I just learned that the astronauts on the ISS do not wash their clothes, they put their used clothes in a capsule, which oftentimes burn up when they enter the atmosphere.

So when you see a shooting star it could be the dirty clothes of some astronaut.

Because of the circumstances of Sigmund Jähns death, I wanted to remind some people (and probably also myself) something that is very close to my heart :

To me spaceflight and space travel isn't about nations or patriotism. I don't really see several countries representing themself in space, I see humans who are representing humankind, representing a world with so many many cultures and ethical groups. There are no borders in space, no man made red lines on maps, nothing that could divide human beings. Space travel and especially the ISS is a group project of a lot of countries who worked towards one particular aim: To get information about the world we live in ; to seek where we come from and where we should go to in the near future.

Sigmund Jähn is the best example. Originally from East Germany, he didn't only represented the DDR, he represented a country that was diveded and struggled to find back together. During these times he gave people new hope into humanity, into something that seemed unreachable : Forgiveness and working together with each other, not against each other.

I personally experienced Sigmund Jähn (in interviews and articles) as a wise man, who always found the right words and knew how to explain. I'm truly sad to hear that he passed away and that another explorer from the older generation is lost for us. Still, he inspired many young people and will forever have an impact on history. Ad astra per aspera 🌠

German astronaut Alexander Gerst snapped these images of Super Typhoon Trami from the International Space Station. The storm is tracking slowly and is expected to follow a path between Ishigaki and Okinawa in southern Japan.
