The Darkbeasts, and all variations thereof.

We already see one side of the spectrum of Beasthood in some of the first bosses of the game--the Cleric Beasts--and it displays what happens when someone so viciously resists Beasthood. It turns them into mad, warped things that are very clearly in many kinds of anguish.

And then you have the Darkbeasts... andallvariationsthereofyadayada. Out of all beasts, they have the most human faces (with the particularly visceral exception of whatever the fuck the Silverbeast is). They prowl fluidly, in an almost catlike fashion, and their black hair curls in strange whorls. Unlike other Beast boss themes, theirs is majestic, befitting a sort of sacred animal rather than a mindless killer of men. They possess the power of electricity within their bodies, a power rivaled in nature only by the minor pyromancies cast by certain intelligent Loran beasts. And the greatest among them are naught but fur and bones.

At first, one might simply brush them off as one of the many abominations spat out by Ailing Loran of the Sands, but then you meet a fellow in the Forbidden Woods. A fellow who, if taken back to the Ward, will begin to kill off everyone inside. A fellow who will craft and give you beast pellets from their remains.

A fellow who, if struck, will turn into an Abhorrent Beast and still be lucid enough to berate you in his bestial form.

I'm sure if you were to ask most people about their opinion on becoming a beast, they would not be fond of the prospect. Yet I have no doubt that some--likely from the stock of abusers, murderers, and true anarchists--would have no qualms whatsoever.

So yes, perhaps the Darkbeasts are just a Shiny evolution of the Scourge Beast that managed to pull the power of Zeus from the dry Loran air. But maybe they are different because, where the Cleric Beasts blindly said, "No! No, no, no, I refuse!" to their Beasthood,

The Darkbeasts said, "Yes."

Could the Darkbeast be connected to Beast Patients?

I know I previously made a theory against Darkbeasts being the final expression of beasthood, and I still stand by that, but could Darkbeasts be an evolved form of the male beast patients? Beast Patients are the only beasts with a similar skull shape to the Darkbeast, a humanoid skull, and their hands line up too. Scourge beasts have fingers with joints on the underside/no joints at all, while Beast patients and Darkbeasts have joints like a human hand. Beast patients and Darkbeasts are also found together in the same areas. Darkbeasts only exist where Beast patients do. If the female patients turn into/are heavily related to Blood-Starved Beasts, why can't the male patients turn into/are heavily related to Darkbeasts? It would also explain how Yahar'gul got Paarl in the first place. It's much easier to lure a Darkbeast from a neighboring town than it is to capture one and bring it up from a labyrinth that's incredibly deep underground. The male patients are never associated with electricity though, so that's a hole in this theory. However, the silver beasts, which are associated with the patients due to their location in ailing loran, do have electrical powers and also have a similar skull and hand shape, although they do have claws coming out of the back of their palms.

Loran is a tragic land that was devoured by the sands. The tragedy that struck this ailing land of Loran is said to have its roots in the scourge of the beast. Some have made the dreaded extrapolation that Yharnam may be next.

There are trace remains of medical procedures in parts of ailing Loran. Whether these were attempts to control the scourge of the beast, or the cause of the outbreak, is unknown.
