In 2004, through some combination of coincidence, luck and drunken sympathy, I ended up co-running and playing records at a monthly club night in a Bristol bar with some friends. In deference to my co-hosts, I'll stop short of actually calling what I did djing: I pressed pause then play on the cd-decks, occasionally used the crossfader, and generally mixed together records that only I only saw a relation between.
Aside from our friends and the occasionally passer-by, no-one ever really came (the problem may have been lack of promotion on our part) but one night that summer, something quite special happened: towards the end of the eveing, the place got rather busy, mostly with Spanish students. By the end of the night, there wasn't anyone sat down: everyone was one the dancefloor (for which I take no credit, I had played the early slot). When it came to the ubiquitous, after last-orders, 'one final tune', however, which was invariable always about 3 or 4, I still had a hand in the selection process. Between the 3 of us, we went for Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name Of, Alter Ego's Rocker (the current tune du jour) and, at the insistence of some girl friends stood by the dj booth, this Girls Aloud track.
And the whole place went crazy, it was incredible. After they turned on the lights and started ushering everyone out, we were signing autographs for the crazy Spanish students. None of them ever came back for another night, but The Show will always remind of how amazing that felt, where for one night I was an absolute king of the night.
