(Having discerned who you are, dear “stranger”, I feel that I should write this one out of order, as you recently celebrated a birthday!)----- “How very curious.” Tom Brightwind folded his arms across his chest, looking at the other – not fairy, not human either, caught somewhere in the middle and suspended now in a terrible place of not-belonging. Changeling. The word sat in his tongue, and in some more he would be, he supposed. His smile turned into a grin then, sinister and sharp. “Oh yes, quite curious. Tell me again your father’s name?”Alessandro met his stare, matched it with his own stubbornness and refused to flinch. “I do not believe I have told you his name yet, and I doubt very much I should be obligated to divulge such a thing to a stranger that appears on my doorstep unannounced–”“Your doorstep?” Tom laughed, tapped a long finger against his chin thoughtfully. “Hmm, that does not sound right at all. Not at all. Last I had heard, the master of this house was, well, rather indisposed.”“Dead. The word you are looking for is dead.” “I suppose that is indeed what I meant.”Neither of them blinked, neither moved, neither of them dared to breathe. “Fairwood.” Alessandro said finally. “My father’s name is – was – Fairwood.” Tom’s eyes widened in delight and surprize. “How very curious indeed.” Alessandro had at first wanted to be rid of this fairy – for he knew the stranger was, indeed, one of those. Like me, he pushed that thought away quickly. Now, his interest was caught, perhaps ensnared by some fairy magic, but caught all the same. It might very well be some trick, some ploy, perhaps even a convoluted attempt at revenge, assuming that fairies undertook such things. But there was that selfish voice, ever at the back of his mind that spoke of his father’s estates and told him that he deserved, at the very least, to know. He blinked.

The one, the only, Mr. Alessandro Simonelli
This house is disordered and dirty. Its inhabitants have idled away their days in pointless pleasures and in celebrations of past cruelties--things that ought not to be remembered. All these faults, I shall in time set right.*
*A surprizing number of kings and princes of Faerie have been human. John Uskglass, Stephen Black and Alessandro Simonelli are just three. Fairies are, by and large, irredeemably indolent. Though they are fond of high rank, honours and riches, they detest the hard work of government.
