Both titles are available to purchase as an ebook from #kindle or #googlebooks for $9.99 Both titles are also available as audio books from #googlebooks for ☆$14.95☆ or #audile for $19.59 This title is available to borrow from #hoopla as an ebook These books are historical interracial romances. Both novels take place during The Civil War and feature black woman main characters and white men romantic leads. The third novel in this series will feature a character from the previous novels a black man. So that should be an interesting perspective. In An Extraordinary Union the main character is Elle Burns, a former enslaved woman with an eidetic memory. She is working as a spy and pretending to be a mute 'slave'. As it happens Malcolm McCall is a detective for The Pinkerton's Secret Service and is doing some spying of his own. The interactions between Elle and Malcolm do not really feel organic until more than 25% into the novel. Still this a clever storyline and works better than I thought possible. In A Hope Divided the main character is Marlie. Marlie is a privileged and educated formerly enslaved person. Her enslaved mother taught her how to use roots and herbs to heal. Her uninvolved white father has given her a privileged position in her home and family. Her romantic interest is Ewan McCall, younger brother of Malcolm the love interest in An Extraordinary Union and also involved in the Union cause. This novel really works. The characters interactions feel natural and organic. Tje storyline surrounding the characters, why they are where they are, why they do what they do, all feels more natural and organic in this novel. I was quite invested in Marlie and Ewan's story. I'm not sure if this novel works better because the concept is already familiar from the first novel in this series or if this is just a better book. The author uses the English maltreatment of the Scottish as a bonding point between the black and white characters. It's a delicate balance and she handles it well. https://www.instagram.com/p/BnWEh-XFRi8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=zzwoijgkb420
