18.5.2022 first outdoor lesson of the year!

Our exercises on this dressage lesson weren't very complex, seeing that this was the first time in the outdoor arena for the horses this year. It was rather designed just to keep the horses in control. For the most part we were in 20m circles, first warming the horses up in rising trot, then we did sitting trot one at a time, always catching up the others who were walking. We did canters the same way. After cantering to both directions we did some walk-trot transitions before returning to the main rail to do a couple leg yields and to let the horses stretch their necks a little.

Lapanen is quite an unpredictable pony by nature so I had better stay alert from the start. She has easy gaits though, so I didn't have to focus on my seat as much as I do on horses with bigger movements. Naturally, Lapanen did look around a little, but at the beginning of the lesson she did also have time (or energy, really) to listen to me as well. As the lesson went on, though, she cared about my aids less and less as everything else around her seemed more interesting to her.

When we got to the canter exercise she also started doing this pooping thing of hers where she stops and gets stuck right next to the fence and kind of starts planning on pooping without actually doing anything, even lifting her tail. She only did this when we both knew it was our turn to pick up canter! I did get her moving every time though and she did pick up a nice canter too!

All of our trotwork was alright, though in the latter half of the lesson Lapanen felt a little like she was trying to run away from under me as our transitions from trot to walk were significantly more difficult than the ones from walk back to trot. When we started posting and I gave her a little more rein she did relax and hold her head lower, which was nice alright.
