Israel's Library- Snatching History from the Jaws of Destruction
An Ancient Hebrew Bible will be digitized so that all may see it
Israel has managed over time to snatch treasures of history from the jaws of destruction. Spies, intrigue, tales of deliverance – the Israeli Library spans centuries. They have accumulated books, maps, and manuscripts from nearly everywhere Jews lived over great expanses of time.
Israel is “dusting off” the covers of some of these manuscripts to reveal them to the public. They are seeking manuscripts from all over the world, and plan to digitize the valuable treasures so that the entire world will be able to view them.
One prized Israeli possession is the Aleppo Codex- an ancient and accurate Hebrew Bible. Aleppo, Syria was home to the codex for 600 years. The manuscript is missing approximately 200 pages, something the Israeli museum officials prefer not to comment on, given where the original was kept for so long.
According to the New York Times,
“…it was believed to possess magical properties. It was said that women who looked upon it would become pregnant, that those who held the keys to its safe were blessed, that anyone who stole or sold the codex was cursed and that a terrible plague would wipe out the Jewish community if it were removed from their synagogue. At the tops of some of the pages, the Aleppo elders inscribed a warning to would-be thieves: “Sacred to Yahweh, not to be sold or defiled.” And elsewhere: “Cursed be he who steals it, and cursed be he who sells it.” Among some parties, those fears persist even today…
The Syrian government took an interest in the codex after an American antiquities merchant offered $20 million for it, and so the leaders of the Aleppo synagogue went to great lengths to persuade Syrian intelligence that the book had been burned. For 10 years, even after word got out that the codex had not been destroyed, they kept it hidden in secret locations and refused to contemplate moving it from Aleppo.”
The manuscript was smuggled to Israel in 1957, a tale which reads like a detective novel. Although the Mossad worked diligently to find the missing pages, their disappearance remains a mystery. The story of the codex may be found here.
“Crowns of Damascus”- saved from destruction
These ancient Bible manuscripts, written in the Middle East and Europe between 700 to 1,000 years ago, were smuggled out of Syria in the 1990’s in a Mossad spy operation so classified that no one even knew of their existence.
The collections, which included a 13th Century Spanish Bible, were brought to Israel after Hafez Assad ‘lifted travel regulations for Jews in Syria‘ (although according to the New York Times article, the Mossad, the CIA, and the US State Department were involved in helping the people leave). Only about a dozen staffers knew of the existence of the manuscripts, which were given to the library by Mossad on condition that no one be told.
The Syrian synagogue where the manuscripts had rested for centuries was destroyed in the “civil war” in 2013. Sometimes, by Divine design, things are preserved for posterity so that other generations may learn from them.
