Let’s go somewhere together. Let’s pick a spot on the map and go. Let’s stuff into the packed TSA line and smile at each other, giggling about our passport photos (mine, really, could be a mug shot) while the rest of the people huff about the line and fuss with their boarding passes. Let’s stop at an airport bar and pretend we’re on vacation a little early. Let’s get the gate just in time for you to mumble whatever you’re reading into my ear while I rest my head on your shoulder and close my eyes, practicing mindfulness to stay out of the danger zone of anxiety in my brain. Let’s travel somewhere we both haven’t been, where we’ll need to flip through a guidebook to tell us how to say key phrases like hello, and goodbye, and how do we catch a taxi? Let’s get to the hotel- a bungalow overlooking the ocean, the sound of monkeys? Are those monkeys?? You’ll say out our window while you unpack your neatly packed carryon onto the shelves in the bathroom. Let’s go to the village nearby, where the children aren’t wearing any shoes and are fascinated by the shiny things we have with us. You’ll kneel down, and let one wear your fedora, and he’ll giggle and twirl like he’s modeling it for us. Let’s eat something with our hands, something strange that we would never get to order in our Westernized world. It’s sweet and tangy, but one of the most delicious things we’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. Let’s wash our hands in a fresh pool, where fish are fat and happy, skimming their shining gills across the surface now and then to maybe show us what they’re made of. Let’s laze on the beach, your fingers sneaking into my bathing suit bottoms while I tell you to quit it, but secretly don’t want you to stop, burying my face in your neck while your hands explore, listening to your little sounds of appreciation. Let’s hike somewhere that we see a spider that makes me nearly crawl up a tree Yogi-Bear style and you scamper away shouting. Let’s reconvene and laugh, splitting the nasty Clif bar we thought we’d need for sustenance, but ditch halfway through to make out. Let’s have dinner by the light of tiki torches, swatting away overgrown mosquitoes while our sunned shoulders take in the reprieve from the heat. Let’s talk about how we’ve changed the world; how we’ve brought light into darkness. Let’s make double entendre. Let’s revel in the sweet scent of the breeze through the coconut trees. Let’s drink some fruity drinks and talk about how we’ll quit our day jobs and come here to scoop ice cream, and raise tan little babies who run amuck in the ocean. Or maybe just dogs. Either way, we’ll be happy. Let’s etch our initials into a tree like deviant teenagers, swigging rum from the bottle and occasionally catching each other’s lips in a clumsy kiss. Let’s make our mark. Let’s be free.
