India has a stunning variety of unique avian life. Wildlife SOS photographer Akash Dolas usually brings us breathtaking leopard rescue images, but he also sees the huge biodiversity of the Western Ghat mountains of Maharashtra near our Leopard Rescue Centre. Akash photographed the moment this paradise flycatcher took flight, with an intense stare and a whip of its exquisite tail feathers.
Leopards are known for their speed and stealth, which doesn’t make a photographer’s job easy. Akash Dolas has a knack for understanding a leopard’s behaviour and anticipating the timing to get that perfect image. This is young Yeva running through her forest enclosure, and hiding behind a tree as she sharpens her claws. Can leopards give “bear hugs”?

Young leopards look like such trouble-makers. Attentive to every sound, smell and sight, ready to play and pounce. Beautiful Yeva is six months old. At just 25 days old and after many attempts to reunite her with her mum, she was brought to our Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre (MLRC) for care and a permanent home. Just look at that face!

Wildlife SOS
The rare hangul, or Kashmir stag, is critically endangered. So it’s extraordinary to realize Wildlife SOS photographer Akash Dolas captured an image of roughly 2% of the world’s remaining population in just one shot.
This vibrant fan-throated lizard strikes a pose to show off its colours. Do you know all of India’s lizards?

We save snake photos for last because many people instantly look away. Reactions to snakes by mammals, both human and otherwise, is the result of millions of years of evolution trying to avoid each other. Fearless Akash Dolas got this image of a colourful vine snake near the MLRC.
Many miniature murder muppets. These tiny little jungle cats were rescued, treated and reunited with mum. Once fully grown, these kittens will be one of the forest’s most formidable hunters. Tall with long legs, jungle cats are slightly larger than common domesticated house cats. Jungle cats are solitary in nature, making them difficult to study and are often misunderstood.
