AITech Interview with Carl D’Halluin, Chief Technology Officer, Datadobi

Data management is the at the core of data-centric enterprises focusing on sorting data siloes. Are there any platforms addressing this need?

1. Can you tell us more about yourself? How did you get into tech?

Ever since I was a little kid, I developed a passion for mathematics. For me, math theories are art in its purest form. They can be as beautiful as classical or modern paintings, sculptures, or architecture.

When I realized that computers can actually do something useful with that math, I decided to become a software engineer. Building innovative systems to solve real-world problems using clever algorithms is the most exciting job I could have ever imagined.

2. Can you give us a brief of your career before Datadobi?

My initial focus was on security and cryptography, but that quickly shifted to building large-scale distributed systems storing or manipulating data. Security, scalability, performance, and availability are important aspects of such systems.

Tell us about your role at LexisNexis Risk Solutions

I am responsible for leading the company’s insurance data science teams which develop and services our analytics and modelling products. With more than 25 years of experience in data and analytics across the insurance and financial services industries and market-leading innovations, my team develops incremental predictive uses of existing data and processes.  We have a strong focus on developing personal and commercial lines credit-based loss models as well as new non-credit industry solutions.

1. Tell us about yourself and your role at Mindtech

After working in the Software and Semiconductor industries for more than twenty years, I and the early founders of Mindtech – friends who I’d known for a long time – started to get curious. Would it be possible, we wondered, to develop and deliver AI applications as a “Neural Network platform” on a chip?

1. Tell us how you came to be the CPO. How much of your typical day is involved in innovating new technology for your customers?

– My entire career revolved around customers. More specifically, understanding their problems and finding a solution.

– The foundation of my first startup foundation was consulting, with an ultimate goal to build a product and sell it to a big player. After a few years, this goal was accomplished, and the company was successfully acquired by Sun Microsystems.

1. Tell us about your role at KORE Wireless. How much of your typical day is involved in innovating IoT-based tech for your customers? At KORE, we pride ourselves on the ability to craft IoT enablement solutions based upon direct customer feedback. Customer centricity – indeed customer obsession – is a core value at KORE, and I lead from the front on this dimension. I am heavily involved with key customers and key pursuits. I am convinced that only by being truly customer and market-facing for at least half of one’s average day, can a leader really help a company innovate solutions that customers want. It is this customer-obsession that  drives the ongoing development of our deep industry knowledge and expertise.

Kevin Bocek from Venafi talks about the critical role of cybersecurity in today's digital world and how Venafi differentiates itself in this competitive market.

1. Tell us about your role at Venafi. How much of your typical day is involved in innovating cyber security tech for your customers?

I oversee Venafi’s technology ecosystem and threat intelligence initiatives. This means I get to spend 100% of my time focused on innovation, from working with the world’s largest developers, such as HashiCorp, to new start-ups, like Akeyless. I’m also continuously looking for new machine identity threats that others have not found. Overall, it’s really not work for me, it’s fun.

2. What are the applications or rather opportunities you seek to have with your services?

We’re industry leaders, Venafi is forging ahead with the future of machine identity management. We’re already living in a world where the number of machines, such as those in the cloud or our devices – far outnumber humans. So, Venafi is inventing technology that will protect machine identities at scale and speed, as well as drive open source innovation. This way, the entire community benefits.

1.Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your career before iion?

Believe it or not, I am a qualified medical doctor. I found my true calling with digital media and the internet and switched careers almost 20 years ago. I was fortunate to meet one of my fellow co-founders Wout 17 years ago and have since been involved in a number of startups, a sale of our business, and an ASX listing, to boot.

2. What was the inspiration behind beginning your career in this industry?

While studying medicine in my early 20s, I was drawn to the internet and began learning SEO/PPC in my free time as a hobby. I also immersed myself in the earliest forms of display ads and started doing affiliate marketing, which helped me earn enough to pay for my master’s degree. This journey led me to the realisation that my true passion was not medicine, it was digital media. And I haven’t looked back since. It was truly the best decision I ever made.

1. Tell us how you came to be the CEO at Inbenta. How much of your typical day is involved in innovating AI tech for your customers?

I am the founder of the company, and this is how I became also CEO. We have now an excellent team of specialists in AI and semantic technologies, but indeed I like to keep a foot on how the technology is unfolding and what our customers use Inbenta and how new use cases can be deployed with our Natural Language Processing architecture.
