あずまんが大王: The Animation
Azumanga Daioh (lit. Great King Azumanga) is a slice of life comedy manga written by Kiyohiko Azuma between 1999 and 2000. The anime adaptation was directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori, written by Ichiro Okouchi, and produced by J.C. Staff between April and September 2002.
The series follows a group of girls as they go through their three years of high school.
It starts out really slowly, and as I watched I found myself simply assuming that this show was going to get a big old zero. After all, it’s a high school slice of life, and they aren’t going to military high school or anything. That being said, there are a couple shots where they use airplanes as part of a visual gag. More importantly, nearing the end of the series they take a school trip on a commercial airline, showing takeoff and everything. Unfortunately though this comes in near the close of the show, it does not follow through to the end.
At the end of the day there isn’t much content for a 26 episode series, and Azumanga Daioh gets a low score of 1.5 airplanes out of 5. However, this served as a reminder that even in shows where you least expect it, there is a place for airplanes. One should never give up hope on seeing a plane, nor give directors an easy out for not including them in their anime.
