A small laugh, shaking his head. He knew that Julian would try until she was blue in the face to get him to talk, but Steve simply wouldn't. He was so accustomed to putting others needs before his own, especially after he had been so selfish and entitled just years before. Not that sharing his emotions was selfish, he knew that much, because he wanted others to do it when he asked.

But still, it was hard for him. It was hard for him to tell anyone how he was really feeling about everything, and what was going on in his life. Not to mention that half the time he knew he sounded crazy, and the other half he knew he just needed to be stronger about the situation. Put on the hero face. "I'm not going to say I'm fine, because I know you'll slap the shit out of me if that's my response." A grin, because he knew she wanted the truth, but 'I'm fine' was people's go to when they didn't want to tell it.

"So no, I'm not fine. But I'm alive, and that's all I can ask for. Happy now?"
