Alert312 - Upside Eternal
You know when you see really good musicians of any genre perform, it doesn’t matter whether you would normally like that genre or not normally, all of a sudden you find it attractive… surely it’s not just me that thinks that? It’s like you’re attracted to the talent as much as the music. That’s how I feel about ALERT312.
I have loved hip hop since the early 1990s, and whilst I enjoy all the new school guys coming through with their crazy synths etc, there’s something that appeals to me at a deeper level when you see analog audiophiles at work. Few people make me as excited as ALERT312, you never know what they will do to create their sound. They love creating art, they love live music, they love all the things that make music tangible. Their love of music is matched by their love of their location. Chicago natives, they added “312” into their name in late 2012 as an homage to their native area of Chicago. This on top of the fantastic work they do running the Streetlights Bible Project, which was started as a response to a local need in their own community and has now gone worldwide!
The album Upside Eternal is bookended by the Local and Eternal. The Opening track speaks about what they see locally and their love for their city of Chicago, and how it makes their hearts break… something they’ve made no secret of since All I See Is Red. The first lyrics you hear on the album are:
Chicago I’m in love with you
You cut my arm I bleed your blue
But you cut me just too many times
And I bled your lament with a thousand rhymes
The closer is Eternal…
Eternity’s forever true
Written on our heart it’s clue
pointing us to another time
When all is new by God’s design
A moving track about our future hope - The Upside Eternal! A beautiful blend of song, spoken word, live instrumentation giving the feel of an overture spanning the progress of the album.
Rich textures of instrumentation are littered throughout the album. There’s a wealth of details lyrically and musically which make the album an absolute delight to listen to. Movement and rhythm in tracks like Haunt Me Home and Dwell All Day will get your heads nodding and whilst tracks like Flood Ash will get the tears falling. I love the variety and breadth of the album, it's brilliant, #MusicWeLove for sure!
It’ll need more than one listen for you to start deciding which tracks will become favourites - it’s the opposite of disposable pop music (in a good way)! But speaking of favourites it’s about time I told you which ones have stamped themselves hardest into my mind after listening to the album for a couple of weeks:
Cloud City
Upside Eternal
Dwell
Like the sound of this?
If you’re new to ALERT312 do yourself a favour and listen to their back catalogue! Much is spoken about or typed online about so-called “slept-on” acts or artists… folks who slip through the net of notoriety for one reason or another despite being top quality. For me ALERT312 would be that, There’s lots of hype about the ‘next big rapper’ who is often just another guy rapping over a beat produced by a guy he’s never met in real life. What you have to admire about ALERT312 is their dedication to great quality music production to support to lyrics.
I can’t finish without giving the Streetlights Bible Project a proper plug. If you’ve not checked it out before, get on their website and sample what they’re doing - it’s genius! As The Move, we’ve supported them financially to help produce a couple of the projects they’ve put out because we believe in what they do so much. They’re helping to make the Bible memorable for folks who don’t have the reading skills to get stuck into the Word themselves. How much do you love the fact they are moved to take on the issue Biblical illiteracy and actually do something about it?

Kingdoms Falling is the second single from ALERT312’s upcoming full length, The Upside Eternal. Armed with drums from Daniel Steele and a feature verse from fellow Midwest MC Taelor Gray, Kingdoms Falling is a brash editorial of man’s hunt and hunger for power and fame – it’s sure to challenge the mind and break the neck.Kingdoms Falling is a brash editorial of man’s hunt and hunger for power…

“The Upside Eternal”, the lead single and title of ALERT312’s sophomore full length is a requiem for wrestling with the present realities of life with a hopeful anticipation for the future. Boogalu laments, “I never wanted this to be all that there is for me… like an ache for a lover, like a longing for eternity.” The video’s stark emptiness on the verses and lush fauna greenery in the chorus…

Alert 312- Eye Dream (Tragic Hero Lyrics) My 20/20 ain’t a hundred if I wanted at least I got air if there ain’t nothing in my stomach and if I’m getting punished got tears, use sponges on the mirror just to smear my reflection right from it when I dream, I meet God like I’m going sightseeing His word strikes the earth, it’s like lightening …hygiene for the mind, pull the IV five feet high underground as I deep talk when I sleepwalk All I see is shadows of my past When the Son cast but it’s looking like a wanted ad Wise words that are written up in typos in a room full of thoughts as my eyes close I can never blend in a never ending story of a little engine Vanilla flavored skies looking for redemption with every word I intake performing miracles on my REM stage.. like whaaat!
