Ajoyo - War Chant EP - 4-track preview of the next LP

Hailed for the vibrant eclecticism and socially conscious engagement of its eponymous 2015 debut, the spellbinding jazz- world ensemble AJOYO returns with War Chant. The four-track EP offers an enticing preview of the group’s full length sophomore release WAR CHANT, due out in early 2020. Alongside saxophonist/bandleader Yacine Boularès, War Chant features a deeply attuned working lineup with vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles, keyboardist/producer Jesse Fischer, bassist Kyle Miles, guitarist Michael Valeanu and drummer Philippe Lemm. Trumpeter Takuya Kuroda appears on “Assyko,” and Keita Ogawa and Foluso Mimy guest on percussion as well.

Album’s out and doesn't disappoint. It’s a tried and tested format (see: Yaaba Funk, or Alex Wilson’s Afro Saxon), but, in Ajoyo’s case; Sarah Elizabeth Charles’ vocals make it that little bit more personal.

AJOYO is the vision of multi-reed player Yacine Boularès, a mystic brew blending african tradition, jazz and soul.  More than music, it's a joyful ceremony, a fuller experience bringing musicians and audience close together.

BENSKIN is one of my latest compositions. I came up with the music based on a Cameroonian dance rhythm and spoke to Sarah about the concept of the song. I wanted to target the inequalities that I had witnessed in the recent events in the U.S.  I wrote the first verse: I long for the day,   My color, my kind, My gender, my race, Won't trouble your mind. Sarah wrote the rest of the song and completely embraced the whole concept.
