It’s a winter wonderland underground with NEW Poetry in Motion posters popping up soon in subway cars across the city! Poem by Alberto Rios with artwork from Doug and Mike Starn’s “See it split, see it change” (2008) at South Ferry (1).
When Giving Is All We Have Alberto Ríos One river gives Its journey to the next. We give because someone gave to us. We give because nobody gave to us. We give because giving has changed us. We give because giving could have changed us. We have been better for it, We have been wounded by it— Giving has many faces: It is loud and quiet, Big, though small, diamond in wood-nails. Its story is old, the plot worn and the pages too, But we read this book, anyway, over and again: Giving is, first and every time, hand to hand, Mine to yours, yours to mine. You gave me blue and I gave you yellow. Together we are simple green. You gave me What you did not have, and I gave you What I had to give—together, we made Something greater from the difference. #circle #albertorios (em Brazil) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT7W8oPLeK1/?utm_medium=tumblr

“...Look back only for as long as you must, Then go forward into the history you will make. Be good, then better. Write books. Cure disease. Make us proud. Make yourself proud. And those who came before you? When you hear thunder, Hear it as their applause.” A House Called Tomorrow - Alberto Rios, Arizona Poet Laureate #asugrad #asufamily #asudad #asumom #AlbertoRios #poetlaureate (at Arizona State University) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxTFf1QgiaG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1hu2vflqm02l7

The library is dangerous—
Don’t Go Into the Library
Alberto Ríos, 1952
The library is dangerous— Don’t go in. If you do You know what will happen. It’s like a pet store or a bakery— Every single time you’ll come out of there Holding something in your arms. Those novels with their big eyes. And those no-nonsense, all muscle Greyhounds and Dobermans, All non-fiction and business, Cuddly when they’re young, But then the first page is turned. The doughnut scent of it all, knowledge, The aroma of coffee being made In all those books, something for everyone, The deli offerings of civilization itself. The library is the book of books, Its concrete and wood and glass covers Keeping within them the very big, Very long story of everything. The library is dangerous, full Of answers. If you go inside, You may not come out The same person who went in.
I Saw You Tomorrow
You’re on an airplane
In a car. You’re in a car
On the bus. You’re on the bus Going home as you daydream
At your desk. On your desk You have a postcard of Alaska.
You are never where you are, And when you are, you’re leaving,
Late already for something else, A meeting, a class, shopping,
And isn’t shopping fun, you think, Like being on a sightseeing tour.
But you’re late and must get home, Or you’re home and must get going,
Late either way, exasperated, Tapping your foot to get us all
Out the door. Goodbye, you wave To yourself, standing there.
