Scene Nine ft Akera, Khonsu
(a part of my short play written few months ago)
“You were always a fool, Khonsu.”
“And you were always unbearable.”
One short, tired, dry, but real laugh slips between them.
“But you were never just a fool. You have a mind sharper than most. I may not always like where it leads you, but I have never doubted its brilliance.”
“I could say the same of you.” he folds his arms, his voice is thoughtful. “You demand everything from those who serve you, and you give them nothing in return but war and order… And yet… I have never met a ruler stronger than you.”
“Well,” Akera sounds amused. “Not the ruler you wanted.”
“No. Oh- of course not. But the ruler this empire needs. You… walk a dangerous line.” he glances at her, softer now. “One day, you may fall.”
“If I do, I will take my enemies down with me.”
“Of course you will.” he shakes his head “That’s what I never understood about you. I thought your way would break the empire, but somehow, it hasn’t. You push everything to the limit — your people, your soldiers, yourself — and yet, nothing collapses. You bend the world to your will, and it works.”
“Are you complimenting me, Khonsu? Should I be touched?”
“Don’t get used to it. It’s unsettling.”
…
“So. Are you done with trying to kill me?”
“For now,” he smirks. “But I’ll keep you on your paws.”
“Ha! As if I’d expect anything less.”
