Orange peel fungus in what passes for snow in these parts!

This fungus is an expert coloniser of exposed clays - I mostly find it on 1-2 year old dirt tracks or road verges after roadworks.

I have seen it once or twice on scars of a land-slips and recently eroded river banks, which are probably its natural habitat.

Old photo I had ready but forgot to post - I love these things! They’re a remarkable bright orange and always have me running over to them, more often than not to find that it’s actual orange peel someone’s left after a picnic than the fungus itself, but still.

The orange peel fungus (Aleuria aurantia) is a widespread ascomycete fungus in the order Pezizales. The brilliant orange, cup-shaped ascocarps often resemble orange peels strewn on the ground, giving this species its common name. Learn more about mushrooms on my blog!! Some of the wonderful edible mushrooms I picked recently in the Seattle area! From top to bottom, these are the Pacific Golden Chanterelle (Cantharellus formosus), Western Cauliflower Mushroom (Sparassis radicata), Orange Peel Fungus (Aleuria aurantia), and Phoenix/Lung Oyster (Pleurotus pulmonarius).
