How Ajit Pawar Plane Crash Unfolded: Civil Aviation Ministry’s Detailed Timeline
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others were killed when the chartered aircraft carrying them crashed near Baramati while attempting to land early on Wednesday morning. The Civil Aviation Ministry has released a detailed sequence of events outlining how the accident unfolded, highlighting challenges posed by the airfield and visibility conditions as the flight approached Runway 11.
Baramati operates as an uncontrolled airfield, meaning formal air traffic control services are not provided by a conventional ATC tower. Instead, pilots and flight instructors from nearby flying organisations share traffic information. This places greater reliance on visual flight conditions and pilot judgement during approach and landing, particularly under marginal weather conditions.
According to the ministry’s timeline, the jet — a Learjet 45 on charter from Mumbai — first made contact with Baramati’s airspace around 08:18 am as it approached the destination. Over the next 20 minutes, the aircraft continued its descent toward Baramati while flight-tracking data indicated it was steadily reducing altitude.
When the plane was approximately 30 nautical miles from the airfield, personnel provided information that winds were calm and visibility was about 3,000 metres — below optimal norms for a routine landing but still within what some pilots may consider marginal visual operating conditions.
During the first landing attempt, the crew reported that the runway was not in sight and executed a go-around. As the aircraft circled for a second approach, Baramati’s advisory asked again whether the runway was visible. Initially, the pilots responded that the runway remained out of sight. Only later did the crew confirm visual contact.
At approximately 08:43 am, after the pilots reported they could see the runway, Baramati’s advisory issued a landing clearance for Runway 11. Official records state the crew did not provide the standard readback of the landing clearance. Roughly one minute later, at about 08:44 am, the aircraft crashed near the threshold of the runway and burst into flames. Emergency teams were dispatched immediately, but all five occupants — including Ajit Pawar, two pilots and two attendants — sustained fatal injuries.
The Maharashtra government confirmed Pawar was en route to Baramati for scheduled political engagements related to the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections.
Baramati’s status as an uncontrolled airfield with limited navigational aids and weather support has brought renewed attention to the safety challenges associated with such facilities, particularly in low-visibility conditions without instrument landing systems.
Investigation Status:
Civil aviation authorities — including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) — have initiated a formal investigation. The flight data recorder (black box) has been recovered for analysis, which officials say will be critical to understanding the final moments before impact.
Officials have emphasised that while preliminary detail points to visibility and landing challenges at the uncontrolled Baramati airfield, the investigation remains active and conclusive findings will only be determined after thorough analysis of flight data, cockpit communication and airfield recordings.
