Fue diseñado y construido por Rowland Mason Ordish en 1873 como una modificación de puente atirantado, que resultó ser estructuralmente errónea, por lo que entre 1884 y 1887 sir Joseph Bazalgette incorporó algunos de los elementos de diseño de un puente colgante. El Consejo del Gran Londres llevó a cabo un nuevo trabajo de reestructuración en 1973, mediante la adición de dos pilares de hormigón que transformaron el tramo central en un puente viga simple.
