SMOLYAR WEAVES HIS WAY TO VICTORY

Alex Smolyar spent his morning defending from the Trident of David Beckmann to take his maiden victory in the F3 Sprint Race.

Championship leader Oscar Piastri failed to finish for the first time this season, but none of his PREMA team mates or Liam Lawson could finish on the podium to really close the Championship gap on the Australian.

Action on the formation lap saw Sebastian Fernandez suddenly slow, however he was able to get going again. It looked like he’d just about recovered back to his grid slot, he was able to line up P4 but wasn’t back in position before the first Safety Car line, so he got a ridiculous 10 second stop/go penalty.

Lap one saw everyone get away well, as the top four remained line astern through the lap. Further behind Frederico Malvestiti ran wide onto the grass on the exit of Aintree, dropping him back, whilst Jake Hughes fought past Logan Sargeant.

Richard Verschoor then also got past the PREMA of Logan Sargeant, who then dipped his wheels onto the grass. Behind him his team mate, Piastri went bouncing across the same gravel trap on the exit of Luffield, dropping him all the way down to P16.

The drama continued further behind with Jack Doohan’s poor run of luck continuing. Alessio Deledda managing to drive into the back of him on the Wellington Straight, giving him a rear left puncture and Deledda had to pit for a new front wing - sending both of them to the back of the pack.

The Safety Car came out on lap five, as Igor Fraga’s Charouz became stranded on the side of the road on the Wellington Straight just before Brooklands. With the car stuck and unable to be pushed by the marshals, a tractor was needed to remove it before racing resumed on lap nine.

The field remained tightly packed on the restart but leaders still remained in the same order until lap 11, when Sargeant got back past Richard Verschoor, starting his recovery through the points having lost out earlier in the race.

Further behind, Championship leader Piastri’s miserable morning ended in the pit lane. He dropped down the order after his DRS became stuck open, with his mechanics unable to fix it, he climbed out of the car and left his rivals with a huge opportunity to close in on him at the top of the standings.

A lap later and Jake Hughes’ decent drive was ruined as he ran wide at The Loop and Aintree, dropping him down to P10 as he scampered over the grass and run off, he was unable to climb back through the pack from there.

Frederik Vesti had to hold off Lawson for several laps in the battle for P5, Lawson going especially close into Stowe on lap 13, but Vesti used the additional grip on the outside of the corner to keep it planted and maintain position.

Towards the back of the field, Sophia Floersch managed to force Cameron Das off the road and bouncing into the gravel at Luffield, obviously leaving a car’s width wasn’t applicable there.

The final laps were dominated by Smolyar weaving to breaks the toe of Beckmann who repeatedly closed up to the back, but couldn’t find a way past the ART. As Alex Peroni failed to close in on the battle for the podium in P4, Sargeant also stole P6 from Lawson and set the fastest lap of the race for two bonus points on the final lap.

Unlike yesterday, both Theo Pourchaire and Richard Verschoor were able to make their way back up into the points to salvage something from their weekend. Whilst the Jenzers of Calan Williams and Malvestiti put in decent drives to fall just short of a points finish.

Clement Novalak was able to take a podium in his “home” race (a French driver racing under a British license), Jake Hughes took P10, Ben Barnicoat a very respectable P12. Max Fewtrell was unable to recover from a grid penalty after yesterday’s incident finishing P20 and Olli Caldwell down in P26.
