Fabulous Friday, friend. This is my December holiday thrive challenge for all of us who maybe, possibly don't love the holidays as much as some of the rest of you. But all are invited to participate and I'd super love to hear the effects-good, bad, enlightening, freeing or otherwise. So here goes: the challenge is to give away the number of items of the date every day this month. So today is the 1st-1 item. Tomorrow the second-2 items...but I don't mean purchase items to give away, I mean give away, throw away, recycle whenever possible anything that is holding you back, not serving or something else to walk around or clean. If you don't use it, need it or love it it's free game. Get creative as to who may need the items and how they can be recycled. Who's in? Let's lighten our lives for a new year and see who we can serve in the process. I'd love to hear your experiences. Aids Awareness Day Prep

Despite the fact that I was super busy today preparing the stuffing and other Thanksgiving dinner essentials, it was imperative to make the brownies and cookies today so I stayed up all night finishing them up. THe brownie at first did not turn out well because it was too thin, so my mom and I decided to create an Oreo-brownie sandwich. It actually turned out scrumptious. The chocolate chip cookies came out great. I am so excited to sell all of these at the bake sale!

AIDS AWARENESS DAY- Greengates Style

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! 

Although International Aids Day is on December 1st, my school decided to have it on Thanksgiving Day- It makes sense, giving back and being thankful for your fortunate life, right?

We've been planning for this forever now, and today is the big day to actually carry out our plan. We planned on having a hat competition for the Junior school and then a bake sale for Kinders, juniors and seniors. We also allowed students in the intermediate school to have a non-uniform day as long as they wore red and white to raise awareness.

The first thing Pekhna and I did when we got to school was to run around from one homeroom to another to collect donations and sell our hand-made red ribbons. The amount of donations we were able to collect was astonishing. (A few people donated 1000 pesos!) Today was such a hectic day, even thinking about it now gives me a headache.. haha

So after collecting the donations, we went down to the patio to set up for our bake sale and hat competition for the junior school. We decorated the sugar cookies, made a playlist and set up the table for the bake sale and sorted the change. All of the children immediately ran to the picnic table to buy our pastry! It was like the hunger games- they were all fighting for the last chocolate chip cookie. As for the hats competition, the children were not eager in participating at first, but once I mentioned about there being a prize all of the students suddenly became interested in competing. There were many interesting hats around, like a Christmas Tree and Perry the Platypus. It was great seeing the little kids building up the courage to go up and show off their hats to everyone else watching. (We asked Luis and Roberto to judge for us!) Some of us then went to the kindergarten classrooms to sell our delicious cookies etc. The 3 year olds were so eager to get some sugar in their system, it made it hard to charge them, but hey- its for charity, so thank you! :) 

Once the junior break ended, we went up to the end of the field and started setting up for the senior school bake sale. We had countless amounts of pastry; from cookies to pumpkin pie (keeping that Thanksgiving spirit!) and we even had a chocolate fountain! We however had to run around the school up and down the hill. We were very ambitious and decided to order pizza to have a combined Bake-Pizza Sale. Pizza kept arriving, one box after the other and more pastries kept arriving, which was extremely great. I didn't think we would see all of it and end up not making profit but I was very wrong. Once the bell rang at 11:45 am, there was already a huge line of eager and hungry students waiting to get their food. It was so hectic, I had crumbs and cream all over myself from constantly reaching over to get them their purchase.

Today was a great day. We ended up making approximately 15174.5 pesos!!!!!!! That's a crazy amount! All proceeds will be donated to Casa De La Sal, an orphanage for kids with aids. I really hope that our money will help these kids in need, and that we were able to raise awareness on aids even in the slightest bit. Though I was sweaty and in pain for the entire day, it was definitely worth it.
