Morris Abrahams receives the endorsement of Mayor Harrison and his political allies for the city council seat left vacant by his brother who died in July. Morris was recently indicted for vote fraud and this summer punched a politician in city hall. His brother, Manny, also faced various charges of corruption.

Chicago--July 1, 1913

Alderman Emanuel “Manny” Abrahams dies during a City Council meeting only minutes after successfully arguing against a noise ordinance that would stop Maxwell Street peddlers from crying their wares.

The Tribune calls it “the speech of his life” and describes the scene this way: “The boss of the ghetto sat back in his chair. A faint smile on his face gradually gave way to an expression of pain. Within two minutes after the roll call he fell writhing to the floor. He died at University Hospital at 6:30, two hours after he collapsed.”

Manny had been previously accused of benefiting over corruption at the market. His brother punched a man outside City Council during an investigation into the corruption.

The Tribune's society column reports -- following hundreds of words on the weddings and Europeans vacations of Chicago's high society -- that Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Pawnee Bill's Far East show is moving from the south to north side of the city. For the next two days, the show will be held at Southport and Diversey. The show will move to Chicago and Western for Fourth of July weekend.

Chicago -- June 9, 1913

Morris Abraham, brother of Alderman Manny Abraham, punches Republican Precinct Committee member Samuel Goldman outside the City Council meeting. A witness says Morris accused Goldman of "squawking to the Tribune." Goldman and Manny Abraham have been political allies for 18 years but recent rumors that Manny will terminate Goldman's appointment at the Municipal Court and that Goldman is threatening to squeal have soured their relationship. Manny is at the City Council chambers addressing claims that Maxwell Street managers are taking bribes and demanding favors for the Alderman. A score of peddlers testify to bribes collected by A.I. Goldstein and his "sluggers." During the proceedings, an attorney objects to "an unnamed man, a dark, heavyset fellow, with a big scar outlining his cheekbone" standing in the back of the room intimidating witnesses.  The man says nothing but steps back "with a scowl" after being ordered by the Council. Also in the news The police catch the "lunchroom robber". No further information is given. Patrolman Thomas Murphy of 8822 S Halsted wakes up st midnight, walks to his yard in his nightgown, and shoots himself in the head. Governor Edward Fitzsimmmons Dunne signs s $12,000 appropriations bill for a joint legislative committee to investigate voting machine irregularities in Chicago.
