Week 5 is in the books and we’re one week closer to the first ever college football playoff power rankings. When considering my top four list, there’s not much excitement; my top teams remained the same as last week. For the purpose of staying current, here is my list of the four best teams after the fifth week:

1) Alabama 2) Oklahoma 3) Oregon 4) Texas A&M

Only one of these teams actually played last week (Texas A&M), so I didn’t reward nor discredit any of my current leaders. Looking ahead, these teams are in for a test in Week 6.

Alabama has their first true road test Saturday when they go to Oxford, MS to take on Ole Miss. The 10th ranked Rebels come in with an undefeated record and one of the toughest defenses in the country. Blake Sims and the Tide offense will need to be nearly perfect this weekend; ‘Bama may have gotten away with committing 4 turnovers against the Gators, but that just won’t cut it against this 3rd ranked defense. This is your marquee match-up of the week and rightfully so. If the Tide can get the W, they'll stay in the driver seat for the playoff.

Our second of six Top 25 games this weekend is between #4 Oklahoma and #25 TCU in Fort Worth, TX. Though the Horned Frogs aren’t the toughest team on Oklahoma’s schedule this year, they’re not a group to take lightly. TCU has a stifling defense that ranks 2nd in the nation and average over 44 points per game. Granted, TCU has yet to face a team even close to the caliber of Boomer Sooner. A signature win for OU here and they may have a case for being on top.

Oregon has a potential trap game Thursday night against Arizona. The Wildcats -- a team that upset the Ducks last year in Tucson -- are 4-0 on the year, though they’ve had some narrow escapes. Nonetheless, they can still put points on the scoreboard, averaging 42 points per game. With Oregon allowing 21+ PPG, this could turn in to a shootout in Eugene. The Fightin’ Ducks will need to be careful Thursday night if they want to remain a top contender for the playoff.

Back-to-back tough games for the A&M Aggies as they head to Starkville, MS for another Top 25 match-up. The 12th ranked Bulldogs will arguably be the toughest opponent the Aggies have faced this year; 21st in points scored, 17th in points allowed. MSU is also coming off a huge win over LSU two weeks ago in Death Valley. Kenny Hill and company will need to be stellar on Saturday if they plan to leave Davis Wade Stadium unscathed. For now, A&M takes the 4th and final spot. A solid road win could catapult Kevin Sumlin’s Aggies even higher in the top four.
