The Northman Pt.3
Part 1 here Part 2 here
Death was something familiar to Bjarke but far from like a lover or adversary, death was like the man who came to take the body away a few moments too early for loved ones to grieve or the lighter of the pyre. Death was necessary and a step towards Hel, everyone died eventually and if they were lucky they’d have a good death. Bjarke felt a resonance within his chest at the thought, his heart pounded harder and the spirit of fight burned from his head to his blood making his gut twist inside. Bjarke the Ox who could only move slow else he would feel sick, they used to say. ‘They’; people who were in his youth and now faceless warbles in his memory, save for one. He concentrated on her face and voice, the way she smiled and how she’d steal his armour to mock him by doing an impression so bad even he had to smile.
His lips angled ever so slightly at the edges as his nausea wore off. His mist of hearing was only made worse by the pounding of blood in his ears. The ground was firm enough to feel movements, enough to know that a crowd had now gathered to look upon the gore and deceased. Scurrying swift feet of settlers, heavy ignorant pounds from guards and other members of the Wolves faction. The air now thick with the taste of copper and elf guts had the settler’s in a panic, Bjarke felt the madness of accusations spread throughout the gathering crowd, he hoped Svarla would come now but on his knee he felt useless, invisible and as thought far too much time had passed. He had to pull himself together.
Another memory of the girl in his thoughts. He remembered the way she’d pull food from his hand and eat it whilst laughing at him. His eyes softened and for the first time in what felt like forever Bjarke the Salted breathed deep and smiled. It was enough to help him back to his feet. Something brushed his hand softly and then with teeth. Why were they looking at him and what were they saying? This accent they had made it hard to see the movements of their lips, his face sank back to the unimpressed glare as he concentrated to hear one word; “Wolf”. “No. Bjarke means bear.” Blades were drawn as they continued to shout and point. Something heavy leaned into his leg, something strong. Oxes aren’t that small he thought to himself. “Oh. Him.” He took off the large bound case that was lashed to his back and dropped it to the ground behind him, giving the ground a hard slam and sinking half a hand length into what should have been firm ground. The same wolf that followed him was now by his side nuzzling the hand that had the scent of food on it. The wolf nipped and growled. “You remind me of someone.” “Is that your wolf!?” Another faction member demanded to know, holding Bjarke’s arm on the other side of the wolf. "Are you fucking insane!?” “It’s a friend. Friends don’t own friends.” Bjarke looked at the wolf and rolled his eyes. “I can’t give you anything because that.” Pointing at a sack that lay where Gunnar once stood, with a blade sticking out of it. Gunnar came back into Bjarke’s line of sight with a pitcher of tar and sloshed it insultingly on the dead elf, tossing the bag with the blade onto the body. “BURN IT ALL RIGHT HERE! This filth doesn't deserve honour.” Several faction members came forward willingly with torches and set the body ablaze. There’s a funny thing about elves in that they burn much faster than a human body and their metals burn to a crisp if struck by an enchanted weapon. Gunnar had explained once before that Elven smithing is less to do with metallurgy and more with magic. What the fuck is wrong with good steel anyway thought Bjarke as Gunnar burned the blood off the war hammer in the fire. “Bjarke! I didn’t think you could think that fast, what was that your lunch? Ha! Svarla would have hated to cure me of poison. That’s a wolf isn’t it." "It’s a friend.” “You fed it didn’t you” “It ate some of my food.” “Did you fight it too?” “I trained with him.” “You’re a bastard. But for now I’ll get you that meat, your friend too.” “Thank you, friend” “I saw you smiling.” “No you didn’t” insisted the stubborn northman. Gunnar picked up Bjarke’s case as though it weighed nothing and set off walking. Bjarke now a few inches taller took up pace next to Gunnar who put a strong hand on his shoulder. “No. I didn’t.” He smirked. Bjarke was glad that the eye the tear chose to streak away from was the eye Gunnar couldn’t see.
I’m sitting on the floor literally right next to a chair because I put something in the chair and I don’t know where else to put it so I can sit in the chair
